Actually was just a normal food or drink? Mine was pure orange juice my parents only bought it at Christmas Confused

Smoked salmon served in minuscule slices at Christmas.
How my DM made it stretch, I don’t know...

Can’t ever recall eating salmon fillets at all. I think they were too expensive.

After seeing that programme about Scottish salmon farming last week, I think we may give it a wide berth anyway...

NCB2019 · 25/05/2019 22:16

A can of Nourishment chocolate milkshake.

Vienetta.

Eggs bread with sugar on.

StyleOfTheTimes · 25/05/2019 22:19

My mum would only ever buy licorice all sorts at Christmas and my dad had to have the Bertie basset every time!

thenightsky · 25/05/2019 22:21

Tinned mandarin segments in their own juice, which curdled when mum drizzled tinned carnation milk over them of a Sunday night tea.

thenightsky · 25/05/2019 22:24

Orange juice was actually 'Rise and Shine' powder.

AdaColeman · 25/05/2019 22:24

Dates at Christmas were a huge treat.
In the summer, ice cream with a spoon of rosehip syrup drizzled over.
Pancakes or waffles with golden syrup.
Strawberries with top of the milk spooned over, we only occasionally had cream.
Home made cake occasionally.
Bread and butter sprinkled with hundreds & thousands, sometimes for breakfast if recovering from being ill, called Fairy Bread.

I can't remember us ever having fresh orange juice, I think that it just wasn't available.

MarieToulouseBerlioz · 25/05/2019 22:27

Angel delight 😋

TheSandman · 25/05/2019 22:28

Sliced Mars Bar. Seriously. My mum would slice Mars Bars - 5mm thick slices one at a time if we were good.

50+ years later I still feel weird eating a whole one.

AdaColeman · 25/05/2019 22:28

Smile Oh yes, you knew you were at death's door when you got a small wine glass of Lucozade!

MyBlueMoonbeam · 25/05/2019 22:30

Club biscuits - orange were my favourite.
Fizzy drinks were made from the Soda syphon.
Vol au vents were treats as was creme caramel - very middle class 60s 😆

AdaColeman · 25/05/2019 22:30

I still slice up a Mars Bar!

3boysandabump · 25/05/2019 22:31

I used to slice up mars bars for my Barbie dolls

whitehalleve · 25/05/2019 22:31

Orange juice, certain fruits, garibaldi biscuits, fizzy drinks.

latedecember1963 · 25/05/2019 22:31

Oh, what a lovely wander down memory lane.
My dad's auntie always served us Ritz crackers topped with Phillidelphia cheese.

Vol au vents filled with undiluted Campbell's condensed mushroom soup.

A Marks and Spencer Rum Baba.

Sliced banana, sprinkled with sugar and served with a spoonful of condensed milk.

Jersey Royal potatoes. I still love Jersey Royals, I think it's because they have a relatively short season.

slug · 25/05/2019 22:32

Coco pops. Best part of Christmas Day.

Whitefishy · 25/05/2019 22:33

Plain old squash. We only got it at birthday parties.

lalafafa · 25/05/2019 22:33

I only dreamed of those mini multi packs of cereals, swore I would treat myself to them when I grew up.
I always wanted a breakfast plate made out of rock, you got them from the sea side.
Never ate out, only allowed a bag of chips to share with scraps thrown on.
Eating wasn’t a hobby in the 70’s as it is now. We only ate at meal times, maybe an apple or a carrot as a snack. One bag of crisps each week.
I dreamt of eating a Toblerone, Ritter sport and Munchies, all were really expensive, 35p I think.

MsMustDoBetter · 25/05/2019 22:34

I remember being given half a pomegranate with a pin and thinking it was the most exotic thing ever!

Ditto a mango.

HundredMilesAnHour · 25/05/2019 22:34

My Grandma used to slice up Mars Bars. I'd forgotten all about it. Thank you so much for reminding me. She died many years ago but this thread is a lovely reminder of happy memories past.

MsMustDoBetter · 25/05/2019 22:36

Although, such fruits were a rarity in the greengrocers at that time, not like the supermarket now. It made it more special that it was now or next year. A real seasonal treat.

Saisong · 25/05/2019 22:37

Sliced white bread!
And even better sugar sandwiches made with said bread!!

So many kids so we were only allowed 1 'daily fruit'

The other favourite was something Mum creatively called 'fairy bread' which was stale crusts baked to a crisp in the warming oven of the Aga (in the days when they weren't trendy). You pretty much had to suck it until soft enough to chew. Happy Days!

anitagreen · 25/05/2019 22:38

@HundredMilesAnHour she sounds lovely that's the type of thing mine used to do to share with me and my brothers Thanksx

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 25/05/2019 22:38

My parents NOT arguing for once? Wink

More mundanely, if I went shopping with mum, she'd let me buy a cake from the bakery. Apple turnovers were a favourite.

Tartyflette · 25/05/2019 22:42

Tinned asparagus served with my dad's special vinaigrette.
Totally weird but I still have a weakness for it sometimes.

TheSandman · 25/05/2019 22:45

Sliced white bread!

The first time my second daughter (then aged about 6 - so this would be about 7 years ago) met sliced white bread she looked at it. Poked it suspiciously . Turned it over and and asked - "Mum, is this brioche?"
