Oh god . They’d been vaccinated? With the mmr? How awful hope he and his mates feel better soon

OddBoots · 20/05/2019 18:17

DS has a few of friends at uni with it, two vaccinated and one not. There seems to be a lot of it around. I think it is a notifiable disease.

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/05/2019 18:19

Mumps is shit. Was really poorly with it. Hope the vaccine means he does not have it as bad.

dementedpixie · 20/05/2019 18:27

2 doses gives about 88% protection against mumps but there are concerns about the protection waning over time. Maybe in the future there will be another dose added in for older age groupd

SunshineCake · 20/05/2019 18:39

Where in the country are you? My son couldn't have the MMR and hasn't had the mumps vaccine.

EleanorLavish · 20/05/2019 18:43

I'm in NI and there have been quite a few cases of it in my older kids school this year. There are a few at the min too, I know as the school nurse lets me know as I have a son who is immuno-compromised.
Worrying. Hope your chap is better soon.

LoveRoyalBlood · 20/05/2019 18:51

We are in the SE .
1 is currently overseas & his symptoms only came out when he was away & can’t (obviously) fly home

If the number of people getting the vaccination stays over a certain % then the illness can't spread. If the vaccination rate drops below that % then the illness can spread, and then even individuals who have been vaccinated are at risk.

SunshineCake · 20/05/2019 18:57

We are in the SE and the same child has just failed a hearing test. .

dementedpixie · 20/05/2019 19:02

I think the issue is that the mumps component isn't as effective as the others. My db didn't get mmr and ended up deaf in 1 ear from mumps as a young adult

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/05/2019 19:04

There's been recent outbreaks at Nottingham and Cardiff universities according to BBC.

vjg13 · 20/05/2019 19:05

My (50 year old) husband had it about a month ago. Confirmed by GP, we live in the NW.

RomanyQueen1 · 20/05/2019 19:06

looks like we need to be vacinated as teens now, in addition to babies and toddlers.
it is a notifiable disease and it can make a man sterile.

AllTheProsecco · 20/05/2019 19:07

Outbreak at Liverpool uni before Christmas as well.

MsTSwift · 20/05/2019 19:10

Did he bank sperm the cycle before mumps affected him? Dh caught it randomly in his mid twenties and despite feeling like death banked a sample at a private clinic. Bless him he was single at the time. The evidence it didn’t affect him in that regard is currently sitting next to me on the sofa but gave him peace of mind as can cause make unfertility in minority of cases.

megletthesecond · 20/05/2019 19:12

Crikey.
I wonder if boosters are available for teens?

TheAssemblywomen · 20/05/2019 19:14

This is all very worrying.

mumwon · 20/05/2019 19:18

there was an oubreak of something on an USA naval ship recently but they believe it wasn't actually mumps (!) but another virus which looks similar ---

Inniu · 20/05/2019 19:19

Do you get an MMR booster at 12/13 years in the UK?

QuilliamCakespeare · 20/05/2019 19:19

I had it at uni. It was bloody awful. I looked like the elephant man and could barely swallow. Massive sympathy to your DS.

QuilliamCakespeare · 20/05/2019 19:20

I also had the full compliment of MMR jabs Confused

MayFayner · 20/05/2019 19:20

There was an outbreak recently in a school here in Dublin amongst the 6th Years (17/18yos).

I think it spread amongst the boarders and then into the day pupils. These students are in the same year (different school) as my DD and I remember a huge amount of anti-MMR misinformation going around at the time she was vaccinated (2002). I wonder if some of them weren’t vaccinated as a result. DD seems to think that lots of people didn’t receive the booster shot at 5 years.

This is what happens when people refuse to vaccinate 🤷‍♀️ we lose our herd immunity hopefully everyone comes out unscathed

slipperywhensparticus · 20/05/2019 19:25

Breastmilk are you on fucking glue? if vaccines caused the disease a hell of a lot more people would be sick
