I got an invite through the door. It looks like some kind of local neighbourhood 'share news' thing. Tbh I can't be bothered with the sign-up process. I was told to verify my email & when I did, it then wanted to verify me by phone or post too! I only wanted to have a look & see if it was worthwhile. I can't be arsed with all the hassle upfront. Anyone else know if it's worth it?

Yes, on one local FB group it has rather too many photos of alleged "Dog-foulers" and bad parking. I know both things are bloody annoying and frustrating but I'm not keen on public shaming like this, it feels too much like bullying, or denouncing your neighbours in Francoist Spain.

m0therofdragons · 03/02/2020 18:11

Mine was just a couple of neighbours selling homemade crap like candles. I was on it for 5 minutes then left.

CoraPirbright · 03/02/2020 18:22

Yes but its not much use eg when we had a power outage, no one posted about it so no useful info there.

Libertylee · 03/02/2020 20:15

Had a look, then didn’t like the idea of having full name and even a vague address online, so deactivated quite quickly.

CambsAlways · 26/10/2020 16:29

Yes I joined few months ago I find it good,

We have just received a letter from Nextdoor claiming to be "Allison" and from a named address in the Village personally inviting us to join the the App. Our village already have an independent WhatsApp group and the tom tom drums soon started beating. Nobody called Allison (American spelling by the American Nextdoor company) lives in the group of houses that they letter purports to have come from. Others in the village with a slightly different post code received letters from "Vikki" (again an American iteration of the name). The only Vicky in living "The Street" who fortunately is on our Whatsapp group says that she has never heard of or used "Nextdoor" and points out the incorrect spelling of her name anyway. Reading up on Nextdoor they appear to be an information gathering app. They send out mailshot claiming to be from neighbours (possibly fraudulently) and already have post codes and the associated addresses but no other information. To check what they are up to when you go into their website/App the only way forward is to create an account. To create this they ask for your email, first line of your address, telephone/mobile and verify your GPS location. Nextdoor now have all the personal information on you they require. What do they do with it?. Sell it?. You will now be inundated with junk emails, mail, texts and cold calls. Also just think further down the line as they grow. They will be snapped up by Facebook who already own WhatsApp and Instagram and recently sent out new terms and conditions that the latter two sites personal information can be "shared" with Facebook. The letter also claimed that they already had "over 800 posts" on their site for our village. This appears to be impossible as nobody on our WhatsApp group of over 100 have admitted joining Nextdoor...

@munch58

It’s a very well established international site, not some hooky data gathering spam organisation 😂😂
By all means, use your local whatsapp group but you can take off the tinfoil helmet

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/08/2021 19:13

Been on it about 3 years, it's great.

Roselilly36 · 27/08/2021 19:31

I joined recently, I find some of the stuff on there hilarious. One guy posts daily without fail, he obviously thinks he a nextdoor superstar, usually photos of plants, flowers or butterflies, one for the ladies, he says!😂 and some of the requests are for the most obscure things, can someone hem a dress for me, can anyone recommend a mole catcher? Absolutely, bizarre, DH is bored of it already, but I love it.

AnnaDyne · 27/08/2021 19:38

Yes it's hilarious. Mostly moaning posts about the LTNs and cats. One really long moaning post about my dd and her teenage friends hanging around the park which the teens all knew about. Even their teacher came on to back them up.

But also useful to get recommendations etc, have got rid of furniture on there, and my dds have found babysitting work.

munch58 · 07/09/2021 09:34

@SW1amp I have checked and the word "gullible" still does exist in the English language

mogtheexcellent · 07/09/2021 09:49

Had one of those weird letters. ignored it. We have a village sales and advertising site and a seperate village gossip site so dont need anything else.

mogtheexcellent · 07/09/2021 09:50

sorry that should be facebook pages not sites...

munch58 · 07/09/2021 14:46

SW1amp Having checked the word "gullible" still exists in the English language...

Peachee · 07/09/2021 14:47

Yeh I like it.. it’s similar to other social media platforms but without the bragging and without the bullshit!

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 07/09/2021 14:49

Yes. A lot of it’s boring but I’ve found out some quite useful stuff on it.

NobbyButtons · 07/09/2021 14:51

I joined a few years ago. It has its pros and cons.

Pros: good for sharing very local information, swapping or selling seedlings and the like, asking people to look out for your lost cat (that is about 80% of Nextdoor in my experience!), hearing about what's going on locally, discussing local issues such as improving play areas or bus services, outpouring of support during lockdown. I also found a part-time job through Nextdoor.

Cons: endless rants about pavement cycling, the occasional rude or insulting poster, lots of posts that aren't of interest. I use the daily digest otherwise I would get far too many emails.

KateTheEighth · 07/09/2021 14:53

It's a hoot

Ours has some interesting stuff but also some full on ridiculous arguments about all sorts of local stuff all aired online

BrisbaneandGone · 07/09/2021 14:56

I was on it but it's no different from our local FB group so left

Mariell · 07/09/2021 15:15

I joined but use a completely different name and it’s hilarious as to some of the crap people post about but also heartwarming when people are helping each other.

I’m also in a Facebook group that has some of the best posts from around the world from Next Door and they are hilarious, not nasty just humour in some of the weird and outrageous things people post (names hidden).

FizzyPink · 07/09/2021 15:40

I had to leave ours, the cat posts were driving me insane. And always the same busybodies moaning on every post.

Person 1 - Does anyone know anything about this cat? I keep seeing it wandering around and I’m worried it’s lost. I’m thinking of taking it to the vets.
Person 2 - Yes, we’re your neighbours and that is our cat. Cats tend to wander about. Please leave it alone.

And the other 50% of posts are people asking why there is a helicopter in the sky again. We live in London near several major hospitals with helipads, it doesn’t need a 20 comment long discussion.

Surewhynot · 07/09/2021 15:51

Be very very wary of engaging tradespeople recommended via Nextdoor.

Our local one was rife with people signing up under false details to ‘recommend’ themselves and there were a significant number of dodgy tradespeople ripping people off.

I would not take a recommendation from any social media site unless it’s from someone you personally know and you have seen the work done.

munch58 · 04/10/2021 11:21

SW1Amp, I've just checked and the word "Gullible" still exists in the English dictionary. It's that or your one of the trolls that they employ to shutdown true comments about them across social media and the likes of Trust Pilot!.

NewcastleUK2022 · 17/04/2022 11:25

Don't do it - this site is domain managed by a rapid development web company - this means it could have been created by anyone (professional companies don't use these types of services). Don't give your personal information out and be wary of sites that ask for any personal details you think are not required.

RoyalGoat · 17/04/2022 11:33

Ours is:

20% lost/found pets

20% doorcam footage of dodgy looking individuals

20% complaining about fireworks

20% wheely bin gripes

10% bad poetry

10% people selling shit craft
