Although it hasn't got as hot as it was last year (yet) I feel like I've already had enough. I'm got hayfever, I can't go outside without insects getting in my face and I'm already feeling hot and sticky. I also want to go to bed and someone round here is having an outdoors party. Yes I'm a Scrooge, no I don't care. Roll on autumn and crisp sunny days and frost and apples and brightly coloured leaves (ahh, I feel cooler already.)

I've never found a maxi dress with anything longer than cap sleeves, so armpit hair and sun exposure is an issue with them, they are really impractical too, a tripping hazard on stairs and rarely having pockets. I do wear linen trousers but they crease, flap about and are far less practical than jeans. Unless you cover up head to toe there is a need for suncream. Give me winter clothes every time. I appreciate you starting to understand a bit better though.

DappledThings · 04/06/2019 23:03

My rosacea is triggered by both sunshine and sun cream. That's such fun.

It's been looking good for ages and last night exploded into red, itchy bumps all down one side of my face.

MustBeThin · 04/06/2019 23:07

What sums cream do you use Dappled my Rosacea can only tolerate mineral. I've used Coola spf30 mineral cucumber or Austrailan Gold Botanicals spf50. The Australian Gold is lovely because it is tinted but I'm Casper white and it doesn't make me look orange or anything.

DappledThings · 04/06/2019 23:10

MustBeThin Just whatever I see in the supermarket when I need it I admit. Just sort of accepted the flare ups. But having just discovered sulphur soap (from another MN) thread and starting to see results from that it would be good to try to help keep on top of it. So thank you for the tips, I will check them out. Much appreciated

TheFirstOHN · 04/06/2019 23:22

However, we have had 13 degrees and torrential rain

Well yes, somewhere in between would be ideal.

I'm enjoying the fact that my bedroom is now cool enough to sleep in.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 04/06/2019 23:57

I feel your pain Dappled Had to work outside on Saturday, it was the hottest day of the year in London. Luckily I was by the River Thames and there was a slight breeze coming off the water. I have scars on my arms from scratching due to chronic Ezema so I was forced to wear a long sleeved Jacket.

I have Rosacea and Occular Rosacea.. Next day I woke up and looked like I had been out on the lash!. Red pinprick spots all over, bright red nose and bloodshot bleury eyes!!Angry

resisterpersister · 05/06/2019 00:02

In the south east.

After a grey but muggy day, went to pick the DC up. There was a lovely, refreshing light rain in the air, and the hills were covered in mist. Atmospheric and lovely. Not hot, not cold, just nice.

I thought of you lot :)

TapasForTwo · 05/06/2019 09:50

I won't be cracking out my summer clothes anytime soon Sad

Anyone want to move to South Yorkshire?

It's time... Yes we fucking hate summer.
Emmabryant123 · 05/06/2019 11:28

tapas why are you here if you like summer?
Your not helpful to those who struggle

LoafofSellotape · 05/06/2019 11:38

15 where I am, nice day,I have the doors open and just had a coffee in the garden ,perfect 😊

RosaWaiting · 05/06/2019 11:55

Last summer, I arrived at mum's in linen trousers and linen shirt. Her neighbour immediately said to me "why are you all covered up, it's SUNNY" in a tone of complete disbelief.

I find that happens a lot. Apparently I am supposed to display my legs in summer - horrible eczema scars - when I explain that, I get all the pity looks and the "I'm sure it's not that bad". I don't even care any more - it's better than faffing with sun cream.

I also mostly wear trainers in summer as well because we're in London and you can't really walk anywhere without feet getting filthy or risking a bit of glass getting into sandals etc, so I stick with trainers. I never commute to work with sandals on either, though I keep them under the desk there.

so many comments - as if it's a crime not to be wearing shorts and vest top when the sun emerges. Floaty dress is also popular - I don't do dresses or skirts.

still, I live in hope - looking ahead for the next few days, there is no sign of a heatwave - fingers crossed again for a cool summer.

ExpletiveDelighted · 05/06/2019 11:57

Yes, forecast looking good here for the next couple of weeks, max of about 21C.

TapasForTwo · 05/06/2019 12:59

RosaWaiting one of my friends is a dermatologist, and she has seen huge increases in cases of skin cancer. Covering up with light clothes is a far, far better and safer option than having to smother yourself in sunscreen. Your mum's neighbour is an idiot.

RosaWaiting · 05/06/2019 13:39

Tapas loads of people say it though - my mum's neighbour is lovely, I feel I should add that Grin

but generally another thing I hate about summer is the expectation to show a lot of skin. I think if you are a woman who doesn't want to conform to all the looks-based stuff it's an issue too - polish toe nails, blah. Hate all that.

I thought skin cancer had gone down, so that's interesting. I thought there was more awareness than there was when I was a teenager, for example. My primary school would never have said about putting sunscreen on kids. I'm 43, don't know if that was just my school maybe.

RosaWaiting · 05/06/2019 13:40

oh and I said this last year on the other thread - running is quite grim in hot weather, I find it triggers my asthma. But what I really noticed last year was areas of tarmac that got bouncy because of the heat! Ick.

GummyGoddess · 05/06/2019 17:03

I can't find any comfortable summer clothes. No dresses as my legs rub together and then I have to find a cardigan to go over the top as I don't like having my arms out, possible with shorts underneath but then too hot. No cool trousers as floaty trousers or linen ones look awful on me. All the styles make me look rather blimp like so I assume it's the material?

lololove · 05/06/2019 19:01

I went out today on various errands. I wore a khaki cotton top and light cotton bottoms. I walked for half an hour to my destination and then around 2 places - my back was soaked to the point the khaki had gone black from it in places.

I know I have medical issues that cause 95% of it and without the medication it would have been worse but I hate it so much. It wasn't even that hot today - I think 20/22 tops. It's only going to get worse. Angry Angry

Daphnesmate · 05/06/2019 20:21

I like this weather and hate bright sunshine that is capable of burning you within minutes without sun cream; apart from the school run, I tend to stay inside on days like this. Hoping this current weather will continue for a while, I feel comfortable although I take dd to school with both a sun hat and a coat at the moment because it is so mixed.

Rockbird · 05/06/2019 20:42

There was a lovely breeze today and it was warm but not hot. Much better.

UnderPompeii · 05/06/2019 21:18

Its a bit chilly this evening. I have my slippers and furry fleece on. I am Smile

GummyGoddess · 05/06/2019 21:47

Definitely nicer this evening, we had proper AC units installed in the bedrooms in 2017 and I haven't had to turn them on today! Best money ever spent on a house project. When they installed them their temperature meter read over 50C in our loft and they had to go in 2-3 minute shifts up there! After ours, they implemented a company policy saying they will not do an installation if the temperature is over 40C.

They're only upstairs though, and I can't stay upstairs all day with 2 small children. The downstairs and outside are just unbearable in the summer.

SapphireSeptember · 05/06/2019 22:44

It's been cooler where I am the past few days and yesterday it rained! My hayfever is still bad though. I feel like I've got a really bad head cold, everything is bunged up. No heat wave, please weather gods!

I'm going on holiday in August, it can be nice then, sunny but not to hot (as I'll be wearing wizard robes most of the time) and I'm taking a mini electric fan with me. Seems like a good idea as the accommodation is really basic (I might need a travel kettle as well, I need tea first thing in the morning!) Also waterproof parasol and hand fan, depending on the forecast.

Once DD goes to university I think we will have to move further south. I would love 21 degrees. We had 16 degrees today, and it is now 9 degrees outside.

lorit · 06/06/2019 05:44

I agree with the poster up thread who mentioned the bad heatwave started in May last year. We'd already had about four weeks of high 20s/early 30s where I live, so I do feel like there's been a respite this year already. I remember the despair and panic realising it just wasn't going to stop.

Hope it stays bearable!

borntobequiet · 06/06/2019 06:32

Sympathies to those who don’t like the heat - I only become uncomfortable at about 24/25 deg C. I try to stay out of the sun between 11am and 4pm and if I’m at home I might take a very quick tepid (not cold) shower in the afternoon and definitely before bed, I find that helps. I take holidays in November or February in southern Europe where it feels more like September or May do here - temps in the high teens/low 20s, a bit of breeze and a few showers, perfect for me and really inexpensive.
