Easter Sunday is like a stress free Xmas day. Big family meal, swap eggs, Easter egg hunt but never decs

Quertymcquerty · 24/03/2019 08:09

hasn’t traditionally been a thing in Britain! A few rather rude previous posters who don’t seem very aware of other cultures op

Rather rude? Very rude and desperate to knock others down in the process.

Put them up when you like, John Lewis is full of them so someone is buying decorations.

TapasForTwo · 24/03/2019 08:10

My mum used to make Easter special for us with an Easter egg hunt and a small gift (usually a pair of socks or similar), but decorating for Easter was not a "thing". I don't know anyone who does this.

letsgomaths · 24/03/2019 08:12

Can anyone link to the Easter bonnet thread? It sounds fascinating. Easter Shock

Here's an idea to decide if Easter decorations are worth it. Everyone in our house enjoys hiding the eggs as much as finding them, so we have a game: some of us hide the eggs, while everyone else is blindfolded; then the blindfolds come off and the hunting begins. But I think I'll bring in a rule that you're only allowed to see if you can correctly answer a question about the decorations! Easter Grin If too many people fail this task, we won't have the decs next year.

MWNA · 24/03/2019 08:19

I don't even know when Easter is.
Daft bint. (I leave it up to you to decide if I mean me or the OP).

Ploppymoodypants · 24/03/2019 08:19

OP, your Easter and decorations sound lovely. I don’t believe in God, but my mum and a few other family members do. Regardless of your faith it’s a nice opportunity to have the family together and some fun. And making Easter decorations with the children is a fun and easy craft thing to do, on a rainy day in the Easter holidays, so I have definitely done that before.

It is quite possible to respect the Christian faith and eat chocolate over the Easter period. I hope you have a nice time lizard

Soontobe60 · 24/03/2019 08:24

We tend not to decorate the house in memory of a man who was crucified, but each to their own. 🤣🤣🤣

^this!

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 24/03/2019 08:25

Suppose I could put a pile of stones in front of the door to block us in

This is my favourite comment ever Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/03/2019 08:26

I've never decorated for Easter either.

PH03b3 · 24/03/2019 08:26

Ive noticed recently a trend of a massive pile of presents for kids on Easter Sunday morning not just chocolate!

HarrySnotter · 24/03/2019 08:34

Gosh, the spirit of bleak Dickensian Britain with its dark satanic mills and cabbage for breakfast truely is alive and well on this thread.

Yes, not putting up Easter decorations points to this exactly ...

You spelt Christmas wrong 😅
Seriously though, is Easter decs a thing now?

ArmchairTraveller · 24/03/2019 08:41

I decorate for spring/Ostara/Easter and have done for 40 years.
From the Equinox to Easter Monday. Nothing bought ready-made.
It’s a celebration of new life, spring returning and beginnings.
We plant and cook and think about the year ahead after coping with the winter.
We also have an Easter tree with eggs.

JenniferJareau · 24/03/2019 08:41

Can't put any up as the cat will destroy them 😂

TheFirstOHN · 24/03/2019 08:43

I am a Christian and I celebrate Easter. In the Christian calendar it is seen as being at least as important as Christmas, if not more.

If you do want to put up decorations, it would be fitting to wait until Easter morning. During Holy Week the symbolism is about suffering and then darkness. After Holy Saturday night, the symbolism turns to life, light and renewal.

ArmchairTraveller · 24/03/2019 08:44

So, nothing up at Christmas either then, JJ?
Our cats tend to stick to drinking out of the tree pot and pinching the occasional bauble.

Babdoc · 24/03/2019 08:49

OP, you’ve really got the wrong end of the stick here.
The whole of Lent (the six weeks up to Easter) is a time of fasting, reflection and purification.
We take any existing “decorations” (flowers, candles) OUT of the church on Good Friday and have the altar bare and sombre as we mourn Christ’s death.
We only decorate with flowers, eggs etc for the Easter Sunday morning service, when we celebrate Christ risen from the tomb.
It’s the biggest celebration and most important day in the Christian calendar, far more important than Christmas.
It would be illogical and crass to have celebratory “decorations” for the torture and death of our loving, self sacrificing God - we only celebrate his resurrection and triumph over death.

AmIAWeed · 24/03/2019 08:51

I do make sure I've pots planted up and looking pretty but that's far more about celebrating spring than Easter.
Easter will be spent with an egg and beer hunt

Ilovemypantry · 24/03/2019 08:51

Do they do it in America? If so, I’m sure we will follow suit very soon.

SileneOliveira · 24/03/2019 08:51

It's not a "thing" in my house. And it never, ever will be.

Ilovemypantry · 24/03/2019 09:01

Babdoc
Please forgive me as I am not religious and do not know important details about the bible, but I am a bit confused by your last sentence,
“the torture and death of our loving, self sacrificing God”. Wasn’t Jesus the son of God?

JenniferJareau · 24/03/2019 09:01

So, nothing up at Christmas either then, JJ?

I did put a tree up this year but he likes to chew wires so I had to keep an eye on it. He also liked playing with the greenery that fell off (artificial tree). I love him to bits but he is daft as a brush Grin

LBOCS2 · 24/03/2019 09:04

Decorating for Easter would probably be a bit inappropriate.

Decorating for the celebration of Ostara, however, which marks the turning of the seasons, the renewal of life as spring starts, of new beginnings and growth... fill your boots, IMO.

There has always been an appropriation of festivals; chicks, blossom and baby bunnies don't actually scream representation of the crucifixion of the son of God - and yet have also been part of the season for centuries.

SileneOliveira · 24/03/2019 09:05

Have just searched the #easterdecorations hashtag on Instagram.

Dear God.
