What do you think about Nespresso machines?

AliceDMumsnet · 13/03/2019 15:08

Hello everyone,

We have just made a page about the most-recommended coffee machines on Mumsnet - that is, the machines that MNers seem to rate the most. It contains ‘affiliate links’ to products that MNers rate highly, meaning we get a small commission if someone clicks through and buys something after viewing the page.

Lots of Mumsnetters recommend Nespresso coffee machines. Nestle is one of the companies Mumsnet doesn’t carry advertising from as part of the Nestle Boycott so we do feel a bit conflicted about their inclusion in Mumsnet content. The page is based on recommendations from the Talk boards so it feels disingenuous to omit a frequently-recommended product.

So we thought we’d ask you what you think about it:

www.mumsnet.com/swearsby/best-coffee-machines

Many thanks in advance for your input.

Had mine for years, love it, order online and coffee ids delivered next day.

Palominoo · 13/03/2019 15:13

I wouldn't buy anything that Clooney endorses or advertises.

PanamaPattie · 13/03/2019 15:16

I bought mine at Christmas. I’ve used it everyday. It makes delicious coffee. I would recommend it to anyone.

catdogcatdog · 13/03/2019 15:18

I love the coffee but the plastic wastage is huge! Even if you send the pods back- I'm not sure how reliable this is. Do they just wash & reuse or recycle? I'd imagine the energy into recycling would be huge too.

Taffeta · 13/03/2019 15:21

Atrocious for both the environment and the wallet

I always think they are for latte drinkers that don't really like coffee

I have a stove top Bialetti, a small coffee bean grinder and a Bodum milk frother - cost a grand total of under £50 for all three.

I buy whole beans for £4 a bag and keep them in the freezer.

Way, way cheaper, better for the planet and doesn't take up loads of space on work surface.

StrawberryPig · 13/03/2019 15:22

I agree with the Nestle boycott and I also think that capsule machines are horrific for the environment. I have a bean to cup machine and I buy the beans in bulk to cut down on packaging.

Taffeta · 13/03/2019 15:25

Yeah sorry I've not really answered the question.

I see your disclaimer re Nestle on the page.

I'd remove it tbh. It's the best form of advertising for them and goes against everything MN stands for.

BaronessBomburst · 13/03/2019 16:43

I hate them.
Plastic waste and Nestlé in one.
Why would MN endorse them?

Taffeta · 13/03/2019 17:05

Maybe you could acknowledge on the page that some posters recommend Nespresso but because of the Nestle boycott you won't link or endorse their products.

AnagramBixter · 13/03/2019 18:11

Black
Latte
Espresso
And more
All delicious coffee from my Nespresso machine

All pods recycled too!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 13/03/2019 19:07

I love the coffee but the plastic wastage is huge!

Plastic waste and Nestlé in one.

I honestly understand the Nestle boycott but why claim “plastic waste” when the Nespresso pods are made fully and infinitely recyclable aluminium?

I love my machine, it is compact, quick and makes the different coffees that DH and I enjoy. Our used capsules are taken to the Nespresso boutique for recycling.

StarlightLady · 13/03/2019 19:44

I love mine! The Nespresso capsules are not plastic either. But there are Nespresso compatable capsules made by other companies which are plastic.

Grumpbum123 · 13/03/2019 19:45

Not hot enough so it lives I the cupboard

CakeInMyFace · 13/03/2019 19:47

I have a Tassimo machine rather than Nespresso and love it. Although I do feel terrible about the waste. However I'm the only coffee drinker in the house and I really the variety of coffees I can get.

CakeInMyFace · 13/03/2019 19:48

That should say love the variety of coffee I can get!

TapasForTwo · 13/03/2019 19:50

Plastic waste = a no from me

hugoagogo · 13/03/2019 19:54

I support the nestle boycott and that obviously that includes Nespresso.
Cold brew or moka pot works for me.

goingtotown · 13/03/2019 20:54

The genuine Nespresso pods are NOT plastic. Nespresso provide bags for the recycling of the pods, they are collected with the delivery.
I’ve had my machine for twelve years, it’s used for six cups everyday. I love it.

StarlightLady · 13/03/2019 21:11

Not hot enough? Quality coffee should not be boiked. Are you following the instructions and pre heating the cup with a shot of hot water?

Etino · 13/03/2019 21:15

I broke my 15 year Nestlé boycott after staying with friends with a Nespresso machine. Blush
There’s no plastic waste. It’s all recyclable aluminium and they collect the pods.

elasticfantastic · 13/03/2019 21:21

I've had mine for about 6 years and after initially using it a lot, I now prefer to use a Café tiered . The cups are too small and the coffee isn't hot enough. Also after about 3 years it started pouring really slowly, we bought the cleaner kits bit not really made any difference. Glad I got the one with the separate milk frother as still do love being able to use that with other drinks!

beanaseireann · 13/03/2019 23:55

Tiny amount of coffee.
I'm disappointed and the pods are wasteful.

PickAChew · 14/03/2019 00:00

I think they're wasteful.

Filter coffee isn't exactly difficult and at least the filters can be composted.

TightPants · 14/03/2019 00:05

So much waste!

Just because something can go into a recycling bag doesn’t mean it will be recycled Hmm

PresidentHump · 14/03/2019 00:08

Nestle product. Their coffee is not fair trade. Wasteful.

Having said that I bought one before realising the former two and use someone else's pods. I should get rid
