What do you think about Nespresso machines?

AliceDMumsnet · 13/03/2019 15:08

Hello everyone,

We have just made a page about the most-recommended coffee machines on Mumsnet - that is, the machines that MNers seem to rate the most. It contains ‘affiliate links’ to products that MNers rate highly, meaning we get a small commission if someone clicks through and buys something after viewing the page.

Lots of Mumsnetters recommend Nespresso coffee machines. Nestle is one of the companies Mumsnet doesn’t carry advertising from as part of the Nestle Boycott so we do feel a bit conflicted about their inclusion in Mumsnet content. The page is based on recommendations from the Talk boards so it feels disingenuous to omit a frequently-recommended product.

So we thought we’d ask you what you think about it:

www.mumsnet.com/swearsby/best-coffee-machines

Many thanks in advance for your input.

Do you all boycott

Air France
Amazon
Ben and Jerry's
BP just to name a few ?

QueenArseClangers · 14/03/2019 21:52

What Byrytrain so eloquently says.

They could produce coffee that tastes of angels’ tears and the intangible delight of a summer’s day and I still wouldn’t buy it.

Nestle kill babies and use child labour/indentured labour in developing countries. They’re twats and I love Mumsnet for the fact that they’ve adhered to the Nestle boycott.

Please don’t spoil it now MN.

QueenArseClangers · 14/03/2019 21:53

Flobochon do you understand what the Nestle boycott is about?

Flobochin · 14/03/2019 21:56

Yes I do.

hinely · 14/03/2019 22:14

Most Nespresso users don't recycle the aluminium pods as it's too much hassle. And I'd be surprised if the plastic pods sold by Lidl and so on are recyclable.

Get a bean to cup machine like the delonghi - much cheaper in the long run and far more environmentally friendly (you can recycle used beans as food waste in many areas).

QueenArseClangers · 14/03/2019 22:34

Ok Flob, why do you think Ben and Jerry’s are on a par with Nestle in their behaviour in developing nations (ie responsible for the deliberate deaths of infants due to unsafe feeding practices and pushing of artificial milk?)

Bayleyf · 14/03/2019 22:36

The original reasons for the boycott don't seem relevant any more, but I hate the waste that Nespresso machines cause.

Flobochin · 15/03/2019 06:51

If you don't know then please do use Google.

My answer to you were examples
Of companies we should all avoid if you feel that strongly. Not just Nestle.

HoneyDragon · 15/03/2019 07:01

I have a Nespresso machine, manufactured by De’Longhi. I use capsules produced by other companies a to Nescafé/Nestle that are recyclable or compostable.

Whilst I agree with Mumsnets stance on choosing not to advertise products manufactured by companies that don’t fit with their ethos I think stopping recommendations through the chat aspect a step to far. Mumsnets ethos has changed through the years too. As a manufacturer I have expressed to people that supply my products that I no longer wish them to pay MN as a platform to advertise in the past due to stances MN has taken that I think are wrong. That’s just capitalism and free choice at play. MN is a business and can do the same. Equally on chat boards I’ve seen complete misinformation about products I make ....particularly where they are manufactured. I don’t comment, it just makes me smile and I move on.

SoupDragon · 15/03/2019 07:07

do you understand what the Nestle boycott is about?
Yes I do.

You didn't 20 minutes before then.

MsTSwift · 15/03/2019 07:07

Please buy pods from cofico they entirely biodegrade. The nespresso ones terrible for the environment

Flobochin · 15/03/2019 08:32

@HoneyDragon good post

Flobochin · 15/03/2019 08:34

@MsTSwift a lot of people think the pods are plastic

They are aluminium which is infinitely recyclable.

essex42 · 15/03/2019 13:13

I adore coffee and have had a Nespresso machine since 2006. I changed from a more complicated machine. It is just me who is a coffee "snob". the DH drinks any old instant. We also have a cafetiere and a couple of stove tops but the Nespresso coffee is my favourite. Lots of choice. No waste and the empty pods are sent back for re-cycling in the (free) post or back to the shop.

SoupDragon · 15/03/2019 13:20

Turn your rubbish into useful new things. Your NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® pods will be used to make new items like garden seating, plastic boards used in fences, plastic decking and even composting crates.

Not all pods are aluminium.

Backseatonthebus · 15/03/2019 13:31

I dont think you should include Nespresso machines. My colleagues in children's services (NHS) all boycott Nestle indvidually, and ensure that their products are never at any events they run. Am completely in agreement with this stance and I also boycott.

From a recycling p.o.v. all recycling uses valuable and not necessarily renewable energy. I cant get my head round why people would use something so very wasteful when there are alternatives which dont generate waste/need recycling, and taste so much better. It's madness.

Champagnebrain · 15/03/2019 13:36

Come on @AliceDMumsnet what about the plastic wastage? Can you ask Nestle?

I'd never consider it.

HoneyDragon · 15/03/2019 14:18

Can’t you just donate the affiliate link commission to a charity if Mumsnet corporate feel they are compromising themselves?

IslaMann · 15/03/2019 14:19

Nestle are a disgusting company. I would be very disappointed if MN endorsed the machine.

AliceDMumsnet · 15/03/2019 17:16

Thank you all for taking the time to share your thoughts on Nespresso machines and the Nestle Boycott.

We have decided to remove the Nespresso machine from the page with a note explaining our position.

@SoupDragon I don't know about other brands, but this thread is about nespresso and they are aluminium.

showgirl · 15/03/2019 17:46

I have one. It's not hot enough.

Flobochin · 15/03/2019 18:26

@TheClitterati
well as you asked I think Nespresso coffee machines are utter utter cunts.

The biggest food company in the world creates a new added value product that creates waste with every single drink = billions and billions of pods. And every 2nd arsehole idiot thinks its a brilliant idea.

Nespresso is fucking evil - i am really bloody cross about products like this - reckless and irresponsible selfish product with total disregard to the environment. A triumph of neo liberalism over every other consideration. Cunts.

(Don't bother coming on here to tell me the pods are recyclable - a tiny fraction get recycled. I know every MNer with a Nespresoo knits their own reusable pods, but every single actual pod I've seen goes into the bin.)

I'm amazed this post is still here, that MN condones this language especially the c word.

Jackyjill6 · 15/03/2019 18:47

Not as offensive as promoting Nestle

Flobochin · 15/03/2019 20:31

@Jackyjill6

Language like that is very offensive.
