... I'm going to tell you about all the secret and amazing foods you just (most likely) ignore when you wander down the aisles....

Alibi Max
Location: world food, Polish section
What is it? A polish version of Lion, but bigger and nicer and cheaper. 50p normally. Currently 3 for £1 at Tesco.

Wedel - Jaffa cakes
Location: polish food
What are they? The only Jaffa cakes you will ever eat ever again. Also come in cherry flavour and raspberry.

Chilli and Lemon grills
Location: world foods, asian food section
What are they? Then is delicious potato snack you'll ever have. Lemony and spicy and delicious little crisps

quorn southern fried nuggets
Where? Freezers vegetarian section

What are they? A Good, spicy, cheap (especially as they're £1 a bag right now)
L alternative to chicken nuggets.

frozen garlic/ginger cubes
Where? Freezer, Asian section
What are they? About 30 cubes if crushed garlic, ginger (or both mixed together) around £1-£1.50. saves peeling and chopping fresh, and way cheaper than any 'lazy garlic'

Me too please @HankNPat !

HankNPat · 16/02/2019 14:05

I haven't tried them yet. The entire packet weighs next to nothing so I guess they're not heavy going at all (which will suit my current low appetite). I haven't Google translated the wording, but it looks as though they might be gluten free as well. Will let you know later or tomorrow Grin

WatcherOfTheNight · 16/02/2019 15:12

They look like jumbo versions of the dairylea dunker tubes I used to buy for my DN,cheese n chive flavour I think ...my crisp addiction meant I had to eat her left overs ...if those are similar I'll get fatter I've a soft cheese just waiting for something dunkable Grin

Love gochujang @DisgraceToTheYChromosome . I discovered it with a Nigella recipe to pep up turkey mince. Nice recipe.

AuntieOxident · 16/02/2019 16:19

I bought the packaged Dal Makhani yesterday in Tesco, it’s gorgeous. The dal Tadka is not bad either. someone posted a picture of the latter just above ^^ .
And my local Tesco has the Maggi powdered coconut milk that one PP was asking about upthread. It”s really handy as a store cupboard standby, lasts for ages.

00100001 · 16/02/2019 19:19

I got some polish ketchup today, as ours is about to run out. Hoping it's good!

Thank you for the heads up on the curry paste concentrate at Tesco thenewaveragebear1983. It really is the best. Usually I get it in our Chinese supermarket but it opens 9-5 so sometimes hard for me to get there. My gems are from B and M (not strictly a supermarket but it does sell lots of food!). Things like great garlic and chilli paste in tubes for about 39p; every kind of Reese's you could imagine; amazing little bags of stuffed green olives in brine (3 for £1); canned tomatoes really cheap (all standard sizes too - not smaller packs conning you into thinking you are getting a bargain),

Afonavon · 16/02/2019 20:50

I tried to buy the chilli and lemon grills in Asda, but was too late as they were sold out, the Mumsnet effect I reckon! I bought the chilli and lemon curls instead, but wasn’t a fan at all. I’ll stick to my SpicyTomato Mackies crisps from Lidl, yum!

00100001 · 16/02/2019 21:21

@Afonavon they're often quickly sold out. They're so farms delicious!

Hopefully this is the thread that will help me find my favourite item from the world food aisle that I can’t find anymore. Little bright red balls of kosher cherry sweets sold at Sainsbury’s. Think they might have been called sour cherries or something. I have been longing for them for about 15 years!

As a pp has said, breadcrumbs from Polish shops are brilliant and keep for AGES. My Viennese mother in law insisted that they were used for making schnitzels. Kabanos Polish sausage is also very good, as is the Polish mustard in a mini beer glass.

Whattheduck · 17/02/2019 09:07

My dd loves the Quorn nuggets so I do buy those but I am going to look for the jaffa cakes as I love anything cherry flavoured

HankNPat · 17/02/2019 09:19

Binary and WatcherOfTheNight, OK I'm just eating some of the long corn sticks now! They're rather good, have a nice corn taste, crunchy when you first bite into them and have a 'dissolve in the mouth' texture afterwards as the stick isn't dense at all. Translated a few of the words on the pack - they are gluten free and without preservatives.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/02/2019 09:26

Crikey! What curmudgeons up there ^^

Thanks for this binary I'll get looking.

I bloody hate shopping and this thread will make it easier.

MarchSurprise · 17/02/2019 09:31

Oh wow, I think I need to get all of this written down!

southnownorth · 17/02/2019 09:37

Brilliant thread OP thanks, I have added lots of these to my Tesco shop, they are going to think I have gone mad.

JeepRoadTrip · 17/02/2019 09:46

Our local shop sells Polish crisps - mushroom flavour. Absolutely lush! I buy several (huge) bags at a time!

CheddarAndCrackers · 17/02/2019 10:57

Mushroom flavour crisps? I like mushrooms but can't imagine that! Must keep my eyes peeled next time I'm in a supermarket.

We got these from Asda, Gouda and Mushroom croquettes (basically a pancake filled and breadcrumbed) was really lush.

B&M also has really nice garlic and herb salt in a grinder for 99p. I love it sprinkled on homemade popcorn. It's sooo moreish.

driggle · 17/02/2019 11:54

I often buy Lee Kum Kee soy and oyster sauces from the World Food Aisle. They come in 500ml bottles and work out much cheaper than the other brands. Tesco usually have that brand on offer too.

00100001 · 17/02/2019 11:56

@hanknpat - what flavour are they?

i see them in the european supermarkets, bu am never sure.... !

HankNPat · 17/02/2019 11:59

Just remembered some lovely Dutch (?) 'cheese crispies' snacks. Not necessarily world food aisles, but I've only found them in Waitrose in the section with cheese biscuits/crackers www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/roka-cheese-crispies/002381-784-785?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIt7KK2trC4AIV4ZPtCh2CFgbDEAYYASABEgJ4XvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds. They're gorgeous!

HankNPat · 17/02/2019 12:01

Well, they're just corn/maize flavour really, Binary. Quite a mild corn taste and with no added flavouring of any kind.

MontyPants · 17/02/2019 12:14

Binary yes that’s what the sweets look like! Just not the same brand. Why did I not google sour cherry sweets? At least I know some of the brands now so might have to browse amazon. Thank you!!
