Actually was just a normal food or drink? Mine was pure orange juice my parents only bought it at Christmas Confused

Sliced white bread!

The first time my second daughter (then aged about 6 - so this would be about 7 years ago) met sliced white bread she looked at it. Poked it suspiciously . Turned it over and and asked - "Mum, is this brioche?"

Redpostbox · 25/05/2019 22:46

Grapes. Choc ice.
We didn't have orange juice but we had some kind of powdered orange juice occasionally. I think it was called Birds.

Lovesabadboy · 25/05/2019 22:51

Mushrooms!
We only had them on Boxing Day with a steak.

Also, as a PP said, yogurts were a treat.
I particularly loved the Ski yogurts which came in a milk churn shaped pot - they seemed massive and so creamy back then (early 70's)

NOOGADAH40 · 25/05/2019 22:58

McDonald's! We probably went once every 2months!
Also, my brother and I got a 'booty bag' every Saturday, the only day we were allowed to eat sweets!

MrsEricBana · 25/05/2019 23:05

Mushrooms here too, and treat of all treats - canned peaches in syrup.

legohouse · 25/05/2019 23:21

Ice Magic

PestoSnowissimos · 25/05/2019 23:22

When I was very very young, my mum would buy me & my friend a Jamboree bag. This was usually once a week when our mums met up for a coffee & catch up, alternating at each other’s houses. I loved the excitement of not knowing exactly what was inside.
It was a few sweets and I think maybe a teeny toy like you might get in a cracker nowadays.

CrazyCatNerd · 25/05/2019 23:33

A gingerbread man with orange eyes from Greggs.

A milk loaf with salted butter and blackberry jam.

I didn't have a Chinese until I was 15!

Scrumps from the chippy.

Once a year, we were allowed to get out and use the Mr Frosty machine, then DM would realise what a horrific mess it made and hide it put it away for another year.

yermawyabas · 25/05/2019 23:44

Vienetta

Mumsymumphy · 26/05/2019 00:58

Vimto. I only remember having it once as a kid and I spilt it. My mum said she'd never buy it again - and she didn't.

I still feel like I'm 'treating' my kids when I regularly buy it!

Pinkvoid · 26/05/2019 05:29

Fizzy drinks, my DM used to buy cheap supermarket ‘limeade’ or ‘raspberryade’ on very special occasions Grin.

Grapes. She didn’t buy them often because when she did, they’d be gone in an hour (it’s the same in our house now tbh).

The cheap microwave sponge puddings and custard.

Iced fingers on a Friday when DM did the food shop.

Longdistance · 26/05/2019 05:39

Helping mum with the shopping she’d always get us a treat after. When I got into my teenage years she’d buy us a curry patty from the market. They were delicious 😋 I still buy them to this day.

Broken biscuits in a huge box from the milkman. Once a month as a treat and we’d pick out the chocolate ones first. A plain rich tea biscuit just doesn’t cut it.

floraloctopus · 26/05/2019 05:40

Fried eggs. Maybe once or twice a year.

NorthernKnickers · 26/05/2019 05:44

Angel Delight and chips from the chippy (very rare treat that one!) Oh, and fruit that wasn't from a tin 😂

Ohyesiam · 26/05/2019 06:40

Does anyone remember Instant Whip? It was the Sainsbury’s version of Angel delight? Sainsbury’s was not the posh shop it is now, pyramids of tins on the ground, little fresh stuff( 70’s ).

The gutting disappointment if mum had accidentally picked up the yummy butterscotch instead of the yummy chocolate packet.

Also packet cheesecake mix.
Had artic roll a couple of times. blew my mind, Ice cream, cake ANDjam

Ces6 · 26/05/2019 06:41

Caramac bars when we went to the dentist. For a long time Ithought they were only for people going to the dentist.

EastMidsGPs · 26/05/2019 06:42

Iced Gems biscuits, a treat given to us by our neighbour.
Sorting out the different colours, then eating them one at a time by the icing off first. Then crunching the biscuit base. Bliss 😃

Ces6 · 26/05/2019 06:43

At my grandmother's house: Foxes glacier mints. Although this wasn't much of a treat as only she liked them.

Coniferhedge · 26/05/2019 07:21

Dream Topping. On Sundays Mum would make a batch of scones whilst cooking the Sunday dinner, then we’d have them with jam and Dream Topping for tea.

YoThePussy · 26/05/2019 07:31

Jelly with tinned fruit in, preferably the wired cubed fruits and glacé type cherries, also jelly with tinned mandarin orange slices. Made myself one a couple of weeks ago for old times sake. Not the same as the syrup is now low sugar.

Packet trifles with birds cream topping and hundreds and thousands. The H&T used to melt into the ‘cream’ and look hideous.

Icecream bombs, covered in a layer of dark chocolate. DF who was a pharmacist christened them Elephants Pessaries. Proudly went to school and when asked what I had for dinner the day before told my teacher. How she kept a straight face don’t know.

YoThePussy · 26/05/2019 07:32

weird not wired!

Dhalandchips · 26/05/2019 07:37

A chocolate eclair from the baker at the end of the road. I had to have been REALLY good! Can't stand them now!

ImpracticalCape · 26/05/2019 07:40

Miniature variety packs of cereal

Lwmommy · 26/05/2019 07:47

Sara Lee double chocolate gateaux. For every high day and holiday

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 26/05/2019 07:50

Cocoa Pops. The best bit was watching the milk turn purple.
The thing with our childhood was that DF was a dentist, so fizzy drinks were completely forbidden. Buying my first Coke at 16 was a rush.
