Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Sending postcards when you're on holiday.

FrenchyQ · 09/06/2019 18:43

We have an ice cream van come around most days....it sends my dogs crazy, they howl when they hear his music.
We also have a chip van too

mamaduckbone · 09/06/2019 18:49

Vol-au-vents! Tried to find them for a retro buffet recently and you can't find them anywhere

Bookridden · 09/06/2019 18:51

Decent magazines.

mamaduckbone · 09/06/2019 18:56

The corona pop man who used to deliver bottles of fizzy pop door to door once a week. You got 10p back from your empty bottles the next week. So much more environmentally friendly.

Willweeverfindout · 09/06/2019 18:57

Adam’s apples.

ifeellikeanidiot · 09/06/2019 18:58

Football pools

WeShouldBeFriends · 09/06/2019 18:59

Going to the village shop and putting stuff 'in the book' I didn't think I was that old but remember my parents doing this, I doubt many small shops offer such informal credit these days!

QuestionableMouse · 09/06/2019 19:00

@mamaduckbone

Try the frozen pastry bit. groceries.morrisons.com/webshop/product/Jus-Rol-Vol-Au-Vent-18-Medium/437100011

I think I've seen them in Iceland too.

BedraggledBlitz · 09/06/2019 19:02

@MissLadyM I never realised Angela Rippon created Victoria Plum! I was a big VP fan in the 80s.

mabelisable · 09/06/2019 19:02

I actually saw one today that I thought had disappeared - hitchhikers.

Used to live in London and there was always loads there. Moved to Yorkshire and never see them, then, this morning I saw one and it made me think of this thread.

Not sure if they really had disappeared or if I just don't see them because I've moved to a different area.

Are hitchhikers still a common thing?

Nannewnannew · 09/06/2019 19:11

Soda stream. I can’t remember seeing one for years.

kaitlinktm · 09/06/2019 19:19

I got a Sodastream for Christmas!

WegmansCookies · 09/06/2019 19:21

Just the other day, I realised that six-packs of fuzzy drinks are never held together with those bird-strangling plastic rings anymore. They come in boxes now. Not sure if six-pack rings were an American thing (I mostly grew up in the US), but they've definitely disappeared.

Ivy44 · 09/06/2019 19:22

@mama

I’m sure I’ve seen vol au vonts in Iceland.

Soola · 09/06/2019 19:24

I had no idea about Angela Rippin and Victoria Plum books either! Wow Shock

Ivy44 · 09/06/2019 19:25

@mabel
I think we’ve become less trusting of each other as a society. The only ones I ever see are scruffy looking men at service stations, too much of a risk to pick them up.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 09/06/2019 19:27

Porn in hedge rows.

user1469830006 · 09/06/2019 19:27

Baby on board signs

Ivy44 · 09/06/2019 19:29

@mama
We used to be much more environmentally friendly years ago didn’t we. Fish and chips in newspaper, rather than those polystyrene boxes, fruit and veg in brown paper bags, every thing sold loose so you only bought what you needed, drinking water out of a glass from the tap rather than buying plastic bottles of water.

Ivy44 · 09/06/2019 19:30

😂😂😂
I remember this. How come porn mags used to end up hedgerows?

jennymanara · 09/06/2019 19:37

Hitchhikers have almost totally gone. I see one about once or twice a year. It used to be common. I hitchhiked. I think people just became more afraid to pick up strangers and to hitchhike.

Ice cream in cardboard, rather than a plastic tub. Much more environmentally friendly, and it has gone.
Not necessarily. It’s incredibly difficult to recycle plastic/cardboard laminates, and you can’t put uncoated cardboard next to ice cream.

Lampshades with tassels around the bottom. They all used to have them, but no more.

jennymanara · 09/06/2019 19:39

Pretty sure the cardboard that was used in the past was uncoated.
