Which dogs smell the most?

LittleLongDog · 14/04/2019 18:19

I was reading the ‘how to tell if your house smells bad’ thread and the smell of dogs in the house has been mentioned repeatedly. However, lots of owners are saying ‘but not my particular breed of dog^.

Do certain dogs smell more than others? If they were all washed regularly would any breeds still be a bit whiffy?

Disclaimer: I have a dachshund and he definitely has a specific smell. I actually find it quite comforting.

IMO Labs and cocker spaniels smell the most doggy.

Moogletea · 14/04/2019 18:22

Basset hounds

DramaAlpaca · 14/04/2019 18:23

The two smelliest dogs I've encountered have been a basset hound and a labrador. The basset hound absolutely reeked.

I have springers and I don't find them particularly smelly unless they've rolled in fox poo but other people might think differently.

Wet dogs!

starzig · 14/04/2019 18:23

I think it is like smoking. Different breeds may smell different but if you are not a dog owner they all smell (bad). Dog owners are deluded if they think theirs doesn't. They are just used to it.

CMOTDibbler · 14/04/2019 18:23

I was going to say bassets!

JurassicGirl · 14/04/2019 18:24

Labradors smell although we don't smell it in the house anymore but friends notice - I'm not too bothered personally but then I love my dogs Grin

Soubriquet · 14/04/2019 18:26

I always find labs and yorkies smell.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 14/04/2019 18:27

Yes they all smell. Fair enough if you don't mind.

Palominoo · 14/04/2019 18:27

The worst smelling breed I’ve encountered and I’ve met a lot is the beautiful St Bernard. Honks like fish factory on the hottest day of the year.

summerson · 14/04/2019 18:28

Spaniels and yes yorkies!!

Awks · 14/04/2019 18:29

I love my spaniel but yes, he reeks.

PristineCondition · 14/04/2019 18:30

My mates got a pug thats the smelliest bastard!

Palominoo · 14/04/2019 18:32

This is one of mine. He’s very short haired and single coated and a bit of a baldy underneath. He has very low odour and his breath is fine too.

Breeds with waterproof/greasy coats tend to smell more e. g. Labs, spaniels.
Dogs with floppy ears more likely to have ear infections/yeasty ears.
Dogs with skin folds e.g. Bulldogs, Sharpei, often have skin fold infections and reek.
Individual factors like manky teeth, and what they eat also contribute.

AlletrixLeStrange · 14/04/2019 18:36

My labs stink. Always. Not their breaths though. They get washed regularly but firstly their coats don't lend themselves well to a good scrub and secondly the minute they go into the fields the next day they stink again. No where near as bad as our collie x Alsatian did when I was a child though!

BarkandCheese · 14/04/2019 18:38

I was going to say greasy dogs and dogs with skin folds smell worst. I have a Pomeranian, she’s very low odour, she has a fluffy not greasy coat, long muzzle with no folds and pricked up ears. She still has dog breath though Grin .

weaselwords · 14/04/2019 18:42

My Weimaraners pong. Especially their breath.

shitpark · 14/04/2019 18:42

I've always had GSD and they don't smell bad. Moult like bug grey though

GregoryPeckingDuck · 14/04/2019 18:43

The dirty ones! Honestly, all animals have a distinct pong that comes with them.

toastfiend · 14/04/2019 18:45

I think Labs smell and they always leave a funny, waxy kind of feeling on my hands when I've patted them.

We've got a German Wirehaired Pointer and a German Shorthaired Pointer. The Wire definitely smells more than the Shorthair.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 14/04/2019 18:45

My short haired terrier cross genuinely doesn't smell unless he's rolled in something awful. I've previously had a a prospective lodger come and view and comment, with a note of surprise, that the flat didn't smell of dog. I make no special effort to remove odours and should probably vacuum more often than I do.

Labs do tend to be relatively smelly I find.

EnidButton · 14/04/2019 18:51

If the Mumnetter with the Lucas Terrier reads this, I'd like to know if they smell less than most? I read that they don't have the typically doggy smell.

Whippets are supposed to be non-whiffy too. Farting aside.

gettingtherequickly · 14/04/2019 18:53

I used to have long haired collies, very whiffs dogs.
Greyhounds do not smell doggy (but their farts can and do clear rooms).
