How often do you see the GP?

Just a general question - how often on average do you go?
I find myself going once or twice in a month and now conscious that I go too much!

Right now? Every 2 weeks.
But that's only because I'm prescribed an extremely strong painkiller and my new surgery is over-zealous regarding addiction.

I do have an chronic pain condition and autoimmune disorder that mean I can sometimes need to see a GP lots - other times I can go weeks/months.
It all depends.

Waiting for the 'I don't go to the GP ever unless my head falls off - even then I'll see the pharmacist first' posters though Grin

GiggleMcDimples · 17/06/2019 19:49

I went once after my operation in September because I got at infection in my incision and needed antibiotics and a sick note.
Then once last week for medication and I have a smear booked next week.
I've seen my consultant twice this year for a post op follow up and to talk about the hysterectomy I'll be having soon. Other than that, I don't see my GP. The past couple of years have been shit though so I've had more appointments with different people to try and sort my condition out. (Severe endometriosis and adenomyosis)
Won't be long for my hysterectomy now though and I can't bloody wait! (Pun not intended).

Peterpiperpickedwrong · 17/06/2019 19:54

They request I go annually for a medication review ( I have a couple of chronic health conditions I take daily meds for so I have to go for that) other than that I have been once in the last 12 months.

m0therofdragons · 17/06/2019 20:09

For me once or twice a year. For dc add another couple of times a year (3 dc).

Beautiful3 · 17/06/2019 20:21

I've seen a Doctor, 3 times in ten years. My children have been 5/4 times each, they are 9 & 6.

Sunshineonleith12 · 17/06/2019 20:23

Once in 10 years (apart from pregnancies)

Starlight2004 · 17/06/2019 20:28

Maybe once a year to 18 months, I suffer with migraines and need medication reviews at least yearly but try to avoid as I hate going to the GP even though I do have a very lovely one.

Holymolymackerel · 17/06/2019 20:31

Blobby10
May I ask about your experience with orbital cellulitis please.

My dd, who was 6 at the time, got it last year and had to have an operation and drain in the side of her nose because the infection was so widespread, antibiotics were deemed not enough, the infection moved the position of her eye but they saved it. She had iv antibiotics for 1 week in hospital, then orals for weeks.

I am scared it will happen again and I read you have had it repeatedly, what has you experienced been if I may ask.

ReginaGeorgeous · 17/06/2019 20:33

Aside from my pregnancies, I see my GP once every six months to get another prescription of the pill. My GP will not prescribe for longer than six months at a time without checking my blood pressure due to family history of strokes. Touch wood I rarely get ill, I think I've had two courses of antibiotics in the last five years.

DramaAlpaca · 17/06/2019 20:35

Once a year, twice at the most. It's €50 a visit in my part of Ireland, so that tends to make you think very carefully about whether it's really necessary to go. I miss the NHS.

irregularegular · 17/06/2019 20:38

Never. I think literally the only times I've ever been to the GP are pregnancy or conception related. I'm just never ill to notice. Never been ill enough to not work, go out, or do whatever I was planning to do. I'm nearly 50.

irregularegular · 17/06/2019 20:39

meant contraception not conception. and smear tests.

Stompythedinosaur · 17/06/2019 20:49

Very irregularly, last time was 9 years ago. I generally don't see the point in going unless there is something I need the GP to refer me for or prescribe for me.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 17/06/2019 21:10

I seem to go through spates of these things - nothing or nearly nothing for months or years, but I've been for 5 GP appointments and two blood tests in the last 4 months, plus two hospital appointments, one inpatient operation and one physio session.

None of it was the sniffles - three for a recurrence of a health condition, and two to start the ball rolling on a referral to a specialist for a condition I likely have.

Fairly unusual for me though - I'd only been once or twice in the last 18 months.

Ginandsonic · 17/06/2019 21:19

Once every two months to satisfy them that I'm not currently actively suicidal and get my prescription for antidepressants renewed.

Rememberallball · 17/06/2019 21:21

Moved here almost 8 months ago so registered with a new GP surgery. Since then have had a new patient check up with HCA; 1x phone consultation to arrange 2 blood tests; 2x appointments for said blood tests; saw GP last week as am 24 weeks pregnant and was unwell - this led to a 3rd blood test appointment.

In addition to being pregnant I have 2 long term health conditions and, at some point, will have to see one of the GP’s about those including (where appropriate) being referred to a specialist.

At my old surgery, I only went if I was ill or needed to be seen for medication reviews/in connection to infertility, and that probably accounted for 6-8 appointments a year.

Camomila · 17/06/2019 21:49

Once every a year two usually (breast lump and allergies were the last 2 appointments I remember)

Unless I'm pregnant then I end up going lots as I'm a bit feeble when pregnant (though to be fair I've been 'high risk' both times so they make some of the appointments for me)

CookPassBabtridge · 17/06/2019 21:52

2013 for some psoriasis cream and can't remember before that.. If I get ill from the kids I just ride it out.

RaininSummer · 17/06/2019 22:04

Other than pregnancy, smears, mammograms and coils, only been near medics of any kind about 3 times in over ten years. Actual doctor one visit and one phone call They are my last resort normally if I can't fix myself.

LittleGinBigGin · 17/06/2019 22:28

Nearly every week, twice last week alone Sad I am quite a poorly person at the moment. I had 14 prescriptions to pick up this week.

Before I got sick, probably once every six-nine months.

I do try to call and speak to the doctor rather than a visit.

cravingmilkshake · 17/06/2019 22:30

I've been to get the pill at 18 and again at 29 to say I am pregnant after my wedding! I'm sure I'll be there a lot more with a baby.

TonTonMacoute · 17/06/2019 22:33

Can't remember the last time I saw a GP, must be over seven years, and even then it was only because my annual medication review was still done by the doctor.

MotherofaCat · 17/06/2019 22:40

About once a year for an asthma review. I also went about 2 years ago for an ear infection that needed antibiotics. Twice a month seems excessive OP unless you have a severe medical issue. GPs are busy and there are plenty of ways you can self care for minor ailments

MrsCollinssettled · 17/06/2019 22:47

Mid 50s. I rarely go other than for smears, and at my recent smear the nurse remarked that they didn't often see me. If I'm ill it's normally a virus and I'm not about to waste my time (or an appointment that someone else could use) hauling myself up to the surgery, feeling crap, just for the gp to tell me it's a virus and they can't do anything about it.

managedmis · 17/06/2019 22:48

I've seen the gp for me once in the past year. Twice for the kids, I think
