... I'm going to tell you about all the secret and amazing foods you just (most likely) ignore when you wander down the aisles....

Alibi Max
Location: world food, Polish section
What is it? A polish version of Lion, but bigger and nicer and cheaper. 50p normally. Currently 3 for £1 at Tesco.

Wedel - Jaffa cakes
Location: polish food
What are they? The only Jaffa cakes you will ever eat ever again. Also come in cherry flavour and raspberry.

Chilli and Lemon grills
Location: world foods, asian food section
What are they? Then is delicious potato snack you'll ever have. Lemony and spicy and delicious little crisps

quorn southern fried nuggets
Where? Freezers vegetarian section

What are they? A Good, spicy, cheap (especially as they're £1 a bag right now)
L alternative to chicken nuggets.

frozen garlic/ginger cubes
Where? Freezer, Asian section
What are they? About 30 cubes if crushed garlic, ginger (or both mixed together) around £1-£1.50. saves peeling and chopping fresh, and way cheaper than any 'lazy garlic'

00100001 thanks, that's nice of you to suggest something for me!

I think Iv tried them and they are nice, not quite as good as Lidl' version but they are a pleasant snack Grin

CommunistLegoBloc · 15/02/2019 21:09

I love those lemon crisps.

Just a head’s up that Maggi is Nestle, for those who boycott.

DoJo · 15/02/2019 21:19

Morrisons do delicious gyoza - £3 for a big bag and just as (if not more) delicious as the Itzu ones which seem to be everywhere at the moment.

Home bargains (and sometimes Lidl) do really good microwave in the bag curries from ~Indi Grand - we really like the punjabi choley and tadka dal.

@tshirtsuntan I bought some a few weeks ago from my local Tesco. I'd never seen it before but my ED told me about it and uses it. Or did, but it now has dairy in it Hmm

I love the world food aisles. Massive bags of rice, super cheap herbs and spices. I shall keep an eye out for the things suggested on here.

buckeejit · 15/02/2019 22:09

Lidl fresh pesto is the best but ours hasn't had it for 2 months, grrrrrr!

Mummylife2018 · 15/02/2019 22:17

I find the tube of garlic purée much better! £1 a tube and lasts months

MorningsEleven · 15/02/2019 22:40

I'm writing next week's shopping list. It's mainly Polish jaffa cakes and samosas.

rosablue · 15/02/2019 23:06

We love the tubes of garlic purée too - but get through at least 2 tubes a week and often more so never had to figure out how long it lasts 😂

Tesco do frozen bags of lemon and lime slices...

I slice them up or cube them and freeze them when I have half left over. The double up as ice cubes and lemon/lime wedges without diluting your G&T. Smile

Loving this thread thanks OP 😀

TheFillijonk · 15/02/2019 23:39

Polish (fridge) section in Tesco has 1 litre cartons of buttermilk for around £1. Not the most exciting thing ever but I was chuffed to discover it.

"I'm writing next week's shopping list. It's mainly Polish jaffa cakes and samosas"

@thenewaveragebear1983 I agree abount the Lancashire Greel yogurt, it is not in with the regular greek yogurts for come reason in my Asda. It is so thick that you can practically slice it, so tasty!

I also buy the tinned tomatoes and chickpeas, black eyed beans and kidney beans in chili sauce tins from the world food aisle for 4 for a £1.

sulflower · 16/02/2019 09:10

Watching this thread, lots of stuff I'm avoiding eating as we are going on holiday soon and thinking about my not so bikini bod Grin. Will be having a feast when we get back!

HankNPat · 16/02/2019 11:40

This is what I bought yesterday in the Polish section of Sainsburys, but the shelves were a bit depleted and they didn't have the cherry liquor chocolates Sad

Great thread. Always look at the world food section but never know what to try. I was going to recommend Bamba peanut snacks from the kosher section but someone has beaten me to it. They are soooo addictive if you like peanutty things and are low salt, not crammed with artificial stuff and great for weaning babies onwards too. I was reading that it’s a good idea to introduce peanut from about 6 months to reduce chances of allergy. Bamba melt in the mouth so are a good thing to start with I reckon. And as the pp Israel has one of the lowest peanut allergy rates in the world and they think the fact that Bamba are so popular there has contributed to this.

Will definitely be trying the Alibi bar and the yummy sounding Jaffa cakes.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/02/2019 12:24

I appreciate all recommendations. I am sometimes frightened of "orrin" foods, so like it if someone can explain what things are - thank you Binary

Jon65 · 16/02/2019 12:35

Honestly! Buying lemon and lime slices frozen in a PLASTIC bag. Please . . .. They come in their own litttle package called skin and last a long time in the fridge. Please can we cut down on the use of plastic.

sharksonmyswimsuit · 16/02/2019 12:40

Around Ramadan you tend to get offers on things like rice and spices- I got 5kg broken basmati rice for £3 a bag last year.

Going to Tesco this afternoon- will have to stock up on raspberry jaffa cakes. Mmmmmmmmm

WatcherOfTheNight · 16/02/2019 12:50

These are this weeks buys.
I haven't tried the Shan curry mix ,Ashkora or polish jar before but the others are regular buys .
The spinach is also a new buy but I'd read good reviews & it definitely looks a lot less stalky than others I've bought & very handy portion size.

Ds has issues with texture so hoping to add this spinach herbs to whatever sauce I can in place of chopped baby spinach

Great thread ,thanks Binary

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 16/02/2019 12:51

KTC garlic and ginger paste, £1 a jar, great for stirfrys. Gochujang, a Korean garlic/chilli sauce for making bokkeumbap. This is a Korean bubble and squeak: fry half a white cabbage with some miso, then once it's wilted chuck in cooked rice, leftover meat or bacon. Once it's browned, mix in the gochujang and top with a fried egg. Good hangover cure.

00100001 · 16/02/2019 13:12
