Do you have your own side of the bed?

It seems people are shocked that couples change sides of the bed. Do you? I have my side of the bed in my home, but sleep on the opposite side at DPs. I'd never thought of it before reading this article!

I assumed everyone had a 'side'

PrettyAmazingGrace · 25/03/2019 22:46

You're talking about different beds (in different houses) but that man and his wife swap randomly. That's all kinds of wrong. Grin

Surely no one actually does that? (sits and waits for MN to blow my mind on yet another.topic...)

PhannyMcNee · 25/03/2019 22:47

I sleep nearer the window, dh nearer the door. Mainly because he gets up to wee in the night and I get too hot so have the window open - very practical Grin and left/right are irrelevant!

legolimb · 25/03/2019 22:47

I have my side. DH has his.

I don't think I'd be able to sleep on the wrong side Grin

QueenAnneBoleyn · 25/03/2019 22:48

No swapping sides here.
I have my two thirds of the mattress.
He has his third. Grin

We were watching TV the other night and my DH got very annoyed because the couple were in bed 'the wrong way round' (ie opposite to the way we sleep). We will occasionally swap sides in a hotel because sometimes I make him sleep closest to the door so he will get murdered before me but generally we're consistent. We'd never swap sides at home - all my crap is on my side of the bed!

Tunnockswafer · 25/03/2019 22:49

We do, and I hate it. So I’m always on the same side even when we move house and I have a longer walk than him every single time.
Actually I’m going to tell him we need to swap.

Meet0nTheledge · 25/03/2019 22:49

We stick to the same sides wherever we are, regardless of doors, windows or whatever.

PhannyMcNee · 25/03/2019 22:49

I’m pondering this a bit more - I do sometime sleep on dh’s side but only when he’s away and I want a cold bit of bed and I take my pillow with me

RomanticFatigue · 25/03/2019 22:52

After years as a sex writer I didn’t think I could be shocked by what people get up to in bed. I was wrong. Grin

I'd honestly never thought about it before. Now I feel a bit strange that I "swap sides" at DPs. When I've moved house before I always sleep on the side that's nearest the door. At DPs I'm on the other side. I may never sleep there again.

When I was younger (ALOT younger) I always thought men and woman have the same sides I.e all men sleep on the left and all women sleep on the right.

As I got older I realised that it wasn't part of marriage vows (not to mention that it's not only married couples who share a bed, nor is it just one man and one woman).Grin

Littleraindrop15 · 25/03/2019 22:53

We sleep on whichever side sometimes left sometimes right. Don't really feel it makes much difference

C0untDucku1a · 25/03/2019 22:54

Im going to go to bed now, before Dh, and get on dh’s side and freak him out. Mwah ha ha ha

Cushellekoala · 25/03/2019 22:55

I read that its a cave man thing that the man sleeps nearest the door for protection. DH sleeps nearest the door and our sides of the bed (and own pillows) arecompletely non negotiable...

RomanticFatigue · 25/03/2019 22:55

In your own home?

Sillybilly1234 · 25/03/2019 22:58

@Cushellekoala subconsciously we have done that. I think that you are dead right.

Honeyroar · 25/03/2019 22:58

Oh god yes! My husband has been in hospital for 5 weeks and I've still not ventured over to his side!

IncrediblySadToo · 25/03/2019 22:59

I have my side, irrespective of who else gets into it. If I slept on the ‘wrong’ side, I’d probably fall out 🤣

IncrediblySadToo · 25/03/2019 23:01

If I travel with my friend and share a room I always have to sleep nearest the door, but that’s ok because we have separate beds so I won’t fall out. Clearly she thinks it’s best I get murdered first 🤣

curious541 · 25/03/2019 23:02

I always sleep on the right, when we first starting dating the left side of my bed was pushed to the wall and I was the one needing the loo in the night so I just slept on the right for an easy exit - 10yrs later it's just kinda stuck

Defo need an update c0unt..

2018SoFarSoGreat · 25/03/2019 23:02

QueenAnne I think you sound really selfish. Don't you have a cat that needs at least of half of DH's third? :)

I have thought about testing out DH's side of the bed (right side of the bed, wherever we may be) - what if it is actually much comfier on the right? I'm going to try it one of these nights. I'm heavy. Once asleep he won't be able to move me.

RomanticFatigue · 25/03/2019 23:04

Oh god I'd forgotten about that! When exH had an injury years ago we had to swap sides as he was having trouble moving, and I fell out of the bed! I felt about 5 years old Grin

I'm a bit of a commitment phobe and need to sleep near the door - not sure if that's a coincidence or if I literally need a clear escape route even in my own home! Weirdly though I'm also a bit clingy (only on my own terms) and when DP gets out of bed to go to work I immediately roll into his space. He's not here tonight and I'm edging onto his side as I think it makes me feel closer to him or something.

Yes, I'm a nightmare partner but I insist it says more about him (that he puts up with my oddness) than it does about me Grin

DrGradusAdParnassum · 25/03/2019 23:08

@Cushellekoala, I think you are on to something. At home, I sleep alone, and away from the door. At DP's house, I do likewise (so he is next to the door). I will put this caveman theory to him tomorrow. Grin
