How many pillows do you sleep on?

I've discovered that I need to sleep with just one pillow, having always been a two pillow kind of girl.

I saw a neurologist a couple of years ago because I have weird cervical migraines and his best advice was sleep with one pillow which I ignored because obviously I know better Wink. Turns out that highly educated doctor was right and little old me was wrong!

But I'm interested to know how many pillows everyone else sleep on and also what kind of pillow-I have a sturdy latex pillow and a softer pillow and I think I prefer the sturdy pillow.

Also if you have more pillows on your bed than you sleep on, what do you do with the spares while you sleep?

{most exciting thread I've ever started}

anniehm and anyone else suffering from terrible heartburn - you need to do something to control this as left untreated it can damage your oesphageous and cause even worse problems

Yep, 40mg of omeprazole a day here because I ignored it.

EggysMom · 16/03/2019 10:03

I sleep with 2 feather pillows but I have tight shoulders and seemto have developed something akin to tennis elbow - maybe I need to reduce to one pillow? I'll try it for a few days.

gamer if you're sleeping upright I'm guessing the omeprazole isn't cutting it ?

Well it was working quite well but along with the diet. I could lie down properly eventually without any symptoms. Then I got gallstones so tried the low fat along with the acid reflux friendly diet for me and ended up with mouth ulcers, tiredness and hair falling out. So it's a case of choosing between the 2 evils so I don't end with scurvy Grin

I admit, I'm sick of my life.

I've ordered the extra thick wedge from eBay, the truth is in the pudding. It hasnt arrived yet.

I used to sleep on a really thin, like 1” deep pillow. As I was a front sleeper.
Had terrible headaches and went to my amazing physio, who runs a headache clinic. She said it’s usually due to pillows.
So I now have a really thick special pillow that they do. It was so uncomfortable at first, but now I can’t sleep without it.
And headaches are gone!

BishooWishoo · 16/03/2019 20:43

One very very flat one.

GetRid · 16/03/2019 21:29

Surely number/thickness of pillows depends on how wide your shoulders are (assuming you spend at least some of the night on your side).

I have narrow shoulders and a big head, so I only need one flattish pillow for my spine to be aligned correctly. But someone with wide shoulders and a smaller head would probably need two.

I start the night by sleeping on my front, with my face pressed right in on one side. I'm sure this is why I have wrinkles!

Going to read this whole thread because I’m getting awful neck ache which I think is linked to pillow.

When I was younger always had two pillows. Then about 5 years ago started with neck pain and I really helped but problem has returned. Think I might need to invest in better pillow.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 17/03/2019 10:10

I think I've been conditioned over the years into the whole 'well dressed bed' vibe without thinking too closely about what I need for optimum sleep. Piles of plump pillows equate to luxury but not necessarily sleeping comfort Confused

@PlatinumBrunette I've had a good think and slept the last two nights on different pillows. Both nights I had a really good night's sleep and no shoulder or neck pain in the morning, so it's hard to choose which suits best. Neither pillow has had an odour from new.

One of the problems I have is getting too hot in the night and with the feather pillows I wake, turn the pillow offer, nod off and repeat. I didn't do that with either the bamboo or the wool one.

I can't remember how much I paid for my bamboo pillow or what make it is. I'm in the UK but there's quite a bit of info Here I like it, it feels very good quality and holds its shape in a firm way but is still squidgy enough to be soft yet supportive. It feels like it'll last.

I think this is the wool one, although I paid £19.99 from Homesense
Link for more info It might be a tiny bit flatter and more obviously a natural material when you squidge between your fingers, but essentially a very similar experience. I'm wondering if this one will be preferable in the hot weather but that's about all I can identify as different.

It's so hard to put into words really so I hope some of that might be useful. Either way I slept better than with two pillows and better than on the feather or microfibre ones. The worst pillow I ever had was from S & S and was one meant to feel like down, it lost its structure very quickly and was really floppy, very disappointing.

What I want now is the perfect pillow but in a 3' width.

I wake up with a bad head and sore neck if I sleep on more than 1 pillow!

emeraldsparrow · 18/03/2019 04:46

Used to have my own "pillow castle" for all sorts of sleeping positions (back position, side position etc), ended up with one, but universal (this one from Luxuredown).

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 18/03/2019 05:23

I am a stomach sleeper, so one thin soft one. (Occasionally a shaped memory foam one) I currently have 4 pillows on my side of the bed and often alternate, depending on how I sleep, but never ever more than 1.

EmrysAtticus · 18/03/2019 06:01

One really thin one. If I am staying somewhere with a thick pillow I just chuck it on the floor and sleep with no pillow otherwise I wake up with neck ache.

FrostedSnowdrops · 18/03/2019 06:27

I've just swapped a single memory foam for two pillows, one form one soft. I'm sleeping better than I have in years!

borntobequiet · 18/03/2019 20:41

One at the moment. If my back or neck play up, I discard the pillow and sleep without, usually on my side, alternating left/right. This has sorted problems for the last 30+ years.

pink412 · 18/03/2019 20:48

Zero,

I was confined to my bed for 12 weeks unable to move all I could do is lay flat looking at the ceiling so got used to none. - this is another post for another day

PlatinumBrunette · 19/03/2019 08:03

@StarJumpsandaHalf Thank you so much for the detailed information! That’s all really helpful.

I’ve woken with a bad neck again after a crappy night sleep, so I’m going to bite the bullet and order something new. Can’t get out anywhere to try just yet, so I’ll have to rely on online. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
