Has anybody bothered to join 'Nextdoor.co.uk'?

I got an invite through the door. It looks like some kind of local neighbourhood 'share news' thing. Tbh I can't be bothered with the sign-up process. I was told to verify my email & when I did, it then wanted to verify me by phone or post too! I only wanted to have a look & see if it was worthwhile. I can't be arsed with all the hassle upfront. Anyone else know if it's worth it?

OP posts:
Haggisfish · 10/05/2019 20:22

Yes I did and I like it.

ShesABelter · 10/05/2019 20:22

Yup been on it since last year and it's really good.

mrsed1987 · 10/05/2019 20:23

Yeah im on it and quite like it

ShesABelter · 10/05/2019 20:24

People post about lost dogs or cats, about recommendations for tradesmen, about bogus callers or break ins, local events. Today for instance our town had no water so one person posted what Scottish water said on the phone and updated it so it saved lots of people calling.

IndianaMoleWoman · 10/05/2019 20:24

Do you enjoy watching people’s CCTV footage of burglars trying doors? Do you want to know every time anyone is walking around your area with their hood up? Do you want to read people’s requests for plumbers/hairdressers/window cleaners? Then it’s for you!

tenbob · 10/05/2019 20:28

I joined it about 3 year ago

Pluses:
Easy way to get recommendations for plumbers, cleaners, local restaurants
We’ve met neighbours we wouldn’t otherwise have met by lending drills and ladders and spotting missing cars
Reunites lost keys/teddies/cats

Minuses:
Constant posts of suspected and actual crime makes it feel like we live in a much more dangerous area than we do. It felt safe when I didn’t know about someone 10 roads away catching someone casing cars
Watching petty squabbles over paying cash in hand, brexit, cats shitting in gardens, dogs in the park - basically AIBU with addresses attached, and the % of people who look down their noses at anyone poorer than them

ImposterSyndrome101 · 10/05/2019 20:39

I have, it's been good for getting to know local info especially since we live in a student house share so we're passed over somewhat usually.

threedeepatthebar · 10/05/2019 20:42

Is it just the same as a local fb group then? For people who don’t have fb presumably?

FiremanKing · 10/05/2019 20:52

It’s very good for recommendations for local tradesmen and there are some lovely posts where someone has needed help and people have done it for free.

There’s also art appreciation meetings and craft get together’s and there is a good community spirit.

Davros · 10/05/2019 20:54

I like it. I agree with tenbob's analysis

Theknacktoflying · 10/05/2019 20:59

There should also be an option to only get a ‘digest’ version every day .... a good way/another way for those anti FB ...

It replaced (bought out) another local listings/neighbourhood interest group

Theknacktoflying · 10/05/2019 21:01

Used to be a more anonymous website called streetlife ...

WhenDoISleep · 10/05/2019 21:06

I'm on it - ours is quite actively modded, so is pretty good for recs for trades, sharing updates about community matters, notices of events etc. There are a few posts that come through that make me go Hmm - mostly when the answer is easily found via google. I get the daily rec, which keeps it managable.

exexpat · 10/05/2019 21:08

Basically agree with tenbob too.

Useful for local info and recommendations, can also be a way of selling/giving away things with fewer time wasters than Facebook/freecycle/gumtree (everyone is local and verified and are unlikely to ask you to do dodgy things like send something by courier or do a bank transfer).

When you sign up, make sure you set it so that you only get a daily digest rather than notifications of everything or you will be deluged.

ItsNotTheCatsFault · 10/05/2019 21:21

Joined recently & advertised my services (cleaner)
Received lots of replies & new clients.
I like it because it’s much more local than Facebay.
I’ve done well out of it .

LonelyTiredandLow · 10/05/2019 21:30

threedeepatthebar yup, like a more localised version of fb town residents groups.

Mixed bag as on one hand you can ask for recommendations but then you also wonder if people are just posting their husband's firm. Seen a few things for sale on there too.

Some guy posted about a cheap holiday he had found and from what I can gather ended up going skiing with 6 people he never met before!

Most eye-opening was a thread about a house in the next area which had had some kind of drug cartel using it and apparently multiple stabbings Shock. Agree with pp who said it does make you much more aware of the goings on in less safer areas of the town!

DappledThings · 10/05/2019 21:37

I joined this year. Someone asked everyone to stop talking about Brexit on the main board as there is a Leave/Remain group. Three people asked to join the Leave group. Everyone was reminded there is one group for discussion, the Leave/Remain group. 2 more people still failed to comprehend and asked to join the Leave group.

So far it's been amusing for that but not otherwise useful.

ASauvignonADay · 10/05/2019 21:41

Before I moved I was on it, but I deleted it because it was pretty dull! I've since moved to an area with a much more interesting local fb group (I love all the CCTV footage and crime stuff!) so I've re-joined but waiting to get the little postcard to verify my address.

goose1964 · 10/05/2019 21:50

I have it. It seems to be escaped horses or sheep in the main

Ivegotthree · 10/05/2019 22:04

Yes I love it

MindatWork · 10/05/2019 22:09

I’m on it and have found it useful for trades recommendations and have also bought/sold a few things.

I think the ‘invitations’ they send out in the post scare some people. I’ve had a chuckle at a couple of posts from people on a local village Facebook group who keep posting photos of the envelope warning people of the ‘scammers’ sending out letters with fake stamps on them Grin

OldAndWornOut · 10/05/2019 22:13

I was a bit worried about all the neighbourhood knowing a bit too much about each others business.
Has anyone found that?

stanski · 10/05/2019 22:14

I really like it

FredaFox · 10/05/2019 22:33

It used to be called street something I had an invite for that ages ago, joined and not much went on it do deleted it.
had the invite for next door a few weeks ago, realised its the same site as before. Mine is just a feed of the same bloke moaning about fibre optic cables for wifi 🤣 it’s very dull

FrogFairy · 11/05/2019 00:51

Yes, but my local one is a bit shit as not many on there.
