How many pillows do you sleep on?

I've discovered that I need to sleep with just one pillow, having always been a two pillow kind of girl.

I saw a neurologist a couple of years ago because I have weird cervical migraines and his best advice was sleep with one pillow which I ignored because obviously I know better Wink. Turns out that highly educated doctor was right and little old me was wrong!

But I'm interested to know how many pillows everyone else sleep on and also what kind of pillow-I have a sturdy latex pillow and a softer pillow and I think I prefer the sturdy pillow.

Also if you have more pillows on your bed than you sleep on, what do you do with the spares while you sleep?

{most exciting thread I've ever started}

I sleep propped into a sitting position until my wedge gets here. Such is life. I'll never experience one pillow again.

Don't take it for granted Grin

Two firm memory foam - one thin, one thick. I have been having problems with a stiff neck/shoulder though (I sleep on my side) so will try one tonight.

Snog, I tried one of those 8 pillows. Hated it.

Boodlesnuts · 13/03/2019 21:16

1,2 or 3 depending on the time of the night. I start on my tummy with one very thin pillow, then at some point my lower back starts to ache and I flip down a pillow that propped against the headboard and sleep on my side using 2 and then sometimes if I get uncomfortable again I grab another from the floor for between my knees. A hangover habit from pregnancy.

That makes it sound like I have a really unsettled night, but I don't think I do. I'm not really waking up properly to add pillows.

Yes, I too have gone from two to one in recent years. I have a memory foam one but sometimes I think it has amnesia as it’s not that comfy anymore.

EEELA · 13/03/2019 21:23

I sleep with a V pillow when DP isn't there, 2 at DP's and 1 or 2 depending on my mood when DP is in my bed. I bloody love my V pillow and don't know what I will do when DP and I love together full time later on this year. Might have to buy a bigger bed.

justforthis6473 · 13/03/2019 21:39

I used to sleep with two or three but after horrific neck ache and migraines I now sleep with one (sometimes I found sleeping below the pillow totally flat!) and have been fine ever since fingers crossed

Girlinstripedpyjamas · 13/03/2019 21:54

Anyone got a link to latex pillow? I’ve got 3 - when reading and 2 to sleep on with one between knees and one to cuddle. Husband hates it

Wendywoo1000 · 13/03/2019 22:41

I can never find a comfy one. Ive spent £££ looking for one. But i might have hit the nail! I have one soft but not very thick on the bittom. Then 2 cheap ones in once case which is half way between thin and thick. Difficult to explain but so far, i like my odd way. Plus I often sleep with one between my knees as i have an issue eith my lower back/hip.

I always take my own pillows with me on holiday too.

PinkBuffalo · 13/03/2019 22:44

Just the one pillow for me, but it has to be very flat. Can't have a plumped up pillow!

buckeejit · 13/03/2019 22:54

I have these-they're amazing, great with soak & sleep pillow protectors, however they did smell of roast beef for a day or 2!!

The dunlopillo latex are slightly more expensive but apparently not as good as they used to be. Sure what is?!

LittleCandle · 13/03/2019 23:05

I have 2; an ancient Dunlopillow on the bottom and a memory foam one on top. The top one has a ski slope shape because I never remember to bash it into shape, and when I bought a new one, I found it too high. However, just one on its own is too low, as when I lie flat, I have issues swallowing after a while. I invariably find hotel pillows far too soft and often resort to putting towels underneath to firm them up.

SoupDragon · 13/03/2019 23:08

None if I'm on my back, one or none if on my side. I find it far better for my back and neck.

Backseatonthebus · 14/03/2019 09:21

DonPablo It's all such trial and error isn't it. A physio lent me a Sissel to see if it helped, which was great as I could try before shelling out. They make lots of different ones (have bought several!) but the memory foam one (Soft Plus) is softer, has a pad you can add or take away for height adjustment and I find it more comfortable than others. This shape works best for me as the neck supporting bump has a cut away section so your bottom shoulder sits under that. Other pillows - have the bump, but not that cutaway profile. It does take some getting used to, as it stretches your neck very slightly overnight, but I love it. Hopefully you can find something which will help Flowers

SapphireSeptember · 14/03/2019 13:54

Four, and they're all mine! Grin

Moanymoaner123 · 14/03/2019 13:56

I have two very squishy down pillows to sleep on, but they flatten to be equal to one normal pillow so I don't get back/neck pain.

multivac · 14/03/2019 14:00

None here. So much more comfortable. Our boys didn't have pillows at all until they were 12, at which point they demanded them. They still only have one thin one each, though.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/03/2019 14:24

I’m a nightmare where pillows are concerned, god help DH if he swaps mine and his when making the bed. I have a soft pillow sort of propped up against the headboard but with the bottom bit on the bed and a lumpy flat pillow on top of it. Can’t sleep any other way. I’m a freak I know. Going away on holiday is a nightmare Grin

Ellabella989 · 14/03/2019 14:26

I sleep with two thin ones. I used to sleep with 2-3 thick ones and kept getting neck pain and headaches

PlatinumBrunette · 14/03/2019 14:38

Oh, my people! Please help me!!

I am on a never-ending, and totally unsuccessful mission to find The Perfect Pillow setup. I've currently got a cheap Ikea 'orthopaedic' pillow, topped off with a dreadful creation that pancakes halfway through the night and kills my neck/shoulders/elbows and any chance of a good night's sleep.

I am:
A side sleeper with broad shoulders. The ortho pillow isn't high enough on its own.
Hopefully coming out of 4 years of frozen shoulders - both of them. Lovely.
Menopause = can't do latex or memory foam. OMG, hideous.
Broke, meaning I daren't spend £85 on a pillow that may or may not work for me. Again.

Is there anything out there for me?

buckeejit · 15/03/2019 09:01

I@PlatinumBrunette have you tried latex? It's not at all like memory foam & doesnot have that awful sweaty feel if that's what you're concerned about. Try the high profile healthbeds one, it's great. There are some talalay latex ones on ebay with decent feedback that are cheaper but I haven't tried them. If there's a dreams or bed store near you, you should be able to try out a latex.

peridito · 15/03/2019 09:15

waves to**@gamerchick** -just the 2 of us on here sleeping propped up in sitting position?

let me know how you get on with the wedge ,I've tried several but revert to masses of pillows built like a nest with a half log roll thingy behind my neck/head .

what do you support your head with ? how do you stop yourself from slipping down during the night ?

StarlightLady · 15/03/2019 10:37

Always 2. I like soft ones. I spend a lot of time travelling for work and I swear some hotels fill pillow cases up with cement. Grin It feels like that anyway.

PlatinumBrunette · 15/03/2019 15:13

Thank you @buckeejit I'll take a look now. I wrongly assumed latex would be far worse than memory foam.

amusedbush · 15/03/2019 15:39

I've always had two medium pillows but around Christmas time I had weeks of awful shoulder pain, halfway between the joint and the bottom of my neck. I switched to a single John Lewis extra firm pillow and the pain disappeared in a night.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 15/03/2019 15:58

I have 4. Two thinnish down ones that I plump daily and sometimes nightly. One bouncy foam one, and one medium sized down one. I go between sleeping on a thin one over the medium, and two thin ones. The bouncy one goes in the gap between the bed and my bedside cabinet. The remaining goes next to me on the bed, filling in any remaining gap. I cuddle that one, but the rest of my arm - I assume the grow in the night because there appears to be lots of it - goes on the bouncy one. Hate bits flailing in the night.

DCat often sleeps on my cuddly pillow, which is lovely. Until I do my tsunami move and throw all the covers off and dash the pillows to the floor. Then we start again.
