Why is the weather so crap this summer?

It hasn't stopped raining here for 24 hours! And looking at the forecast it's more of the same into tommorrow. How can it possibly rain for so long without stopping? This follows weeks of it alternating almost hourly between rain and sunshine and then back again. It's all so depressing and dark. I'm really missing the light and the feel of sun of sun on my skin.

I'm amazed that the media haven't picked up on how awful it's been yet? There must be a reason for it?

I don't think summer begins on June 21st, Summer Solstice.
My search found
"When does summer start? - Met Office
By the meteorological calendar, spring starts on 1 March. The seasons are defined as spring (March, April, May), summer (June, July, August), autumn (September, October, November) and winter (December, January, February).

Our climate is so changeable that we can't depend on having a proper summer at all.
Saying that, its like winter here in Wales and I hate it. I am cold and miserable, it's too wet to garden or go to the park.
Here's hoping for a good few moths of sunshine to come

SherlockHolmesPipe · 12/06/2019 09:16

Meteorological summer is 1st June.

Sakura7 · 12/06/2019 09:20

Meteorological seasons are far more commonly used though.

Sakura7 · 12/06/2019 09:22

^ That was in response to Chardonnay

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/06/2019 09:24

I suppose, I feel better in my woolly socks and raincoat thinking it’s not Summer yet.

Sparklingfairylights · 12/06/2019 09:47

This does seems like a particularly bad one, as most year's we get a nice spell in May (or even April) and we haven't had that. Er Easter was wonderful this year!

Sakura7 · 12/06/2019 09:52

Er Easter was wonderful this year!

Wasn't all that amazing where I am. We had a couple of nice days and a couple of average days over that weekend, as far as I remember.

Generally by now we'd have had at least one good spell of several dry sunny days in a row.

Sparklingfairylights · 12/06/2019 09:59

I never expect it to be hot and sunny much before 21st June, last year was exceptional.

Frownette · 12/06/2019 10:03

It's just so cold

0ccamsRazor · 12/06/2019 10:08

Global wierding and el nino year are major contributing factors to our climate this year.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 12/06/2019 10:11

Even this time last year the weather was still pretty awful. I remember very clearly that the heatwave started when DS was born and his birthday isn’t for another week!

Mustbetimeforachange · 12/06/2019 10:56

I've just had a look at the historical temperatures from last year. At Heathrow it was 60/61 the equivalent of this week & then temperatures started taking off from June 18th. I remember it broke briefly in about the third week of July & then mud August.

wanderings · 12/06/2019 11:34

I know what you mean - I've only done one outdoor swim on Hampstead Heath so far this year. Last year I had done about ten by now. And every time there's a thread moaning about summer, I hide it. I'm even still wearing socks!

But there is a flipside to the "meh" weather being now: teenagers are still stuck in exam rooms. Two years ago there was a three-week heatwave in June, which was no use to those taking exams, and then July and August were rubbish. So there is hope yet for this year!

Anyway, summer doesn't start until 21st June. (Gavel) I used to tell my mum off for saying it was winter in November, or even early December. I also used to go mad when children's stories and songs missed out autumn. "The long, hot summer had ended at last. Now it was winter."

mogtheexcellent · 12/06/2019 12:33

Its normal and has been for years. Every time my roses start blooming it pisses down. Particulalry the Hot Chocolate rose. I know because I post pictures on my timeline on FB.

Summer will return though as for the last 5 years its been hot on my daughters birthday in late June. I know this because we have always had a party in the garden and have to put a gazebo up to shade the kids from the sun.

ReggaetonLente · 12/06/2019 15:25

I was heavily pregnant last summer and it was horrendous in the heatwave. This summer, that I've got at home to enjoy with my baby, looks set to be a washout. Typical!

Ohnotanothernamechange · 12/06/2019 15:34

It's actually stopped raining now. Still miserable and damp, but the rain has stopped thank god!

And yes, we might have needed the rain but there has been really bad localised flooding here. Some roads are completley impassible.

It's fucking misery. The thoughts of facing into Winter with no actual summer is bleak......

Jonette · 12/06/2019 16:02

My weather app is saying 21, 23, 24, 22 and 21 degrees for Monday - Friday next week. Until then, we've rain.

Branleuse · 12/06/2019 16:20

The whole country is getting loads of rain but its supposed to clear up and be warm here again next week

Defenbaker · 12/06/2019 16:35

It does seem pretty bleak, but it looks like it will improve next week.

It has been covered in the news and very extensively in the BBC weather reports.

Two or three weeks with rain most days is depressing but not freaky weather conditions as far as the UK goes. We were a bit spoilt by last year's heatwave, though I found it too hot at times so ideally I'd hope for a happy medium... a warm summer, with a bit of rain once or twice a week, would suit me.

Bluerussian · 12/06/2019 16:39

It's not that bad. Some fine rain today, not cold, quite pleasant really.

Jonette · 12/06/2019 16:41

It's 14 degrees!

GiantKitten · 12/06/2019 16:45

This is one of the few things FB is great for - I'm always getting pics of spectacularly shit weather from previous years in On This Day. Sometimes it's the same day every year Grin

I do live in Lancashire, mind you, but still. Last year was exceptional. This is perfectly normal!

GiantKitten · 12/06/2019 16:49

Also, despite (or perhaps because of) being in Lancashire, we had an outstanding Easter - 4 perfectly glorious days in a row, which was wonderful because all my grown-up kids were home for it.

YorkieTheRabbit · 12/06/2019 17:05

12 degrees today, rained this morning then drizzling ever since, 13 tomorrow so positively roasting after high of 9 yesterday Hmm it’s often changeable in June, Father’s Day it seems to rain when many people want to BBQ but it’s usually warm and sunny on my birthday which is a few days later. I’m hoping it’s going to warm up, it’s only 13 in the greenhouse and the garden is somewhat battered
