Why is the weather so crap this summer?

It hasn't stopped raining here for 24 hours! And looking at the forecast it's more of the same into tommorrow. How can it possibly rain for so long without stopping? This follows weeks of it alternating almost hourly between rain and sunshine and then back again. It's all so depressing and dark. I'm really missing the light and the feel of sun of sun on my skin.

I'm amazed that the media haven't picked up on how awful it's been yet? There must be a reason for it?

Personally I’m very glad to see some rain. It’s been very dry here in Sussex and my gardens were getting a bit desperate.

DappledThings · 11/06/2019 20:09

Normal for June. How often have you seen a sodden Glastonbury? More often than a sunny one I reckon!

Kaykay06 · 11/06/2019 20:15

Been dry here (Stirling) mostly which is nice but rain forcast for next few days but it’s only June, still time for some warm weather.

And if I want hot weather I’d go abroad, where there is a pool/the sea etc

EnidButton · 11/06/2019 20:55

Because I prayed to the rain gods really really hard last Summer. Wink

Mustbetimeforachange · 11/06/2019 21:00

Remember the queen doing flotilla face for the jubilee. That was June & it was freezing. Not unusual but I wish it would bloody stop. We've got the heating on.

Shinyshoes2 · 11/06/2019 21:00

The weather doesn't really pick up nicely until Wimbledon does it ? ..... although Wimbledon is going to be late this year .. July !! ..but judging by previous years when Wimbledon was in late June it was ok , but only just

Sparklingfairylights · 11/06/2019 21:43

Thank God it's pouring is all I can say, we kind of need water and the reservoirs and rivers etc getting low. Farmers, gardens and animals need water. I'm ready for it to stop by the end of the week though Smile

Peachsummer · 11/06/2019 21:45

My FB memories show it was glorious weather at the end of May and the end of June last year, but crap rainy weather at the beginning of June. So I think you’re being fooled by your own memories of what last year was like.

Lockheart · 11/06/2019 21:45

We need rain. To be honest we need more of it than we've had for a good while, although preferably not all at once like the last couple of days.

It can't all be wall to wall sunshine; last year was extremely difficult for farmers and our wildlife.

Everything in balance.

DinosApple · 11/06/2019 22:09

We need the rain, and it is usual, but I'm so fed up of wearing so many layers to work (draughty open fronted workshop).

Probably my fault though, I was saying to someone last week we have always had good weather for our school summer fayre...

missyB1 · 11/06/2019 22:12

Just laid out my work clothes for tomorrow. Vest, jumper, cardigan, sigh I wish I was wearing T shirts.

DeptfordDervish · 11/06/2019 22:30

Thank you @EnidButton. Last summer was godawful.

YorkieTheRabbit · 11/06/2019 22:42

It’s been 9 degrees here today, 9! It’s rained pretty much nonstop since yesterday lunchtime and looks likely to continue until Friday lunchtime at least. I don’t t expect wall to wall sunshine but double figures would be nice.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 11/06/2019 22:48

I like it and the dogs are happier than in the heat. Last summer was murder, on them
and on the gardens.

Al203 · 11/06/2019 22:50

Our summer weather depends on where the jet stream sits above the UK. That in turn is increasingly affected by ocean temperature events in the south-east Pacific Ocean.

shiveringtimber · 11/06/2019 23:07

Apart from the undeniable effects of global warming, it's still relatively normal to have lots of rain. It just seems endless when we've been impatiently waiting for summer. But sunny warm days will come! Have a Wineor a Brewmeanwhile.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 11/06/2019 23:09

It’s not summer yet. Not until the 21st of June.
The weather in June is always crap but everyone forgets.

Terramirabilis · 11/06/2019 23:14

36 degrees and sunny here, OP. OHHH! You meant in the UK. Sorry Wink

TwoShades1 · 12/06/2019 01:41

Just to rub things in, it’s winter in Australia and currently 17 degrees (and I live down the south where it does get colder). It is raining a lot today though.

bumblingbovine49 · 12/06/2019 02:01

I LOVED last summer and I hate this weather It makes me really depressed, lethargic and tired and also achy because of the damp.

BUT it is not unusual for the UK. I think it was in 2012 ( not sure as I am terrible with years) when we barely saw the sun all summer. Lots of rain, almost no sunny days, just lots of cloud and gloom. I remember feeling almost suicidal as the nights drew at the beginning of September and realising that there had not been one evening where I had been in the garden over the summer as it had felt too dark and gloomy after work.

It just felt so relentless to have no proper light all summer and to go straight from that into the darkness of autumn and winter. I really hope it is not like that for the rest of this summer.

notangelinajolie · 12/06/2019 02:04

Not just here. The Med has had dreadful weather. We were in Italy a couple of weeks back and they can't remember weather so bad. Spain and France have been just as bad.

managedmis · 12/06/2019 02:14

Standard issue, all that rain.

SkintAsASkintThing · 12/06/2019 02:15

A really wet summer always follows a very hot one.

I'm loving it tbh 😂😂😂

Jonette · 12/06/2019 02:21

I'm bloody freezing. Hate this weather. My feet are permanently like icebergs. I'm sitting here in the middle of june with tracksuit, t-shirt, fleece and mahoosive dressing gown on and still cold! I hate the cold and wet.

Jonette · 12/06/2019 02:23

My weather app tells me it's shit again tomorrow with a high of 16 fucking degrees.
