Do you have your own side of the bed?

It seems people are shocked that couples change sides of the bed. Do you? I have my side of the bed in my home, but sleep on the opposite side at DPs. I'd never thought of it before reading this article!

When I was married my DH and I switched sides of the bed regularly. I'm not sure why, he thought it was a cute quirk of mine.

Theoldwoman · 26/03/2019 01:11

Yep, always the same. Even when we go away.

ladyme · 26/03/2019 01:24

We always sleep on the same
Side at home and I've never thought about it before but I do always end up nearest out DC, even though she's now secondary school age, if we're away. I think I like to know if something happened I could mumma bear.

My husband works away a fair bit with work and I never veer to his side when he's away.

Reddragonqueen · 26/03/2019 05:12

I sleep on the right dh on the left. We've been together 10yrs and he still gets at me for "stealing his side of the bed"

When we each lived with our parents we both slept on the right but when I stayed over at his I made him sleep on the left near the window as his mums house was freezing and that's the way it's been since.

He sleeps like a log on the left but any chance he gets (me away or in dd's bed) he'll move over

MrsJonesAndMe · 26/03/2019 06:04

I'm closest to the door which leads from tending to children at night I think.

allthingsred · 26/03/2019 06:10

We have & it annoys me.
His side is more comfortable, he has better view of tv, & it's me that has to get up 1st to deal with kids through the night (my side nearest door)
The worst is when he comes home pissed & wakes me up to move over back to my side.

Justabadwife · 26/03/2019 06:12

I sleep closer to the door at home and when ever we go away. DH once told me it was because if anyone broke in they'd come upstairs see my asleep face and run away. 😂🙄
I had to sleep on his side of the bed a few weeks ago as dd got into bed with me when she wasn't well. (DH had to sleep in her bed) it was all kinds of wrong, his pillows are wrong, the beds uncomfortable, the duvet wasn't right. Next time dd can sleep that side.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 26/03/2019 06:25

I thought having sides was just a thing every one did.

I know my parents did. Interestingly though even though yes my dad slept nearest the door, and i think even then i think i knew it was in case buglers came so he could protect my step mum. My mum also slept nearest the door so that if one of us children woke up she could get out without disturping my step dad

StarlightLady · 26/03/2019 06:28

I usually sleep on the side nearest to my bits and bobs in my bedside drawers, there are some bed essentials in there. But if a friend is sleeping with me who is “bed side phobic”, I will move over to the other side.

I travel a lot with work and in hotels I tend to pick the side with the largest bedside space and “set up camp there”.

bulbmoment · 26/03/2019 06:36

Before I had my DD, my partners (desperate not multiple at once!Grin) would always sleep on the side that was close to the door. It was protective in case there was a break-in/crazy person etc. I’ve always been quite a wimp but I’ve toughened up. Now I have DD I sleep on the door side, even if I’m in a different house without her. It’s a weird system but works for me!

bulbmoment · 26/03/2019 06:36

Separate* not desperate, autocorrect is my enemy today!😂

mustdrinkwaternotwine · 26/03/2019 06:44

DH and I have sides but they have varied over the years. When he moved in, I claimed a side (nearest the door) as that had the bigger bedside table; when we rented a place together, we stuck to those sides only to swap a few months later when I was pregnant and getting out of bed 60,000 times a night to go to the loo; when we bought a place, we stuck to those sides. I was only thinking the other day that it might be a good idea to swap as the DC (now 6 & 9) always come to me in the night but I think it is just that I am closest rather than because they want me so, by swapping, DH could deal with the rare nighttime issues that crop up.
In hotels, we always agree which side we will sleep on. It is usually dictated by where the TV is.

anniehm · 26/03/2019 06:45

I sleep by the door (habit from when we had babies) so if we stay elsewhere I sleep nearest the door even if it means switching !

mustdrinkwaternotwine · 26/03/2019 06:48

We have both a kitchen table & a dining table but only eat together as a family probably twice a week, once at each, so don't have set places. I do worry the DC might have some deep seated issues later in life from not having a set place at the table.

PH03b3 · 26/03/2019 06:49

Even in hotels we end up on the same side as we do at home.

PandaCat · 26/03/2019 06:50

Yes I have a side, and I've stayed on this side for the last 10 years. Even when he's not here I'm on the same side

BlueEyedPersephone · 26/03/2019 06:54

Yes I always end up closer to door or window in any bed, so different side dependant on room layout. So at home same but different in hotels etc

EndUser · 26/03/2019 06:59

I prefer sleeping on the left hand side of the bed, but currently sleeping on the right because it's nearest the door and I am the one who gets out I the night. I know I'd stub my toe in the dark if I had to walk all the way round the bed so it works for me, lesser evil and all that!

When I moved the bed on the other bedroom wall it got swapped around so I could have easy access. When on holiday we have the same arrangement (me closest to exit) so that varies, but which ever way round we are that week is stuck to all week.

Biscuitsforbrekkie · 26/03/2019 07:00

At home I always have the right side but whenever we go away my DH wants me to swap to the left for "holiday configuration" 🙄
I always have a worse night's sleep that way round as the cool and hot sides are the other way round, iyswim, but it seems to mean a lot to him so I just go with it...

burritofan · 26/03/2019 07:12

I'm left, DP is right, in our bed and hotels etc. But the only place for a co-sleeping crib is right so we're currently practicing the new configuration and I haaaaate it. As soon as he gets up for work I scurry over back to my side, which is just better.

EggysMom · 26/03/2019 07:19

I sleep on the right, which is by the window; DH sleeps on the left, closer to the door. But it's not through any 'caveman' protection behaviour. Five years ago, different house, different bedroom - I still slept on the right closer to the door, with DH on the left, by the window. We didn't change sides at all.

We've talked about this, and for us both it relates to childhood. My single bed was pushed one way up against the wall, so I'd climb out to the right. DH's single bed was the other way round, he'd climb out to the left. So in the double we naturally chose our 'sides' on the basis of habit for climbing out of bed.

SamStephens · 26/03/2019 07:21

I have my side, but every so often when my husband goes to work, if I’ve had a shit nights sleep suddenly I can sleep like a baby on his side for the next hour or two before I have to get up. It’s weird lol

moonwalks · 26/03/2019 07:24

I like sleeping at her back and she knows how the position goes, I can't afford to sleep at the wrong side, lol

Megan2018 · 26/03/2019 07:27

We generally don’t share a bed, but when we do there are definitely sides-the beds have different mattress tensions on each side and different pillows!

Both of our beds are superking zip and link. I like a much firmer mattress than DH.
I just wouldn’t sleep on his side, it is all kinds of wrong!
