Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Coloured cotton wool balls, pastel blue and pink in a fancy glass jar.

*Are people mistaking vertical blinds for roller blinds or are there really streets of the UK liked with these? They remind me of offices in the 80s!

I agree! They look terrible, really cheap (even though I know they're not.)

fedup21 · 09/06/2019 16:38

@ChemMouse I remember seeing those in my friend’s mum’s house and thinking that they were SO sophisticated!!

omafiet · 09/06/2019 16:45

Proper Lemon Bonbons, with lovely lemony powder and lemon toffee inside. I’ve looked everywhere!

@WeeMadArthur I am currently eating one! I was back in the U.K. recently and went to York for the day. There's an old fashioned sweet shop on Shambles that sells everything from my childhood. Strawberry and lemon bonbons, cola cubes, rhubarb and custard boiled sweets...it's like going back in time!

WeeMadArthur · 09/06/2019 16:51

@omafiet Really?!?!? With lovely thick powder and lemony toffee? What is the shop called? If they are online I’m ordering a whole box!

GummyGoddess · 09/06/2019 16:54

Boxes of smarties at the theatre. I liked to see how many I could fit in my mouth at once.

Ivy44 · 09/06/2019 17:20

@weemadarthur

Hensons sweets in Manchester Arndale do them. Mr Simms Olde sweet shop may be worth a look to. Assume they’ve got websites.

For the person that was asking about thalidomide in South America.

WeeMadArthur · 09/06/2019 17:29

@Ivy44 I will have a look thanks

Postal orders. As a child in the 70s (yes, I'm old Grin) we used to get 50p ones from relatives for birthdays, which were converted to cash and paid into our Post Office Savings account. Sometimes you had to use them to buy mail order items from adverts in magazines. I last bought one in about the late 90s I think. They must have gone sometime after that.

CrunchyCrumpet · 09/06/2019 17:48

Had to google candlewick bedspread and it has flooded me with memories of a bloody awful salmon pink one I had growing up, can't believe they still make them!

StCharlotte · 09/06/2019 17:55

Decent sized car park spaces.

I think you mean reasonably sized cars Grin

ooooohbetty · 09/06/2019 18:04

@omafiet yes, lots of people have them here. Not a fan myself.

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 09/06/2019 18:06

Little families of clip on furry animals. My gran had koalas and we had pandas. They were came in groups of 4 of various sizes. Loved them but haven't seen them for years.

viques · 09/06/2019 18:11

I read an article in the guardian online. THere is apparently only one Blockbuster Video store left in the entire world! People go to visit it specially to show their (bored, uncaring, shoulder shrugging) children what life was like back in the day.....

Phones with dials! Was watching Killing Eve last night and she was using a dial phone, it looked so strange, and took so l o n g.

Soola · 09/06/2019 18:12

Who used to stick these on their monitor?

Things that disappeared, without you realising?
maddiemookins16mum · 09/06/2019 18:13

Those little pennant shaped car stickers that you got on holiday. The back of our Austin Allegro had loads, Looe, St Ives, Blackpool, Tenby etc.

viques · 09/06/2019 18:16

Owlish I open post for a charity and we sometimes get postal orders as donations. I always have to do a double take. It must be a hassle getting them, I can't imagine not even having a cheque book. Or even an equestrian book as spellcheck just quaintly suggested.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/06/2019 18:17

Something I've noticed in the area I live in is the decline of the traditional Chinese restaurant. We only seem to have takeaways or those awful all you can eat buffet type places now.

We have to go into London's China Town now to sit down and and have good Chinese food served to us at a table by an actual waiter.

Going out for a proper Chinese meal was such a treat when I was growing up. We'd be so excited if we got a table with a lazy susan in the middle. There were lots of restaurants to chose from and many put on cheesy discos or entertainment to attract customers.

There is still a Chinese restaurant in a town about 5 miles away and we went there a few months ago but it was terrible - it is obviously struggling to survive. There's another one 5 miles in the other direction but when I checked the reviews the other day they were dreadful.

😂 I remember my mum getting me to pick games.

BarbaraofSevillle · 09/06/2019 18:26

Those rubber strips you hung off your car bumper that were supposed to prevent travel sickness.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/06/2019 18:27

Are people mistaking vertical blinds for roller blinds or are there really streets of the UK liked with these? They remind me of offices in the 80s!

I was going to order some vertical blinds for my daughter's bedroom this week. Now I'm worried!

Her room has one entire side that is just one big french door plus side panels opening out onto a balcony. At the moment we have curtains but they dominate the room ( which isn't very big). Shutters would be ideal but would cost an absolute fortune so I thought vertical blinds would be the answer. It's too big an area for roller blinds.

Owlish · 09/06/2019 18:29

Viques, they actually cost more than the face value for the buyer, too. Very odd. I. Surprised they're still going Shock

NicoAndTheNiners · 09/06/2019 18:34

I still have an outside loo. It still works, fully plumbed in and flushes and still gets used.
