I assume they have been fortunate enough to never have been on the breadline.

Money makes things so so much more easier. Yes everyone has problems but if you have money you can throw money at it at least. Granted not everything can be helped with money but alot can.

I was told this today by someone and it just really pisses me off!

You can't buy happiness pisses me off. I can assure you I've purchased loads of it, especially in the form of good food, exotic holidays and having someone else do my eyebrows. Back in the 80s, when cannabis was safe, that didn't come for free either.

PurpleDaisies · 24/04/2019 23:31

I was told this today by someone and it just really pisses me off!

In what context?

I think sometimes other things are more important than money, as pong as you’ve got enough to get by. Definitely in terms of jobs.

gluteustothemaximus · 24/04/2019 23:32

Money isn't everything. But it's right up there with oxygen Grin

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/04/2019 23:32

Generally one is happier with a full stomach than hungry.

While money doesn't necessarily buy happiness, lack of money can make you miserable.

MissLadyM · 24/04/2019 23:34

I'd rather be miserable rich than miserable poor! Money is everything! It protects you and gives you choice

Prequelle · 24/04/2019 23:34

It's very annoying. Money can't buy happiness is even worse considering the main worries people have in life are financial.

Yes it's not going to prevent tragedy and strife from hitting you (look at the people effected by the Sri lankan attack) but it will make the majority of people's problems go away.

dreichuplands · 24/04/2019 23:35

A lack of money makes life very hard.

But the billionaire who lost three dc to the bombings in Sri Lanka must be very aware of how useless his money was in that circumstance.

nancy75 · 24/04/2019 23:37

The billionaire owner of ASOS lost 3 of his 4 children in the recent terror attack, I’m pretty sure he would whole heartedly confirm that money isn’t everything.

Prequelle · 24/04/2019 23:38

Think is about that, poor people get hit with tragedy just as much don't they. Life is going to punch you straight into the chops regardless so may as well have money to make things nice beforehand and to help you sort out the mess of your life afterwards

For example it is an awful, awful thing to know you can't afford to bury your loved one properly

mooncuplanding · 24/04/2019 23:39

Money can remove misery

Money can't necessarily create happiness

researchandbiscuitfan · 24/04/2019 23:40

My DH died. It breaks my heart. But there are people in my position who are also struggling to feed their children. So much worse for them 😔

squee123 · 24/04/2019 23:41

I was reflecting on this recently. I friend was suggesting I might prefer a less stressful job. In many ways I would, but then I think one set of stress would be replaced by another. Whilst my job is very high pressured and takes a toll, equally I don't have any money worries. If something breaks I fix it or get a new one, if I want something I buy it. If I had a less stressful job which paid less presumably the job stress would be replaced by money stress, so I'd be the same amount of stressed overall, probably more. So yes, I think money can buy you happiness.

dinkydolphin · 24/04/2019 23:41

@disgrace Cannabis is still safe lol

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 24/04/2019 23:45

Money can't buy you happiness...but it can certainly be used to buy things that make you happy.

Flower777 · 24/04/2019 23:49

Money is fucking awesome.

I would definitely be happier with zero money worries and knowing that whatever happened we could fix it.

Plus, amazing holidays etc.

And yes tragedy etc but even if tragedy strikes it will have less overall impact on the rich. In terms of having a more secure job so being able to take time off to grieve at your own pace and not worry about losing your job.

It has knock on implications all over the place.

Kpo58 · 24/04/2019 23:50

While money may not bring you happiness, it does bring food, security, better education, employment opportunities and a much better chance at justice through the legal system.

Drogosnextwife · 24/04/2019 23:53

Aw thank god I'm not the only one who feels like this. My DP is always telling me money doesn't matter ( usually when he has spent a fortune in the bookies) but money really does make things better and when we are making decent money (still far from rich, both self employed) I am much happier.

Monkeyssplit · 25/04/2019 00:01

I don't think money can buy happiness though it can buy health which is worth so much. I also think that money isn't everything. I have deliberately chosen to have considerably less money in order to have more time, less stress and more enjoyment. I feel I have almost bought more time, less stress and more enjoyment. As long as you have enough money for the thinks you feel you need then more money becomes less important than time with love ones etc. It becomes only money. Of course, if you haven't enough then money is very important.

What do people do with a surplus of money? Mostly they buy stuff (pointless) or they use it for pleasure (holidays, experiences, fine dining). If collating the money uses all your time then you are no longer able to use it for much pleasure anyway so you are left with buying stuff that you rarely get a chance to use because you are working so much. In cases like this it is helpful to realise that it is only money and question how you are spending your one and only life.

RainbowMum11 · 25/04/2019 00:10

Money does matter, for all the reasons above.
However I think the point is more about the balance of career & material possessions over time spent with people.
I really think that's what a lot of people mean.
My recent breakdown has put things so much more in perspective in terms of the priority that work takes over time with my family, as long as I can cover the bills etc.

MooBaaLaLaLa · 25/04/2019 00:12

At least the billionaire can concentrate on his grief and mourn his horrific loss without the added stress of how to pay for funeral costs.
It doesn't make it ok in any sense but money still can help to some extent.

Flower777 · 25/04/2019 00:19

Exactly. And the billionaire can access the best grief counselling, can buy ready made healthy meals, have a cleaner.

Doesn’t make it ok but I’d still rather be in that position.

dreichuplands · 25/04/2019 00:37

The quote was money isn't everything
It isn't, it may help a great deal but it isn't everything. There are things that matter more.

racking · 25/04/2019 00:46

If I made a list of all my problems / issues in my life almost every single one can be either eliminated completely or massively reduced if I threw money at it. My biggest problems in my life would completely be gone if I had money. And I'm not even talking millionaire type money.

I've had this conversation with dh and he usually is a very positive person who always sees the good in crap situations but even he has agreed that most of our problems in our life can be massively eliminated by money.

frasersmummy · 25/04/2019 00:47

I came on here to say money is not important. I was widowed with a 12 year old and no amount of money can make our life happy again
But missladym's post really struck a chord with me.. Money gives you choices. Hubby left us provided for.. We are not rich but we have spare at the end ofeach month. When it all gets too much i can say let's go buy chocolate cake, or let's go for a drive, or lets go to the zoo.
I cant imagine how hard this would be if i couldn't make those choices to get us out.
So yes money does give you choices which can make your life better even for a few hours

racking · 25/04/2019 00:49

dreichuplands money isn't everything/ doesn't buy you happiness - I meant all of those type of phrases.
