All have been vaccinated.

They were all at the same party 2 weeks ago .
He’s really poorly with it 😢

If you haven't done so already, please let the uni know. It's important they know students have it as mine has a protocol for these situations. I don't know it in detail but it will help protect others.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 20/05/2019 19:48

perhapsiwill flower76 exactly.

LoveB · 20/05/2019 19:48

*breastmilk I did attempt to do my own research before having my DD vaccinated, but it was incredibly difficult to find information that didn't have ridiculously strong (and aggressive) points of view from both sides. I couldn't find anything sensible. Same could be said for Brexit in a lot of ways tbh! There are far too many people who don't know everything, who think they do, saying too much.

Chewbecca · 20/05/2019 19:48

We (older people) didn’t have the vaccine but did have the disease so should be immune that way and not need to stay away from babies.

titchy · 20/05/2019 19:48

Most people are sleeping quite soundly when it comes to doing their own research unfortunately.

Unless you're an immunologist I can assure you your research is bollocks.

If vaccines didn't work there'd be a fuck of a lot more cases of mumps. Ten thousand times as many.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 20/05/2019 19:48

huggybear16 definitely vaccinated then?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/05/2019 19:50

Mumps was something you had as a little kid though not a teen. Is the vaccine just deferring it?

I am old and had the lot as a kid: measles, mums, rubella plus regular tonsillitis and chest infections. I remember mumps as being the worst.

CruellaFeinberg · 20/05/2019 19:50

@TheBreastmilksOnMe yes dear of course they do (fucking hell - and your proof, oh of course you don't have any)

Huggybear16 · 20/05/2019 19:51

Yes @TheBreastmilksOnMe - I love my son, so he is vaccinated against diseases that can have devastating consequences.

SuperSara · 20/05/2019 19:51

Tinfoil hatted fuckwits are exactly why these outbreaks are happening.

Yes, vaccines aren't always completely effective but we're protected by herd immunity.

Reading conspiracy theories and then spouting it as fact to the gullible leads to fewer immunisations and an increase in mumps and other diseases.

Aridane · 20/05/2019 19:52

I don't agree, hanar - idiocy should be left to stand so we are aware of the idiocy that can lead to spreading of these diseases among even the vaccinated population

MaverickSnoopy · 20/05/2019 19:52

Mumps is probably the worst thing I ever had. I had it about 10 years ago when I was in my early 20's and also had had the MMR. I caught it from a friend down the pub - we'd had the same drinks so I must've accidently drunk some of his or vice versa. He was fine when I saw him but then ended up with the mumps before I did.

I vividly remember spending most of my time sleeping and struggling to keep my eyes open and oh my god the pain. I had it on one side and it got better and then the other side came up! It was awful and I was ill with it for about a month - I was temping at the time and they didn't renew my contract.

Lots of sleep, painkillers and good food/water is needed. I hope he feels better soon.

AnnaComnena · 20/05/2019 19:52

“VACCINES DO NOT WORK AND CAUSE THE VERY DISEASES THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO PREVENT”

Of course. That's why people in the UK are still dying of smallpox, diphtheria and polio.

And by the way most older people have none of these vaccines, why don't you all keep your kids away from them??

Most of us had the diseases instead, so will have (mostly acquired immunity that way.

slipperywhensparticus · 20/05/2019 19:53

I was vaccinated and I caught mumps from a group of unvaccinated children I fortunately had a milder dose I still remember it being horrible my elder sister tried her hardest and didn't catch it off me

MaverickSnoopy · 20/05/2019 19:53

Oh and the doctor wanted to see me to confirm it but I had to be quarantined when I went and sit in a separate area. Getting there was excruciating.

concernedforthefuture · 20/05/2019 19:53

@perhapsiwill Yes, but when 'everyone' used to get mumps, most did so when they were children. Mumps-related orchitis (inflamed testes) rarely affects pre-pubescent boys.

underneaththeash · 20/05/2019 19:57

@ TheBreastmilksOnMe You clearly don't understand how vaccinations work. In some individuals, the immune system fails either to produce antibodies or insufficient memory to recognise the antigens.

No vaccination will ever be 100% effective as everyone's immune system reacts differently. That's why boosters are given.

If you're interested this article is fairly readable.

MarieToulouseBerlioz · 20/05/2019 19:58

I had mumps while sitting my a level exams, and I had the mmr jab as a kid.

It was so painful, I just remember fainting in the morning and was so ill.

It's really horrible, please make sure he keeps himself in isolation.

As above I think it's a notifiable disease so hell need to let his doctor know

MiniMum97 · 20/05/2019 19:58

People waffling in about anti vaxxers causing this are just as ignorant as the anti vaxxers! Not all vaccines are 100% effective and for lots of the vaccines the effect wears off over time. There are also lots of older unvaccinated people about from when the mumps vaccine was not available - those that had the disease will be immune (because that immunity does not wear off) and those that didn't will be susceptible to the disease. You have no evidence at all that these outbreaks are due to anti vaxxers so get back in your box.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/05/2019 19:59

Actually, thinking about it, chicken pox as an adult was pretty horrendous too; felt like all my nerve endings were on fire.

DD had scarlet fever last summer just before her finals. I don’t think I’ve seen her more poorly than that.

MacrosomicMumma · 20/05/2019 20:02

It sucks. Universities/ festivals etc
are now a hotbed of this stuff. We didn't need top ups before because we
had a good level of herd immunity and the vast majority of people understood the need for vaccinations and vaccinated. Now we have the internet and it's created a bunch of fools who don't understand vaccines the levels or those vaccinated have dropped, the herd immunity is low and now we'll need to start thinking about boosters.

Hope he's got all his other vaccines and top ups that universities are now having to recommend to deal with the absolute health shit show anti-vaxers are creating.

dementedpixie · 20/05/2019 20:03

Anti vaxxers will not help as unvaccinated children will keep the mumps circulating in the population which leads to the 12% of the unprotected mmr vaccinated children coming in contact with it. If everyone had the vaccine fewer cases would occur to spread it round

There's actually quite a lot of evidence that links the outbreaks to the rise of the anti-vaxx movement. Maybe look into that before suggesting the more informed amongst us "get back in our boxes"

Karwomannghia · 20/05/2019 20:06

On holiday recently dd’s neck began to swell slightly on one side. The dr said it was mumps but it went back down a bit later. Can that ever happen?? She’s 12 and was vaccinated at the usual times.
