It's time... Yes we fucking hate summer.

Although it hasn't got as hot as it was last year (yet) I feel like I've already had enough. I'm got hayfever, I can't go outside without insects getting in my face and I'm already feeling hot and sticky. I also want to go to bed and someone round here is having an outdoors party. Yes I'm a Scrooge, no I don't care. Roll on autumn and crisp sunny days and frost and apples and brightly coloured leaves (ahh, I feel cooler already.)

Today is lovely. Sunny (I do like the sun - just not the heat!) but only 16 degrees. Perfect.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 06/06/2019 12:41

The weathers lovely in SE London. It rained, nice cold rain as well not luke warm. Suns out but not really hot. Nice breeze. Praying for a rainy, breezy, cloudy summerSmile

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/06/2019 13:06

17 and sunny here too, perfect. The humidity from last weekend has cleared away now.

Becca19962014 · 06/06/2019 13:20

Can't make it's mind up here, hammering with rain one minute, sun the next. Feeling unwell today, despite temp being ok (just under 18 inside), I guess because the weather keeps rapidly cycling.

ErichVonStalheim · 06/06/2019 14:03

Sympathies to those who don’t like the heat - I only become uncomfortable at about 24/25 deg C

I suppose my OH and I are a pair of lucky ones. Quite happy with 35-40 degrees. Prefer it 30 or less for sleeping though and I do stay out of the sun.

Rockbird · 06/06/2019 15:08

Yep, perfect day here in Surrey. Sunny but breezy. This until October would be fine.

SapphireSeptember · 06/06/2019 15:18

Urgh, my two most irritating housemates are holding court in the kitchen, why can't Invisibility Cloaks be a real thing? (I need to go downstairs but I don't want to, I hate banal chit-chat.)

Meanwhile, the sun is shining but my room feels cool, result!

Becca I'm not surprised you're feeling unwell, I always find weather that can't make up it's mind is a perfect breeding ground for germs. Also I've found that hot sunshine combined with grey clouds that look like they're going to rain always makes me feel a little queasy, I don't know why.

Bloody hell, this thread shouldn't even exist yet. There have only been a couple of hot weekends so far. What are you going to be like in a proper heatwave?

Anyway, my heatwave tip (if it hasn't already been said): frozen picnic ice pack thingy wrapped in a teatowel/spare pillowcase and left under your pillow. You can turn over the pillow throughout the night and it will always be cool. You're welcome.

Becca19962014 · 06/06/2019 15:31

what are you going to be like in a proper heatwave

Probably dead. Literally. I'm terrified of there being a 'proper heatwave'.

Unfortunately I don't have a freezer for that tip but am sure others will appreciate it.

lorit · 06/06/2019 15:35

Charlotte, perhaps you're new to Mumsnet? You can just hide threads you don't like rather than actively knocking everyone on them. It's just a bit kinder.

Also a bit baffled by the "I just LOVE 40 degrees and above weather" comments. Would you go onto an infertility thread and say "well I have lots of children so I'm fine"? For some posters here, summer heatwaves causes similar levels of pain and anxiety, and this is one tiny thread on the Internet they can talk to each other.

Emmabryant123 · 06/06/2019 15:44

The fact we are approaching the longest day without signs of any heatwave atm is a huge relief to me
Please please 🙏 can we have a cooler one this year
Winter was so mild Here it didn't even make up for last summers hell

StCharlotte · 06/06/2019 15:52

I think I may start up a business making thin cotton not too tight not frilly or lacy under shorts Grin may need a more catchy name

Is it time for a return to "directoire knickers"? It seems they actually served a purpose other than being passion killers.

StCharlotte · 06/06/2019 15:55

lorit

Sorry I didn't mean to come across as unkind.

I thought my second paragraph was "kinder" though or at least useful.

(And no, I'm not new to MN. Just new to this name.)

Becca19962014 · 06/06/2019 15:57

Sorry for snapping.
Not a good day.

SapphireSeptember · 06/06/2019 16:09

I'm sorry Becca, I'm sincerely hoping we have a cooler summer this year.

Charlotte Thanks for the tip! We were awful last year. I spent much of the summer obsessively checking the weather, UV levels, pollen count humidity, and the thunderstorm tracker thingy. I work in a kitchen which is horrendous in the summer, and I end up bringing a change of clothes to work because by the time I've finished work i'm soaked. I can't use antiperspirant or shave my under-arms as both things bring me out in a nasty rash (both fairly recent things, I dunno how my armpits got so sensitive) so that's another level of feeling horrible in the summer. I swear one year I'm going to feel confident enough to show my hairy legs to the world, but until that day long floaty skirts and dresses it is.

For legs rubbing together can I recommend using stick or roll on deodorant on your thighs in the morning, ensuring it is dry before walking. It has been a bloody revelation!

RosaWaiting · 06/06/2019 16:13

"The fact we are approaching the longest day without signs of any heatwave atm is a huge relief to me "

this. I've been concerned since May after the horror that was last year.

Becca, I'm sorry you're feeling ill. I think we probably talked about this last year but the migraine cool patches might be of help to you.

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/06/2019 16:16

Yes, after it being so hot at Easter I was worried we were in for a very long heatwave again but so far so good.

LittleSwede · 06/06/2019 16:34

Just popping in to say I am not keen on summer either. Fingers crossed for a cooler one. I get a rash on my arms from the sun and since entering layer thirties I seem to sweat and suffer with the heat a lot more than I used to. Add in an ASD child who hates insects and can't be trusted around pools or beaches and I am much happier at a maximum of 20 degrees. I love a bit of summer rain too of course!

For those of us suffering from chafing I recommend Sloggi long legged briefs (around a tenner on Amazon) a bit like cycling shorts but in thin cotton. Discovered these a couple of years ago and I can now wear a dress comfortably should I choose to (although I am happier in linen trousers).

ALongHardWinter · 06/06/2019 18:18

While we're on the subject of heat waves, does anyone remember The Great Heatwave of 1976? I was 12 at the time, and can remember thinking that it was great! Day after day of endless sunny weather, sleeping in my tent in the back garden, picnics in the park, spending all day in the paddling pool...... I don't ever remember being bothered about the heat. It's a different story now though. I HATE the hot weather with a vengeance. The thought of 8 or 9 weeks without rain and temperatures consistently in the low 30s (like in 1976) would fill me with dread.

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/06/2019 18:24

I think it was 1976 that started the hatred for me, it was awful.

TapasForTwo · 06/06/2019 19:12

I remember the summer of 1976. I was 17, and life was carefree. My friends and I went on a camping holiday and had a blast. I prefer temperatures in the low to mid 20s now that I am older.

mogloveseggs · 06/06/2019 19:19

Hate hate hate hot weather. Although I can cope abroad under a parasol on the beach.
Cool here today though. Have put the heating on as house is at 10 degrees.

Becca19962014 · 06/06/2019 19:24

Wish mine was mog it's 19 here again.

TapasForTwo · 06/06/2019 20:13

I went out running at 6 when it was 18 degrees. One hour later it was 10 degrees.
