Just a thank you from me Iamdanish for a fascinating thread!

Hej OP. Thanks for your very insightful post.
I have a question. I spent a weekend in Denmark recently, in Vesterbrø. Right by the meat packing area, there was what looked to be a safe area for heroin and other drug addicts to shoot up safely (for want of a better expression). Are you aware of this and what is the general opinion of the facility? While I understand the rationale behind it, I was a bit Hmm at the openness of it all, especially in such a touristy area.

Iamdanish · 01/03/2019 15:17

absolutely, have not heard about babysitting services. Would not trust strangers to be honest. Perhaps if mamadane returns she can answer your question. Otherwise call your hotel and ask.

Upthe newlevels is very correct, and very diplomatic. Grin
By the way, love you are trying in danish.

Yes we are still very casual dressers. When we have visitors from the US, we are "impressed" with the amount of make up.
On the other hand, had the pleasure of being in Rotherham on a friday night many years ago, it was full of very young girls in what appeared to be slips instead of dresses and wearing all the make up they could get their hands on Grin.

Hi!!!
My dad is danish! I spent many happy summers at my grandparents house on Samsø! Taking my little boy there this summer and I just can't wait. We might stop off in Copenhagen too for a trip to Tivoi!
Just wanted to share the love for DK and say Hi!!

Iamdanish · 01/03/2019 15:38

Vesterbro used to be the tough neighborhood in Cph. Still is to some extend, but in recent years it has become quite hipster.
I personally go there for the restaurants, but wouldnt recommend anyone staying at hotels there.
Yes i think we do have safe places for addicts, not sure they are allowed to shoot up there, but perhaps they shoot up and then go there?
I think the hipster areas tend to pop up in run down areas, which as you say pose a conflict of interest.

Sorry Absolutely I've never heard of babysitting while travelling, if I have to be honest, but there are sites where you can contact babysitters like minbabysitter.dk. But I would definitely do as Iamdanish suggest, contact the hotel as they might know more Grin

Tanaqui · 01/03/2019 17:03

(Waves) I am just over the water from Kronburg!

Anyone got any recommendations for Copenhagen after the tourist bit (little mermaid, nyhaven) and the main shopping bit?

soulrider · 01/03/2019 17:11

Denmark can be seen as a bit traditional in its ways. How are gay people treated in the rural towns and villages?

Denmark was the first country in the world to legalize same sex unions.

Iamdanish · 01/03/2019 17:20

Vor frelser church, has a spiral church tower I think you can climb.
Rosenborg castle, with the crown jewels
Canal tours, highly recommended
And if you are going to have dinner a medium priced restaurant called Gorilla 425 kr. For 10 servings.

But unfortunately we still also have bigots 🙁.

OP posts:
MamaDane · 01/03/2019 18:01

soulrider I know in rural areas some gay guys tend to have a harder time. As a teenager (10 years ago), one of my friends was regularly beaten for being a somewhat feminine gay while dressing punk, meanwhile another gay friend of mine is also rather feminine but dressed "normally" and never had any assaults. So I'm not sure if they were homophobes or just anti-punk. 🤔

But personally as a Danish lesbian I've never actually had problems coming out or living as a lesbian. The only issues I've had has been from non native Danes actually. My DP and I tend to not hold hands in certain areas and shops/restaurants.

Iamdanish · 01/03/2019 18:08

Iamdanish · 01/03/2019 18:12

mamadane that came out wrong, sorry. I just don't think it is necessary to highly that we were first with same sex partnerships when we do still have problems.
Sorry 😊

Iamdanish I got what you meant, no worries! And I agree

MamaDane · 01/03/2019 18:22

That said, it's much better to be gay in Denmark than the UK. My British DP agrees.

soulrider · 01/03/2019 18:33

Nobody would have picked that up from the OP's answer. It's not a utopia, but ahead of the UK in this regard I think

MamaDane · 01/03/2019 18:43

soulrider I thinks she's just trying to prevent people from getting unrealistic expectations of Denmark like it's a gay utopia, as it still has its problems.

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/03/2019 19:12

What do you do with people when they get old? We went to Copenhagen last year, as well as being dazzled by how many tall blond and thin people were about I hardly saw any old people. I live in a town people retire too and it was so odd!

Iamdanish · 01/03/2019 19:36

Disfordark
About 20% of the population is 65 or above. The reason you didn't see many elderlies might have been if you only visited the inner city.
Older people tend not to live in the most touristy areas. But in the suburbs there are plenty 😁.
