What's happened to Rachel Riley?

FedUpOfBrexit · 04/03/2019 12:30

What's going on with Rachel Riley?
She has done a complete character change and seems to be acting very bizarre attacking Jeremy Corbyn, Owen Jones over Twitter constantly and seems to get stranger by the day.

OP posts:
TheClaifeCrier · 04/03/2019 13:23

From what I understand, Jeremy Corbyn got egged.

Owen Jones was obviously indignant.

RR then re-tweeted an earlier Owen Jones tweet in which he apparently condoned egg throwing against Nick Griffin and called him a Nazi.

So basically RR has exposed hypocrisy of Owen Jones, along with calling out anti-Semitism etc and now Jones and the rest of the Corbyn cult are up in arms.

McTufty · 04/03/2019 13:23

I’m pleased she is using her profile to call out anti-senitism, which is rising to worrying levels. I can’t believe the abuse Luciana Burger is receiving. We should support RR not call her weird.

Supine · 04/03/2019 13:23

The girl on Countdown?

No. The woman on Countdown.

CocoDeMoll · 04/03/2019 13:28

She’s a massively intelligent and fearless woman standing up for her right not to be the target of abuse.

Should she go back to looking pretty and doing the odd sum?

StormTreader · 04/03/2019 13:29

The female Mathematics graduate on Countdown.

noblegiraffe · 04/03/2019 13:30

he says he’s looked it up and there’s nothing to the anti Semitism

Indeed it’s all a Jewish plot to overthrow Corbyn, says anti-semites. Latest is that Tom Watson is being funded by Israel to cause a split in the Labour Party.

I mean, when a Jewish MP quits the party citing appalling anti-semitism, that’s surely a time for some reflection. The guy who proposed the no-confidence vote in her (the chair of her constituency Labour Party) has been on a David Icke radio show spouting Jewish conspiracy theories, FFS.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/03/2019 13:31

So, a strong, confident and highly intelligent woman takes on Little OJ, hardly seems a fair fight Grin. Rachel shouldn’t be complacent though, he might get his mum on her Grin

reallybadidea · 04/03/2019 13:32

She's a woman. And a Jewish one at that. She should know her place and stop being so uppity Hmm

PinaColada1 · 04/03/2019 13:35

Yes, must get on Twitter!

I think that seems to be at the heart of some of the abuse and lack of understanding towards RR. That the anti semitism isn’t a clear list of actions and comments, it’s the comparative hypocrisy of clamping down on one prejudice, whilst ignoring anti semitism and down playing that.

Am I right?

DP is voicing what many think, that the anti Semitic accusations are just Corbyn bashing and have no substance. I tried to argue with him but he couldn’t see that omission of condoning was anti Semitic. And he even fancies RR so I thought he’d be on her side!

That is what worries me. The anti semitism is insidious, hidden, creeping. But very much there. Go RR I say.

PinaColada1 · 04/03/2019 13:38

@noble I know I bought up that argument, that the MP had gone. He’s been minimised by saying he’s flouncy and dramatic anyway.

I do worry, as I think it’s real, it’s there. But no one is actively being vocally anti Semitic and our quick glance public are not looking deeper. And condemning RR as a result.

SuperSara · 04/03/2019 13:40

It must be quite scary to be RR at the moment - there are some fanatical nutcases out there, as we all know.

She’s incredibly brave for doing what she’s doing and, quite frankly, I’m in awe of her for it.

She should be supported and applauded for her stand, not pointed at as bizarre and strange!

E20mom · 04/03/2019 13:40

Could you explain how what's she's been doing is bizarre?

To be your post is more bizarre than what she's been doing.

nettie434 · 04/03/2019 13:40

I think she has said that she never really thought much about being Jewish until she started getting so much vile abuse. It started when she began defending Tracy Ann Oberman I think. Then she started getting stuff directed at her. She is planning to prosecute someone so she is not taking this lying down. She used to support Labour, as did Nick Hewer who resigned his membership to show his support for Rachel. He was a big Labour donor in the past.

noblegiraffe · 04/03/2019 13:47

But no one is actively being vocally anti Semitic

It’s more that people don’t recognise it when they see it and think that people are kicking up a fuss over nothing. Momentum have just put out a video explaining what anti-semitism looks like because a lot of people might not realise that referencing the Rothschilds is an antisemitic trope, or claiming that Jews are actually controlling things behind the scenes is antisemitism.

PinaColada1 · 04/03/2019 13:52

@noble I agree I just feel worried - I think the silence of Corbyn on not tackling his issue is very damaging indeed. Maybe I need to be more articulate about why RR has a point in order to influence those like DP.

BorisBogtrotter · 04/03/2019 13:53

I agree that there have been some anti semtitic things in the Labour party.

I'm, at a wonder to know why the level of scrutiny isn't applied across the board though.

Remember when a big fuss was made about how an culturally Jewish Labour leader had difficulty eating a bacon sandwich? Remember when the dog whistle term "north London Geek" was applied to him?

Look at the people certain members of the Conservative party allied and the language of some of their press towards Soros and others, as well as their fondness for Trump who says similar things and calls people marching with flaming torches chanting "Jews will not replace us" very fine people.

All of it is abhorrent, but for some reason its only ever called out on one side.

BorisBogtrotter · 04/03/2019 13:54

"I think the silence of Corbyn on not tackling his issue is very damaging indeed."

Corbyn has repeatedly condemned antisemitism.

Daysofpearlyspencer · 04/03/2019 13:54

Owen Jones is an odious little man who constantly bullies women on Twitter, RR is a a total shero

downcasteyes · 04/03/2019 13:57

There is an anti-semitism problem in Labour.

The Tory party also has a long history of anti-semitism.
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitism_in_the_UK_Conservative_Party)

We also have a far right on the rise, who count anti-semitism amongst several flavours of racism and xenophobia that they peddle.

This is a huge, wide social problem and needs dealing with as such. It is not excusing Labour in any way to say that they need to take action, but so do many other organisations. The rise of the far right, in particular is really, really frightening.

noblegiraffe · 04/03/2019 13:59

but for some reason its only ever called out on one side.

I guess because people expect better of the anti-racist party?

DoulaDaisy · 04/03/2019 14:00

OP probably won't come back now because she hasn't gotten the reaction she was expecting... oh well.

saxatablesalt · 04/03/2019 14:00

She's brilliant.

And she's right op. Do you disagree with her?

saxatablesalt · 04/03/2019 14:02

The same names defending corbyn are here I see.

I used to be a Corbyn fan too. But had my eyes opened.

What an odd thread.

What happened is that she, as a Labour supporter, called out the leadership’s (lack of) response to antisemitism within the party. As a result she has been harassed and threatened by Corbyn supporters who see any criticism of him as a —Zionist— plot to challenge his leadership.
