Bloody Sunday prosecution

Only one man will be prosecuted for murdering civilians at the Bloody Sunday civil rights march.

The long-delayed inquiry found that all the killings were unjustified, that every adult and child who was killed had been unarmed, and that no warnings were gven before soldiers opened fire.

British justice at it's finest, eh?

You raise the history of Ireland and of the English being there - given that we can't change the past what do you think should be done now?

My use of the words England and English were in direct response to you using them. England and Britain being used interchangeably is beyond offensive and as a Scot, irritates me beyond belief.

The fact is that the British government, and many on this thread along with many in daily life dismiss Ireland and NI, don't see the problem and just expect Irish people to do as they're told.

From my perspective, as someone who doesn't consider themselves British, it is the British attitude which needs to change.

It is Britain who caused it, it is Britain who continues it and it is Britain which needs to change its attitude.

Recognition of that would be a start.

My Dad is an ex British soldier who served in NI with the infantry. He is from a NI Catholic Family also who moved to the U.K. when he was a child. As an ex soldier myself I was very pro the troops in general and to be quite honest I never really understood what happened until I watched a recent documentary which reconstructed the events. It was horrifying, absolutely devastating and completely reversed how I had thought previously. As an ex soldier I know the pressure to obey and the aggressive training that creates that mindset. I believe that the senior officers who gave the order and the government ministers are the ones who should be held accountable with no holds barred.

A lot of British people simply don't know the history but spout nonsense about "supporting our boys" and the like. I think Britian needs to take a leaf out of Germany's book and face up to its history, good and bad, and stop cherrypicking the bits that get taught in school.

The current approach has led to large numbers of the British population (and establishment) having a major superiority complex. It has manifested itself with this Brexit nonsense - the rest of the world is shaking it's head in disbelief.

Of course there are well informed Brits too, some of whom are on this thread, but it seems they make an effort to seek out accurate information. People who can't be bothered doing that just believe what they hear.

CarolDanvers You're not the only one - I've met plenty of ex-servicemen in England who were absolutely clueless about NI and devastating impact the British Army had on the Catholic population.

This! Absolutely this. I couldn't find the words to explain it but superiority complex has it nailed.

Sakura my GF was from Northern Ireland and was Catholic.

Someone said Catholic’s don’t refer to themselves as Roman Catholic. Well i know plenty that do, including myself.

Think the twitter link I've just posted says it all.
Guilty guilty guilty. As a Brit, I'm sorry.

Ford was the name of the CO I couldn't remember. 1Para were known as his personal attack dogs.

That fucking call is absolutely.chilling.

Stone cold proof right there.

They lied and they're still lying.

mineallmine · 17/03/2019 18:40

How must the families of those killed that dreadful day feel when they hear that? The callous disregard for human (civilian) life. Shocking seems like such a trite word.

I'm absolutely anti violence and anti paramilitaries but I can understand how people got involved.

Have a look at 'The Ballymurphy Massacre', if anything can be as bad as Bloody Sunday this is, for the people of Ballymurphy there were no film cameras so a priest waving a white hankie and trying to aid an injured man didn't have the 'protection' of TV cameras.

The inquest is happening now - here's a link to an Irish newspaper, Mainland UK papers seem to be silent on the matter.
