Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Apparently shire horses are on the verge of extinction. Their main function was to pull plows and deliver beer when it was generally made and sold locally and this doesn't happen any more, so there are now hardly any left and may die out within a few years unless new ones are deliberately bred for conservation purposes.

I’ve never seen a house with them though.

Must be a regional thing, or maybe those in the S/E have plenty of money to spend on wooden blinds. Here in the North, I looked around yesterday as a result of this thread and I'd say a third of housing have vertical blinds!

Moanger · 10/06/2019 11:42

@wowfudge I’ve not seen a tub of Vitalite in years. I’d say since late 90’s.

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/06/2019 11:44

@Moanger I have two in my fridge, recently bought from Tesco. The old round tub has long gone through.

SherlockHolmesPipe · 10/06/2019 11:45

My libido. My youth. My hopes and dreams....😥😥😥

Moanger · 10/06/2019 11:49

A bit of a random one - do any of the newly built houses have cellars?

Moanger · 10/06/2019 11:52

@Disfordarkchocolate I rarely go to Tesco. I just remember it as a kid being everywhere. Maybe I just don’t see it if it looks like everything else. 🙂

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/06/2019 11:55

You're not missing anything Moanger, it's awful but as its dairy free we need it for toast etc for my son.

Ivy44 · 10/06/2019 11:57

I’ve got vertical blinds on my patio doors. The rest of the house is plantation shutters downstairs, roller blinds plus curtains in the bedroom for heat/dark depending on the season bathroom just has a roller blind.

Ivy44 · 10/06/2019 12:02

The patio doors with vertical blinds are at the end of the kitchen. Plantations are the bay window at the front of the house (living room) and the dining room window that looks out on to the back garden.

I’m in the north.

Wasn’t quite sure about the verticals in the patio windows at the end of the kitchen but couldn’t think of an alternative.

jennymanara · 10/06/2019 12:12

I really don't understand why people like plantation shutters in windows that are looking on to the street. I like light to come into my rooms, not have half the window cut off by a wooden shutter.

bebeboeuf · 10/06/2019 12:21

Agree jenny. The frames on plantations cut out way more light and to fully open them means you have massive wooden frames folded into your room so not practical

Standard horizontal wooden blinds give the same privacy if needed but can be fully opened for more light and don’t cut out half as much light as plantations

LadySainsburySeal · 10/06/2019 12:23

I'm pleased that novelty erasers are still a thing Grin however I was referring to the scented food shaped erasers that had a ban in some countries because younger children were tempted to eat them and there was a risk of choking.

bobstersmum · 10/06/2019 12:26

I have no idea if they're called this but we called the white lacy things people (old people) would put over the back of their settee or chair arm doilies, what on earth were they about?

lightlypoached · 10/06/2019 12:31

men whistling

thenightsky · 10/06/2019 12:35

jennymanara · 10/06/2019 12:49

You still get clothing catalogues. My mum buys most of her clothes through them. But they will die out as the older generation die out.

Moanger · 10/06/2019 12:54

@Disfordarkchocolate I’m not going to buy any, I just want to look at it! 🤣🤣🤣

@lightlypoached plenty of whistling men at my work. DH whistles a lot too. It does my head in.

Aaarrgghh · 10/06/2019 13:01

Campino sweets! Most beautiful tasting sweet ever, vanished from the face of the earth. Had a google just now and you can get a bag for like £16 on amazon..
