Why is the weather so crap this summer?

It hasn't stopped raining here for 24 hours! And looking at the forecast it's more of the same into tommorrow. How can it possibly rain for so long without stopping? This follows weeks of it alternating almost hourly between rain and sunshine and then back again. It's all so depressing and dark. I'm really missing the light and the feel of sun of sun on my skin.

I'm amazed that the media haven't picked up on how awful it's been yet? There must be a reason for it?

This is pretty normal weather: May is usually hot and dry, June rainy, properly hot in July. hot but stormy in August. Last year was unusual!

Metcheck do a good rundown of expected weather through the year

GlossyTaco · 12/06/2019 05:25

Agree with pps. This is pretty standard.

My birthday is this month and iirrc it rains on my birthday 90% of the time.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 12/06/2019 05:28

I actually feel like crying. I think I get summer SAD. I love the sun so much and can handle its absence in the winter. But I am always crushingly disappointed in the summer.

I loved last summer so much.

I think other countries should offer British people asylum in the summer.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 12/06/2019 05:31

And the reservoirs are NOT low here in Yorkshire. They are higher than they were in winter.

Decormad38 · 12/06/2019 05:32

Because we live in a temperate zone and last year’s weather happens about once every 10 years!

BooseysMom · 12/06/2019 06:21

Another day of cold and rain here in the Midlands. Actually had a hot water bottle last night and sneakily put the heating on when DH wasn't looking! Agree the gardens need it but it will get so wet it turns into a bog then we'll have drought later in the summer and it will turn into concrete and form cracks!
I remember having to cancel a father's day trip last year as my 80 yo dad couldn't stand the heat. Very different story this year unless by Sunday it suddenly becomes scorchio Smile

LarryGreysonsDoor · 12/06/2019 07:06

Last year was dreadful. We had so many fires here.
I remember when it finally started raining after a month the kids in our road all came running out and danced up and down the street.

Sparklingfairylights · 12/06/2019 07:43

Yes remember the fires up on the moors last year? To say it's been dreadful in Italy etc, they were desperate for water last year so sure they will be very grateful too. I'm a hot summer lover too but very aware how critical good water is.

Barnabyboy · 12/06/2019 07:48

Surely it’s normal For this time of year. Last year was the freak weather plus it isn’t officially summer yet

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 12/06/2019 07:52

I'm in Lancashire, it's standard.

Giraffeinabox · 12/06/2019 07:57

Where we live, in july 2007 it rained so much the whole county was flooded. It was my last day of primary school and was followed by a hot 6 weeks holidays where our water was switched off for 10days and we were using bowsers, bottled water drop off stations and i remember driving 30 miles to the nearest swimming pool who had water for showers. This is nothing! Google '2007 floods' and you shall see!!

IrenetheQuaint · 12/06/2019 08:01

Yes I remember the 2007 floods!!

It's the jet stream, isn't it - it has taken up position above us and is picking up water from the Atlantic and dropping it on our heads :(

Cerealkillers · 12/06/2019 08:03

I'm loving it! Last year was horrendous as I work somewhere that has machinery blasting heat out all day.

ScreamingValenta · 12/06/2019 08:04

Think back to 2012 - remember the pageant for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on the Thames in early June? It absolutely hammered it down! I remember a sodden and dripping choir bravely singing 'Land of Hope and Glory' on one of the barges - very 'British' it all was.

burritofan · 12/06/2019 08:16

It is summer! Summer is June, July, August. Autumn is Sept, Oct, Nov. Winter is Dec, Jan, Feb. Spring is March, April, May. Those are the rules.

Anyway it always rains in June except sometimes it doesn't. It does feel extra gloomy this year, though.

Punxsutawney · 12/06/2019 08:27

It's Ds's birthday today and one of his presents is a little desk air cooling unit. On a hot summers day his bedroom gets so warm. Last year his room was unbearably hot at times for him. He woke up this morning moaning that he was cold. Not sure he will need to use his present for a while but it will be there ready for when any hot weather arrives!

Emmabryant123 · 12/06/2019 08:29

Apparently it isn't summer yet

Why is the weather so crap this summer?
SherlockHolmesPipe · 12/06/2019 08:30

A few days rain....and everyone moans, where's the summer etc etc. My garden and allotment need rain.🌺🌼🌷🌸🐝🐛🐝😝

SherlockHolmesPipe · 12/06/2019 08:32

There is a difference between meteorological summer (1st June) and astrological summer.

SunsetBunny · 12/06/2019 08:37

I just typed a fairly long reply & it randomly disappeared!! Grrr

It’s another kinky jet stream, same thing happened last year but it was stuck in a different place.
Weather has been poor across Europe and they’ve had snow in Australia. Might also be something to do with the solar minimum?

Looks like things may improve from next week! Prefer for the good weather to come nearer school hols anyway!

ErrolTheDragon · 12/06/2019 08:40

One summer when I was a child we had some snow in June. This was the Essex coast, not the highlands of Scotland.

British weather has always been unpredictable, climate change will exacerbate that.

This. Of course mid June is summer.

This does seems like a particularly bad one, as most year's we get a nice spell in May (or even April) and we haven't had that. Also while rain in June is hardly unusual, it's not normally so persistent. We can't even get one nice day lately, even if the sun comes outs for a few hours the rain is not far behind.

I remember 2006 was an amazing summer (not that I was here to enjoy it but I got all the updates from home), while 2007 was a washout. It rained every single day for four months from May to Sept. Most depressing summer I ever experienced.

MedalMedalMedal · 12/06/2019 09:00

It’ll be something or other to do with the jet stream. It’s always gets the blame..

I wish it’d position itself wherever it was last year.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/06/2019 09:07

It’s not really summer yet though.

Astrological summer begins 21/06/19.

ControversialFerret · 12/06/2019 09:11

Last year was so dry - we need the rain.

That metcheck link a PP put up is really interesting. I've always thought that May tends to be nice and June tends to be crap. According to the analysis that's usually correct - and it's all to do with the jet stream and its position.

Looking at the forecast it's due to start drying up again next week and temperatures will rise.

I love the blue skies and sunny days but am trying to look on the bright side of all this rain, in that it saves me having to water the garden and my water butts are all full of lovely rainwater.
