How many pillows do you sleep on?

I've discovered that I need to sleep with just one pillow, having always been a two pillow kind of girl.

I saw a neurologist a couple of years ago because I have weird cervical migraines and his best advice was sleep with one pillow which I ignored because obviously I know better Wink. Turns out that highly educated doctor was right and little old me was wrong!

But I'm interested to know how many pillows everyone else sleep on and also what kind of pillow-I have a sturdy latex pillow and a softer pillow and I think I prefer the sturdy pillow.

Also if you have more pillows on your bed than you sleep on, what do you do with the spares while you sleep?

{most exciting thread I've ever started}

Yes! One latex pillow! And I also have weird migraines (vestibular) and think some of my issues may be cervical. When I go on holiday and have to sleep with a different pillow it definitely makes a difference!

I sleep on my side but with a low pillow. I think the high pillows are for side sleepers but I tried one and it was too high and I felt out of alignment. To compensate I use a thin folded blanket under my pillow which brings it up to the perfect height so that my neck/jaw feel fully supported.

3, but I get terrible heartburn, it really helps not to be flat (ideally you jack up the bed but dh would complain)

One. With a silk pillowcase.

I need a new one actually. I can tell coz I’m punching it more!

THose of you who sleep on your front. Can you sleep with your head on either side? I've only ever been able to sleep with the left side of my face downwards.

greenelephantscarf · 15/03/2019 19:10

when I sleeping on my front I always am sort of upright, leaning my head against the pillow. always the same side tbh.

shinyNewPound · 15/03/2019 20:13

@gamerchick and @peridito how did you train yourselves to sleep propped up? This is what I want to do as my face looks so crumpled when I wake (and taking far too long to spring back nowadays).

gamerchick · 15/03/2019 22:11

I've been using an old settee back cushion wrapped in a single quilt and piled up pillows either side of me, one wedged under my bum and one under my knees.

I wouldn't recommend it tbh if I'm honest. Its not comfortable for all night. Get yourself some decent face cream and a plump up serum instead.

Geekster1963 · 15/03/2019 22:17

I have two memory foam pillows but I sleep on just one or my neck aches. I sit the spare one upright when I sleep and put the other one flat.

gamerchick · 15/03/2019 22:21

But if you really want one, get an acid reflux wedge. I have high hopes Grin

Peopleshouldread · 15/03/2019 22:25

One firm one as a base, then a soft one, then a triangle pillow , then two super soft ones on either side of my head and shoulder.
Excessive, but I have a wonky joint condition that constantly caused bursitis in both hips, and calcific tendonitis in one shoulder.I also have AS which means I can't lie supine. I can't be flat on the bed( shoulder) and I can't lie on either side ( bursas on each hip plus one that sublexes in the night). So after many attempts I've designed a nest that eliminates most pressure points.
Dh often wakes up after dreaming he's been buried alive, when the odd pillow tries to smother him.
I want someone to make a bed made of air.

Dh often wakes up after dreaming he's been buried alive

Ah bless him, that did make me laugh though Grin

ASauvignonADay · 15/03/2019 22:27

Either 1 or 2 and I sleep on my side

cheesenpickles · 15/03/2019 22:39

As a child and teen it was 2 pillows minimum but three where possible. Now it's just one good memory foam pillow.

WheelyCote · 15/03/2019 22:43

3

OhTheRoses · 15/03/2019 22:56

As a person with a bad back, cervical damage a fractured l1 and bulging l4/5. A firm mattress and two old duck down pillows, both thin and malleable and a new duckie. The pillows graduate down and my neck rests on the newest.

llangennith · 15/03/2019 22:56

I sleep on my side. Don't mind which side. One pillow under my head, the other as a side pillow.

holly1501 · 15/03/2019 23:01

Four. One on top of the other aside each other at the headboard. I'm single though so I have all the pillows to myself and the headboard hasn't been banged for a while HmmSad

StarJumpsandaHalf · 15/03/2019 23:06

@PlatinumBrunette I'm always on the hunt for the perfect combination too.

As it stands we share six pillows on the bed when it's made. Two super king sized feather and down to cover the width of the bed. These get pushed up against the headboard when I go to sleep as I wriggle down the bed so they're not in the way, then two regular sized ones, a wool and a bamboo both from Homesense.

At heart I'm another two pillow person but sleep more comfortably on just one. I can't choose between those two for preference yet, I swap and change which one I lie my head on and then use them all to prop me up while I have my morning cuppa.

I get far too hot in the night and have a serious shoulder and neck problem. I sleep on my side and although a down pillow feels like a cloud, I think I need more support.

MaryBoBary · 15/03/2019 23:15

One but I have 4 extras that I use to prop up my various limbs as I don’t like them to touch each other.

@Dafspunk I don’t know why this made me laugh so much but the image of it really did Grin

Nat6999 · 15/03/2019 23:24

I sleep on 2 but have a memory foam one to prop myself up to read or watch TV plus a V pillow for when I'm in pain. I spend a lot of time in bed due to having ME/CFS & Fibromyalgia so I need to be comfortable.

PlatinumBrunette · 15/03/2019 23:40

It's never ending, isn't it @StarJumpsandaHalf
What are bamboo and wool ones like?

I am so going to have to find a shop to try them out - bit in the sticks here.

peridito · 16/03/2019 08:52

@anniehm and anyone else suffering from terrible heartburn - you need to do something to control this as left untreated it can damage your oesphageous and cause even worse problems .

You can buy ranatadine OTC ,lots of supermarkets sell it v cheaply .Or go to your GP .

Downhillrider · 16/03/2019 09:32

I go to sleep with 2 pillows and wake up with non Hmm

Dafspunk · 16/03/2019 09:39

@MaryBoBary I do only have 4 limbs Grin Reading that back, it sounds like I’m some sort of octopus.

brizzlemint · 16/03/2019 09:46

I have about 8 on the bed, I sleep on 2/3 pillows - two thin ones and one plump one.
