... I'm going to tell you about all the secret and amazing foods you just (most likely) ignore when you wander down the aisles....

Alibi Max
Location: world food, Polish section
What is it? A polish version of Lion, but bigger and nicer and cheaper. 50p normally. Currently 3 for £1 at Tesco.

Wedel - Jaffa cakes
Location: polish food
What are they? The only Jaffa cakes you will ever eat ever again. Also come in cherry flavour and raspberry.

Chilli and Lemon grills
Location: world foods, asian food section
What are they? Then is delicious potato snack you'll ever have. Lemony and spicy and delicious little crisps

quorn southern fried nuggets
Where? Freezers vegetarian section

What are they? A Good, spicy, cheap (especially as they're £1 a bag right now)
L alternative to chicken nuggets.

frozen garlic/ginger cubes
Where? Freezer, Asian section
What are they? About 30 cubes if crushed garlic, ginger (or both mixed together) around £1-£1.50. saves peeling and chopping fresh, and way cheaper than any 'lazy garlic'

Since we're tapping into a whole load of supermarket expertise, can I ask if anyone knows if/where I could buy frozen runner beans or frozen baby corn? I have only ever seen corn as part of various mixtures (the rest of which my kids won't eat) and never seem to come across runner beans, so any pointers would be gratefully received.

Mayflower curry sauce

Usually a quid in Iceland but can be found in B&M.Tastes just like Chinese chicken curry and a popular choice with slimming world members as low in syns

Klopptimist · 18/02/2019 01:39

Mayflower curry sauce Fantastic stuff, exactly like the real thing. Available in Heron and Jack Fultons too, if you have one nearby.

@DoJo Waitrose do frozen broad beans

WFTisgoingoninmyhead · 18/02/2019 06:31

Polish food is lovely and my town has polish supermarkets one of which is very big and you can get your whole weeks shop if needs be. We also have Asian supermarkets and both of these will stock foods Tesco hasn’t even heard of! Usually cheaper too, I feel lucky to have this available to me.

HankNPat · 18/02/2019 06:44

I should really pay a visit to the Polish grocery shop just round the corner from me, maybe I'll find some of those fruity jaffa cakes - amongst other delicious goodies?!

cliffdiver · 18/02/2019 07:09

I avoided clicking on this thread for days as I read it as 'Hidden germs at the supermarket' Grin

For me it's Sainsbury's Garam Masala hummus. Divine.

RedTulip86 · 18/02/2019 08:46

Most Polish stuff at Tesco has English label at tge back. Yes to sweets although I prefer Grzeski- hazelnut wafer coated in chocolate, Maciek- chocolate bar with Advocaat filling, kebab-gyros spice is fab for chicken.

If you find yourself near Polish shop they have full range sugar only(no bastard sweeteners) syrups.

RedTulip86 · 18/02/2019 08:51

WTching this thread with interest, mango pulp in Asian groceries is fantastic, Pride coconut milk has one of the highest coconut extract content( except Asda’s own).

Asda’s own Rogan Josh curry sauce is one of the best curry sauces I had and their pesto is better than branded. Also yy to their chopped tomatoes( but must try the Asian ones somebody has mentioned before)

AuntieOxident · 18/02/2019 11:34

Must have a look for the chocolate bar with advocaat filling, it sounds divine. (Maciek - is it a boy’s name? I think I know a Maciej but am not sure of the spelling)
DoJo I’m sure you can get frozen runner beans almost everywhere but I haven’t been able to find frozen baby corn on it’s own, only as part of a mixed packet.

Whoever on here suggested the Chilli and Lemon Grills ..... THANK YOU xxx

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/02/2019 19:54

Not a big fan of advocat, but in our Tesco they also had a toffee one of those choc bars in the same range- has anyone tried??!

AvaTheGardener · 19/02/2019 20:26

there's a big Eastern European community where I live, so the big Tesco has two World Foods aisle, one of which is nearly all Polish. The Wedel Marshmallows are absolutely addictive. I can't have them in the house.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 19/02/2019 20:52

The chilli and lemon grills and knocked Doritos sweet chilli out of the park as far as the DC are concerned Grin

@bellinisurge

You're welcome. Grin

HoptoitDufflepuds · 20/02/2019 04:37

I buy the breadcrumbs from the world food aisle at Tesco. They're cheaper, bigger pack and usually bogof compared to the tub in the gravy aisle.

EssentialHummus · 20/02/2019 06:48

binary there was a distinct lack of them in "my" Sainsbury's yesterday. I think Cofresh should be paying you Grin.

Jeackyll · 20/02/2019 07:01

My current loves are all from Aldi:

Frozen pineapple

A frozen mix of cous cous (I think) with veggies, seeds and pomegranate seeds that you stir fry

Cooked sliced chicken with a bit of stuffing on top - so nice in a sandwich with mayo

Jeackyll · 20/02/2019 07:02

Oh, and the Aldi lime fake Doritos. They are much nicer than the Dorito version and have seeds in them.

TiddlesUpATree · 20/02/2019 18:57

Popped to the supermarket at lunchtime. Wandered into the world foods aisle. Found alibi max coconut version. Mmmm. Awesome thanks for the recommendation.

00100001 · 20/02/2019 21:32

"Found alibi max coconut version"

kateandme · 20/02/2019 21:58

anyone have blueverries and raspberries.for having on cereal or oats porridge etc?
well get to aldi freezer section for their packaged ones.a third the price of fresh! you just have to get some in a little dish out every day and voila fresh and cheap.cosco also big packs which you can just decanter to and from the freezer as when you want some fresh

SingingSands · 20/02/2019 22:08

Taj frozen garlic, spinach and ginger have been my freezer staples for years. Less than £1 in Asda.

CoFresh snacks are fab - London Mix is my favourite and yes to the lemon and chilli curls!

DoJo · 21/02/2019 23:01

Thanks @AuntieOxident but those look like green/french beans rather than runners and apparently my children are weirdly particular about the type of beans they will eat (WHY did I tell them runner beans would make them run faster?!?!).

The baby corn thing is so frustrating - they clearly freeze well, considering they are always in steam bags etc, so why not sell them on their own?
