Has anybody bothered to join 'Nextdoor.co.uk'?

I got an invite through the door. It looks like some kind of local neighbourhood 'share news' thing. Tbh I can't be bothered with the sign-up process. I was told to verify my email & when I did, it then wanted to verify me by phone or post too! I only wanted to have a look & see if it was worthwhile. I can't be arsed with all the hassle upfront. Anyone else know if it's worth it?

OP posts:
PickAChew · 11/05/2019 00:55

Yeah. The sign up with the code was pretty straightforward, tbh. About 70% is quite useful and interesting. The other 30% is Doris from X village either complaining about litter or her car.

Bedforaweek · 11/05/2019 00:57

I like it
The crime stuff can make you feel anxious -
(If you’re inclined that way).
We have picked up two beautiful pieces of free furniture that people decided to give away.

LadySainsburySeal · 11/05/2019 00:59

Yeah we're on Nextdoor. I find it amusing that people will have their full address on display and post things like "currently in Spain for 3 weeks enjoy the rain, suckers" Or tick they're attending an event in the village hall and helpfully state "we'll both be there!"

Anyone wanting to find empty houses to burgle just look at nextdoor for my village.

Other than that it's dodgy characters trying car doors, lost cats, why didn't the mobile post office turn up this week...

thecatneuterer · 11/05/2019 01:54

I find it very useful for lost/found cats and, as I'm with a cat charity, I end up sorting out a lot a cat related problems that are posted about on it.

Also good for recommendations for local tradespeople and occasionally some useful local news/warnings about burglars and such. Oh and lots of stuff being given away if that interests you.

I'm totally dismayed about the general level of illiteracy on there though. I think I've been spoiled by MN's articulate and grammatical contributors.

Gingerkittykat · 11/05/2019 02:43

I had a look and it said my neighbourhood was 3 villages with about 5 miles between them.

I went to sign up and would have to create my own community and get 9 new members within a month or they would delete it.

I'll stick to Facebook gossip groups.

This is the issue I have with local groups to my city on Facebook.

mateysmum · 11/05/2019 14:02

I'm on our village Nextdoor group. It's useful for tradesmen and services recommendations/lost cats / stray sheep and cows in people's gardens.
People have also used it to ask for practical help from neighbours which has worked well.
As we are a group of small villages, many people personally know many others on the site directly or at a couple of steps removed, so I think that helps.

Picklypickles · 11/05/2019 14:09

I joined up a few months ago but live in a rural area, I've only seen a post about an escaping bunny and that's it!

Usernamealreadyexists · 11/05/2019 18:28

I like it. If you are concerned about privacy and security, make sure your address is obscured as it gets displayed. I don’t give my real name either.

Davros · 12/05/2019 16:29

Yes, you need to make sure your settings are how you want them. We get updates from the local Police which are interesting as they are realistic. I like recommendations for tradespeople etc but I report any that are promoting their own business Blush

ReddsKidds · 09/12/2019 14:37

I don't want to worry you but.....
I was concerned about Nextdoor's security so I tried to register using a fake email address in order to have a look before committing my identity. Registration was easy, but to my surprise, so was verifying a fake address. I had a good look at the people and posts in my district but decided that if I could get in so easily (contrary to what nextdoor tell you) then any scumbag can. I have closed the account. Stay safe!

SilverySurfer · 09/12/2019 15:25

I joined and think it's good for finding local recommended tradesmen, have used twice and both did a great job. Also bought a table advertised on it.

There's a current long thread about the election with both sides getting into polite but heated debate.

Happysummer2020 · 09/12/2019 20:59

I've just taken a look. It won't let you register unless you allow the app access to all of your profile info, your email and phone contacts so I didn't proceed beyond that point.

CruCru · 09/12/2019 22:09

I’m on it and like it a lot. I do only get the daily digest email though and dip in and out so it isn’t too relentless.

Pros:

Recommendations for piano teachers, plumbers, electricians.

Cons:

Endless posts about the same cat who wanders up and down my street yowling. He’s been here years, he’s just a yowling nuisance.

Some of the posts show just how weird a few of my neighbours are.

thecatneuterer · 09/12/2019 22:18

Yes. It's very useful for lost/found pets.

thecatneuterer · 09/12/2019 22:21

Registration requires either verification using a code sent by post to your home, or receiving a verification code on your landline at your home address. It's more than just an email. The old Streetlife, which Nextdoor replaced, didn't require any of that. Maybe that's what you are thinking of?

thecatneuterer · 09/12/2019 22:22

I've just seen this is a Zombie thread ...

thecatneuterer · 09/12/2019 22:40

Also there is no such thing as a "fake" email address. It can be a new one. But if you have created it and can receive the email links they send you then it's as real as any other address.

reic0002 · 03/02/2020 03:39

It can be good for local ideas, joining in, things for sale, crime etc. However, I would caution greatly. In my area there were a few vociferous political types who objected to anybody to didn't agree with them. The ones who dared to disagree with the trendy, 'woke', bleeding heart views were barred. Shame. It was a good idea. Just taken over by the 'loud'.

Juliette20 · 03/02/2020 04:07

I don't think I would. I left one local FB group when there were too many posts moaning about teenagers. We live in a generally very safe area and it makes you really aware of minor crimes and makes you feel unsafe.

reic0002 · 03/02/2020 06:04

I actually think it is a good idea. We are in a large city and it gives a 'neighbourhood feel' to the area. However, as I said it has been hijacked. I now use it for notices only. As before shame.

cortex10 · 03/02/2020 06:32

I find it useful to find local tradespeople as PPs have said - used a 'fake' name to avoid publishing my personal details though.

Els1e · 03/02/2020 06:36

Yes, I’m on it. Ours is mostly about local trade people recommendations and lost pets. Quite useful and harmless

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 03/02/2020 09:30

Mine is currently full of complaints about dog fouling (and obviously all dog owners are vicariously responsible for the actions of the irresponsible few). Not a word about the stabbing that happened around the corner a few days ago though 😂

seltaeb · 03/02/2020 09:35

It is useful but just be aware that anyone on it can see your name and address.
