‘Don’t think Easter dinner is a thing here’

Of course it is, and has been for as long as I’ve been alive! We’re Christians, so that’s probably a rather large reason why it is a tradition in our family, but I don’t think we’re alone (you just have to look at any of the April edition magazines to see roast lamb recipes and Easter lunch pudding ideas).

I don’t want to turn Easter into a commercial holiday, but I do think I should be celebrating it with the kids far more than I currently do. I want them to understand that ‘Christ is risen’ is a much bigger deal than Christ’s birth. We decorate eggs, and have a sprig of willow or similar in the house, but I think some Easter bunting might be nice too. I’ll try to make some.

(Off to google Easter grass)

IF you "celebrate" Easter, it surely shouldn't be until after the end of Lent.

But don't be sucked in by the great hod of commercialism OP. Save your money.

I have a pot of twigs which I decorate with little wooden eggs and also put up some homemade Easter egg bunting in the window, they are in a box in the loft with plastic eggs and little buckets for the Easter egg hunt, we get it all out a few days before Easter weekend.

FabulouslyFab · 24/03/2019 09:16

Our school doesn’t break up for Easter this year. School finishes on the 29th March and they go back on the 15th April, Good Friday is the 19th April.

I like a bit if easter decoration myself and I'm an atheist. But I like chicks 🐣🐥and bunnies 🐰.
I used to live in Germany and the little tree decorated with eggs looked lovely.
I have easter bunting and a few ornaments and crap the kids have made over the years.
Im going to do a tree this year.

Jesus Christ on a bike
No, just no

Cocolepew · 24/03/2019 09:19

I also see it as the start of spring. I'm one of those people who change curtains and cushions etc to different ones for spring/summer.

Cocolepew · 24/03/2019 09:20

Where do you get the Jesus Christ on a bike decorations? That sound right up my street.

God MN can be a pit of doom at times, what is wrong with bringing a bit of joy, and heaven forbid, fun into our lives?

We always have a big family celebration at Easter, less a religious occasion, more to mark the end of the dreaded winter and celebrate spring.

I bring in some branches from the garden and hang all the decorated eggs that the children have painted over the years. Lots of daffodils and tulips around the house and I we have hot cross buns and Easter eggs for breakfast on Sunday.

We always go for a big roast lunch at MILs with all the cousins. She usually decorates the table with daffodils and little chicks and bunnies collected over the years. After lunch all the parents hide sweets and little chocolate eggs around the garden and then all the children are given a little wicker basket to collect the sweeties they find. They all love it.

We have been doing this since the oldest grandchildren were babies, they are soon to be 21, luckily there are still toddlers in the family to share the fun with.

I think it's a lovely event, in my mind it marks the end of dark days and coming out of hibernation ( I hate winter!).

TapasForTwo · 24/03/2019 09:24

I love Easter. It is so much nice than Christmas. The clocks have changed, the days are getting longer and spring is on its way.

Palominoo · 24/03/2019 09:25

Cocolepew, you could probably dress up a Ken doll and pose him on Barbie's bicycle.

Someone asked for a link to the Sinister Easter bonnet thread : www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/937597-Sinister-Easter-bonnet the photo is no longer on the OP's account but is included in a later post in the thread. It still makes me laugh.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 24/03/2019 09:29

This German family has really inspired me - I now plan to surprise the neighbours with something similar:

When do you put your Easter decks up ?

If in doubt, amazon has it. I'm gutted because its out if stock (and in America) but that would actually have been a fucking amazing present for DM for mothers day. She is a vicar.

When do you put your Easter decks up ?

JenniferJareau · 24/03/2019 09:49

LOL. I have to get one of those. Impressive Grin

averylongtimeago · 24/03/2019 09:52

Easter decorations - no.
The only thing I remember is the palm cross from Palm Sunday being displayed until Easter.
Churches are not decorated "for Easter" until Easter Sunday.
So, on Easter Day yes to spring flowers and Easter eggs and a good dinner but fill the house with plastic tat for weeks???
Absolutely not.

fauxhuman · 24/03/2019 09:55

Easter decorations can fuck off along with baby showers, Halloween decorations other than a pumpkin, Black Friday, baby gender reveal parties and any other nonsense

averylongtimeago · 24/03/2019 09:56

Oh and I do celebrate Easter, I don't go to church as often as I should but do a special meal and treasure hunt for the DGCs with Easter eggs - just not in Lent or on Good Friday

Summergarden · 24/03/2019 10:13

Thank you so much for the link to the Easter bonnet thread- I almost asphyxiated myself laughing at the. Pic and comments on there!

OP- we decorate our house for different seasons just because I enjoy doing so. I put up Spring decorations a few days ago, including an Easter tree with little eggs and other wooden decorations, a wreath with spring flowers etc. It’s brightens up the house. I’m not particularly religious.

TildaKauskumholm · 24/03/2019 10:26

I remember the Easter Bonnet thing at school - I'm old! Regarding bunnies, eggs etc, as PPs have said, nowt to do with Jesus but pagan symbols appropriated by the church, as with Christmas trees, lights etc.
