Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Macintosh red apples. They were amazing too ☹️

"Typewriters in my second job, so about 31 years ago.
Followed by word processors which linked up in a very basic way although I hesitate to call them
Computers."

My first admin job involved fax machine, telex machine, duplicator, dot matrix printer, adding machine and a VERY pre-Windows computer that would crash completely approx once a week! Those administrators that started post Windows etc don't know they're born.

My first degree was powered by a "fancy" electric typewriter and microfiche!

"Friends reunited" - marriage wreckers United it should've been called, I know a good few instances of rekindled "first love" messes that occurred because of that site!

@WeeMadArthur: it's called Shambles Sweet Shop!

You can actually see the bonbons! Second photo, second shelf down 😄 My only disappointment was asking for a quarter and being told they only sell in metric measures!

sashh · 10/06/2019 03:32

How does that work sassh ? Do you mean the mothers throw away the contraceptives and take thalidomide for leprosy?

That's exactly what I mean.

There are other factors but the bottomline is people are being born with disabilities who should be able bodied.

Vol-au-vents! Tried to find them for a retro buffet recently and you can't find them anywhere

You can get them frozen. Or just buy frozen puff pastry and cut them yourself.

Latchkey dogs just trotting along the pavement going from A to B by themselves.

Now a loose dog is a rare sight and most people would assume it's lost and report or try to catch it (this is a good thing).

My parents still have the BT dial phone. It’s amazing, it works in a powercut. But I don’t think I could use it to dial a number, I never was any good at it. You used to get one with the line rental.

DH has a pager for work, it’s very amusing. People do comment on his 90’s communication aid. Unfortunately he has to wear it when he’s on call. I don’t know why they don’t use mobile phones, but it’s pagers.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/06/2019 07:05

Hypercolour global t shirts. They were very strange. I feel really cool in mine. Although it did show where you were warmest, I don’t think they ever really caught on.

wowfudge · 10/06/2019 07:35

@Moanger Vitalite is most definitely still around.

WeeMadArthur · 10/06/2019 07:38

@omafiet I can see them, but the shop isn’t online, aargh!

Pharlapwasthebest · 10/06/2019 07:47

Never seen a house with vertical blinds(SE), we all have the horizontal blinds or curtains round here. They look like office blinds.

LadySainsburySeal · 10/06/2019 09:10

I remember collecting scented erasers/rubbers in shapes like a cheeseburger, sausages, Rubik's cube, flowers, cars, furniture, cakes, sweets, animals; you name it. I, and my friends had a whole shoe box full each which you swapped or gloated over the newer acquisitions which actually smelled vaguely like the food or sweets they were meant to be.

The pools man and the cancer and polio man (fundraising charity prize draw) would call on a Friday.

Retro sweets including lemon bonbons

bebeboeuf · 10/06/2019 09:14

I’m in SE and I work in a near dilapidated 50’s building with probably what are the original vertical blinds.

I’ve never seen a house with them though.

No one seems to have curtains any more. Just horizontal wooden blinds.

Terance Conran had a lot to do with this trend

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2019 09:14

Dd(7) collects novelty erasers!some scented, some not.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/06/2019 09:38

Novelty erasers are still a thing.

Younger women (under 25) with short haircuts, unless they're LGBT. I really worry that good pixie cuts are going the way of the shampoo and set, because I can't do long hair at all and it makes me look rubbish.

fairweathercyclist · 10/06/2019 10:45

People with pigeon toes. You just don’t see that anymore

I'm pigeon toed and I don'g think I'm the only one! Makes me good at front crawl and utterly rubbish at breast-stroke because I can't turn my feet out enough.

I have a landline though barely ever use it, text people, have a CD player and listen to albums all the way through (or listen to them via my MP3 player). We even have some cassettes! Have a nest of tables too, only bought about 8 years ago.

I like vertical blinds. I am in the "net curtains are crimes against humanity" brigade.

Mac47 · 10/06/2019 11:05

@BikeRunSki
If your dd would like my 1980s collection to add to her own, pm me and she is most welcome to them. Wanted to get rid for ages, but loathe to just chuck them and can't find anyone who wants them. There's about 30 or so.

MockerstheFeManist · 10/06/2019 11:13

In CEX this morning behind irate bloke complaining that old model iPod no longer works since Apple shut down iTunes.

Shades of VW killing the Beetle because it was too good and people were buying one and keeping it for years rather than continually upgrading.

recall · 10/06/2019 11:24

Sparrows ....I’m sure there used to be loads more flying about

kaitlinktm · 10/06/2019 11:25

People who don't have vertical blinds but have patio doors - what do you use?

BillGiggeloe · 10/06/2019 11:32

Thelwell Ponies...my dentist as a child had one on the ceiling you could look at while being treated.

Also "Love Is" cartoons.

1/2 pence piece and the 1/2p sweets you could buy with them.
