For me...

Finding out my newfound major celebrity crush is 35 years older than me... I thought he was only 40 odd. I'm extremely deflated.

And thinking I'd found a double youlked Haribo to win a holiday prize but I was pranked.

Lastly, my DS now saying Daddy and putting arms out to daddy. Until now, he's done my head in by constantly only ever wanting me. I feel quite upset now he's all for DH.

The Sistine Chapel. The first time I went, in 1989, I didn’t even realise we’d reached it and wondered why the slow queue of tourists seemed to have reached a log jam in this particular room. It was only on recognising the God and Adam finger thing that I realised I was there. I felt really embarrassed as every else seems to talk about it as an almost religious experience.

Oysters. I want to like them but every time I try they are just unpleasant, snotty, salty gobbets.

The Greatest Showman

Getting post every day. When I was little, I thought this must be the best thing ever and that my dad was just playing it cool with his seeming indifference.

Pishogue · 25/02/2019 14:16

No, the only appropriate response to the Sistine Chapel is to scream like a banshee because you are so moved by its beauty, and then post on Mn about how your stolid boyfriend was embarrassed because you frightened a load of tourists, and you can't help it because you're so sensitive art moves you unbearably to tears and shrieking. Toby Carvery. Someone we know raves about them. We never have Sunday roasts out because they're always such a let down but she was adamant that they were better than home cooked roasts so we thought we'd give it a try on her recommendation. Vile.

Nutella snack bars. So much promise but so underwhelming.

We had a takeaway on Saturday and it's usually lush but this time, it was distinctly ropey.

I've been on a diet for three hours and I've lost zero lbs.

Ooh, and the ending of 'You' by Caroline Kepnes. It's the book for the netflix series about the stalker. It's never going to win the Booker prize but it was easy to read during the commute to work without having to concentrate. I was hoping for something more.

Miller and Carter - bag of shite. I've cooked better steak than that from Asda.

Paris - kind of a mess.

Caviar - just... Salty.

fluffiphlox · 25/02/2019 14:49

I’m another one who thought Bombay Sapphire was going to be blue.

halfwitpicker · 25/02/2019 15:10

You'd have to be crazy to expect anything from Morecambe

halfwitpicker · 25/02/2019 15:12

Roast beef. Just so blah

Designer dresses and shoes Spent my teenage years thinking that if I could just afford one, it would be the life-changing adulting moment that Vogue et al said it would be. When I finally was able to afford one (and stupid enough to buy it), I was disappointed to find out that it was just another dress and did not, in fact, transform me into Gigi Hadid. Ditto: handbags, expensive skin creams.

Also, the post-Kraft Dairy Milk is very sad. But this is actually a serious matter and thus has no place on a thread like this.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 25/02/2019 15:22

Trevi fountain.
The Greatest Showman
Milan

But as someone else said upthread, I expected to hate the avengers films - loved almost the whole series and can't wait for the next film!

Coniferhedge · 25/02/2019 15:24

Phuket. Nice enough place and lovely people, but we went there for a week after spending two weeks touring round Australia. I was bored after a couple of days. Wish we’d stayed in Sydney for that final week. I can’t understand why Brits go all that way for a beach holiday when you can go to the Mediterranean for a fraction of the cost and travel time.

overtheirishsea · 25/02/2019 15:31

@n0ne Champagne - yeasty, not as nice as Cava or Prosecco etc

Yes! Totally agree. Give me cava or Prosecco any day

SummerIsNearer · 25/02/2019 20:47

All these posters who've visited Milan. Much more classy than myself Blush

I'm 'well travelled' in a sense that I've been to every good tanning country with a good all inclusive package.

Oh, and West Coast Ireland. I frequent for distant family the weddings cost me a fortune, and something called West Coast Cooler.
It is the best alcoholic beverage, ever.

Thought I'd add - Gin and tonic. Tastes of cat piss to me. Probably quite an unpopular view.

M&S chips. Someone said they were really nice but they're rubbish.

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour anything - just greasy.

Wine - I don't like any, really. I don't get drunk but it always gives me a headache.

Any type of pub type roast dinner. Just dry potatoes, such a shame.

Laura Ashley. I always dreamed of owning Laura Ashley items in my own home. Now I have some, I see it's shockingly poor quality! The children's bed sets are gorgeous though. Apparently Laura Ashley wallpaper is rubbish.

Rome: found it to be dirty, no where to have a nice drink and full of people harassing you. The same with Egypt (and I'm a massive Egyptian history need).

Marie Kondo.

Christmas can often be a let down. I have dreams of a wonderful, film like day. Usually ends up with crying kids and my BIL finally serving Christmas dinner at 7pm.

SurgeHopper · 25/02/2019 21:15

I absolutely refuse to engage with anything to do with Marie Kondo. Bit like 50 shades of grey or whatever

FemalePersonator · 25/02/2019 21:20

Expectation: I thought that having two - count 'em, two! - Master's degree would be the dog's bollocks.

Reality: Nothing. Nada. Not a sausage.

(Confession: this was years ago. I've long since learnt to live with the disappointment.)

HeronLanyon · 25/02/2019 21:48

Prosecco. So sweet and sickly!! A dry cava so much nicer. A bone dry champagne lovely too !!

Gunpowdertea · 25/02/2019 22:03

Millythepink - I hate when people do that! I'm 46 I fucking know what I do and don't like by now with the exception of foods I haven't tried as it's almost impossible to accurately describe to people who've never had them. I know I don't like crowded places, I know I don't like Paris, I know I don't like "abstract" or modern art, ditto modern ballet, poetry and Thomas hardy, I've never been a sporty person and I've always hated the cold (yes even though I'm a Scot!) and I've always been terrified of heights, feeling out of control, fairground rides and being dizzy (I throw up every time) so when people try and tell me to "try it again" I tell em to fuck off! Let me enjoy what I like and leave me alone!

I hope your "d"h has learned his lesson but I'd be tempted in your shoes to book a holiday that was his idea of hell!

Grinchly - I suspect we're a similar generation I have NEVER seen the appeal of blackadder, monty Python and similar just not my sense of humour at all.

"only to walk into the kitchen and see my lunch still sitting on the worktop, having been nowhere near the oven." I HATE when that happens - which reminds me - when I was at school we were promised robots would be doing all the housework and boring shit by now - wtf happened to THAT promise? Computer/techy people - you need to pull your fingers out!

"she was adamant that they were better than home cooked roasts" er...I wouldn't be eating at her house then!

Op I'm of Irish descent and yet have never been to Ireland and would love to visit if only to see the places my ancestors are from. When I was younger it was tricky due to the troubles and my being a forces dependent since I became no longer a dependent I can't afford it (Ireland's expensive!) so I envy you that even though I've been to Milan. I have family in Milan so I only had to cover flights and spending money.

I also can't stand gin (sacrilege on mn I know) smells and tastes of disinfectant to me I'd much rather have spiced rum or good vodka. Genetics mean I have to watch though, I never get drunk only ever a bit tipsy and I don't get hangovers - this is also true for my relatives who are alcoholics, my theory is there's no natural deterrant for us so I rarely drink and never more than 2-3 (sorry bit serious for the thread)

Another who's not a kondo fan, seems wasteful to me to throw out perfectly good things and I suspect a lot of people who've done it have simply replaced the stuff they got rid of.

SummerIsNearer · 25/02/2019 22:34

This is interesting. I have a condition (can't remember it's name) where I have an unusual desire to chew on/eat cleaning products... I find the smells delicious and 'clean'. I've been known to chew on tea towels washed with disinfectant. Very odd ball behaviour, I know I know.

But I don't like gin! But now you say it smells of disinfectant, I might give it another go Grin
