Housewarming gift price range?

NoCanoe · 13/04/2019 17:10

I originally offered to buy a gift once my friends were settled and knew what they wanted. There had been talk of wanting to replace dinner plates, bed linen , towels etc.

They now have said they will forgo the non essential items in favour of something more practical.

That's fine. But because I never stipulated a budget at the time when it was a general idea, Im now being presented with an invoice far greater than anticipated.

Im just wondering if Im out of touch with price range these days, or am I being taken advantage of?

Id like some idea of what you'd consider normal price range before I say how much I am actually being asked for.

I do feel I have no option but to honour the commitment. But I'm a bit miffed.

I'm really glad you posted and mumsnet has given you confidence to stand up to these people.

But never dip into your rainy day fund for anybody other than yourself.

Good update lass!

Well done.

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 15/04/2019 20:15

Op you are so nice. After all their rubbish you still sent a polite, but firm (well done!!) message.

You can be my friend, I’ll never let you buy a drink (cause they’ll all be on me)!

mummmy2017 · 15/04/2019 20:19

Angelinthenightx · 15/04/2019 20:22

Well done u did the right thing, your a lovely lady ,stick with your friends that give a friendship for free not those who expect so much.
Ive had a friend who used me to get things took me a good few years to see what she Was doing, its not nice but its their loss.
I hope u feel better now & take care ,your worth a whole lot more than they are.

Banhaha · 15/04/2019 20:23

Horray! Well done. You have inspired me to be strong and say no to things I think are cheeky rather than keep the peace.

Oh well done you. That is a fantastic result OP and contrary to what other people have being saying I think you have just proven how strong and brave you can be. That takes real guts to pull that off. Forget about your so called friends. They don't deserve you Flowers Wine

loobylou10 · 15/04/2019 21:23

Well done OP we are all very proud of you!

Bluntness100 · 15/04/2019 21:35

Good for you op. It's good to stand up to people who want to take advantage of you. Go get yourself a treat,

Did they respond?

butterboo · 15/04/2019 21:43

@NoCanoe you already sound happier, the weight off your shoulders has gone! Stay strong and don't be coerced, curtains are NOT essential items (particularly made to measure) so there is no need to feel guilty for your decision.

SimplyPut · 15/04/2019 21:59

Good for you @NoCanoe. I hope you get a good nights sleep 💤

GinZing · 15/04/2019 22:07

Hooray well done 👍

BonnesVacances · 15/04/2019 22:18

Great result, money-wise. I wouldn't worry about the curtains (though I'm sure you're not). I doubt there were any anyway and it was just a ruse to get £550. I'm sorry you're now having to mourn a friendship that never was though.

dreichuplands · 15/04/2019 22:25

Well done OP! Grin
