... I'm going to tell you about all the secret and amazing foods you just (most likely) ignore when you wander down the aisles....

Alibi Max
Location: world food, Polish section
What is it? A polish version of Lion, but bigger and nicer and cheaper. 50p normally. Currently 3 for £1 at Tesco.

Wedel - Jaffa cakes
Location: polish food
What are they? The only Jaffa cakes you will ever eat ever again. Also come in cherry flavour and raspberry.

Chilli and Lemon grills
Location: world foods, asian food section
What are they? Then is delicious potato snack you'll ever have. Lemony and spicy and delicious little crisps

quorn southern fried nuggets
Where? Freezers vegetarian section

What are they? A Good, spicy, cheap (especially as they're £1 a bag right now)
L alternative to chicken nuggets.

frozen garlic/ginger cubes
Where? Freezer, Asian section
What are they? About 30 cubes if crushed garlic, ginger (or both mixed together) around £1-£1.50. saves peeling and chopping fresh, and way cheaper than any 'lazy garlic'

These aren’t particularly cheap (I think they’re about £1.25) but so tasty - biscuit sticks with matcha-flavoured sugary coating. Can never resist when passing through the world food aisle in Sainsbury’s.

At the risk of taking the whole thread into the gutter! This is my favourite thing in the world foods section childish I know!

Cherryblossom I’m with you on the garlic on popcorn 🍿 I also like Chinese 5 spice

Much cheaper than crisps

When I saw this thread I came on to recommend the Taj frozen garlic. I got some about a year ago but none of the big supermarkets has stocked it since. I happened to find some in Morrisons and emptied the shelf bought loads.
The cofresh snacks are great, they used to do a chilli one which I was eating rather too much of but it disappeared.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/02/2019 13:37

Grin squeaky The question is have you tried them?

Therewere5inthebed · 17/02/2019 13:38

Thank you for your posts. I discovered the world food aisle in my local Sainsburys last week and came away with a huge bag of panko breadcrumbs for £2.50 and a bag of fine semolina, no idea what to do with the semolina other than sprinkling on my potatoes before roasting them.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 17/02/2019 14:04

make couscous with it!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/02/2019 14:10

Reading this thread with a cuppa and my 4th cherry jaffa cake.

boatyardblues · 17/02/2019 14:32

bag of fine semolina

The stodge in the cake ‘batter’ in my handed-down family Bakewell Tart recipe is 3/4 fine semolina to 1/4 ground almonds, rather than flour.

I feel so lucky to have an ethnic supermarket nearby. Fresh Greek bread, baclava, Indian teas, pastas, massive bags of herbs and spices for the same price as one of those tiny little jars.

I agree though the best thing is frozen garlic and ginger - so cheap and so much easier!

Lolly34h · 17/02/2019 15:26

Hit up Tesco and Sainsbury's today. Got 4 different types of ramen noodles to try. The cofresh chilli and lemon crisps and a jar of garlic purée. Also bought some rice noodles which I've never tried so gonna make a stir fry for supper tonight

YouBumder · 17/02/2019 15:28

This thread is great. Sadly the world food aisle in our local supermarkets is crap. I work near a big Chinese supermarket though which is great for lots of things.

namechange34 · 17/02/2019 15:41

For those that use Ocado I highly recommend Picard frozen goods - we get the ham and cheese crepes and the galettes. Potatoes sarladaise are good too. Waitrose/Ocado have great frozen potato rosti, a good alternative to oven chips.

AuntieOxident · 17/02/2019 15:48

Old fashioned semolina puddings, made with milk , vanilla, sugar, served with jam (like rice pudding)?
You can also add cream and an egg and bake it in the oven for a richer pud. Serve with poached fruit.

terryleather · 17/02/2019 16:18

You can make cakes with semolina as you would with polenta/cornmeal...think both Nigella and Ottolenghi have Lemon Semolina Cake recipes

buzzy1 · 17/02/2019 16:45

Tin of mango pulp in the World Food aisle - pour some over vanilla ice cream for an easy desert which tastes like a solero or use it to make mango milkshake or lassi

WelcomeToGreenvale · 17/02/2019 16:45

Look out for Krowka in the Polish section - amazing gooey-centred fudge, I'm addicted!

Someone said Shin Ramyun earlier and I agree, absolutely delicious - comes in cups and packets, the packets are vegetarian!

Anything by Flying Goose is great, most famous for their sriracha which I couldn't live without, but their red and green curry pastes are far cheaper than the Tesco branded ones and far stronger and more intense. I also picked up a huge bottle of Healthy Boy sweet chilli sauce from Thailand which is amazing and £1.50.

yips · 17/02/2019 17:00

I will definitely be getting the frozen ginger and garlic on my next shop, what a great tip! Thank you Smile

Elderflower14 · 17/02/2019 17:19

I used to buy Nilgiri teabags from Suma. I now can't find it anywhere... Also called Blue Mountain Tea....

Klopptimist · 17/02/2019 17:29

Honestly! Buying lemon and lime slices frozen in a PLASTIC bag

Hey, I'd give anything not to have to rely on pre-sliced and packaged stuff. But as things stand, they are a godsend to people like me with reduced fine motor skills. Unless, of course, you'd like to drop by and do some slicing/dicing for me?

Elderflower14 · 17/02/2019 19:17

I agree @Klopptimist. I have dyspraxia and get anxious cutting things up!

BrendasUmbrella · 17/02/2019 21:10

I love this kind of thread! Taking notes...

UnderCaffeinated · 17/02/2019 22:45

Indomie noodles, I like all the varieties but the 'mi Goring' ones are my favourite, they're about 30p a packet from Tesco, or you can get the soup ones from Sainsburys, all so so nice!

PrismGuile · 17/02/2019 23:21

Go Asia Chicken Gyoza - freezer section

Work perfectly as potstickers or in soups! Fab and only £2
