... I'm going to tell you about all the secret and amazing foods you just (most likely) ignore when you wander down the aisles....

Alibi Max
Location: world food, Polish section
What is it? A polish version of Lion, but bigger and nicer and cheaper. 50p normally. Currently 3 for £1 at Tesco.

Wedel - Jaffa cakes
Location: polish food
What are they? The only Jaffa cakes you will ever eat ever again. Also come in cherry flavour and raspberry.

Chilli and Lemon grills
Location: world foods, asian food section
What are they? Then is delicious potato snack you'll ever have. Lemony and spicy and delicious little crisps

quorn southern fried nuggets
Where? Freezers vegetarian section

What are they? A Good, spicy, cheap (especially as they're £1 a bag right now)
L alternative to chicken nuggets.

frozen garlic/ginger cubes
Where? Freezer, Asian section
What are they? About 30 cubes if crushed garlic, ginger (or both mixed together) around £1-£1.50. saves peeling and chopping fresh, and way cheaper than any 'lazy garlic'

We bought a bag of 'crunchy mix' from Tesco (frozen) which was very corn heavy- we don't particularly like baby corn! It was sugar snap peas, baby corn and carrots. So they definitely can freeze them!

ononie · 25/02/2019 07:54

Is it the chilli and lemon curls or grills that I need?

ononie · 25/02/2019 07:55

Dojo they may not be the ones your offspring want but I think green beans are runner beans

Have just googled and now I'm not so sure about the beans

I think you might get runner beans in tins Grin

EssentialHummus · 25/02/2019 08:08

on likely the same flavour but different shapes. I prefer the grills personally (but if they sell the mango chutney poppadom curls, buy a bag of those too Grin).

I've only ever seen the grills.

But I'm heading into a n asian supermarket in the next week or so and will take one for Hidden Gems Team, and get lots of things to try

I'm just tucking into cofresh jalapeno grills- delicious! Another thing that tesco world food aisle sells is regal puff pastry biscuits, they look unassuming but are pretty addictive!

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/03/2019 13:20

We're having this tonight, I bought it ages ago from the Polish aisle, it's cabbage leaves stuffed with sausage in tomato sauce.

Thanks for all the tips, first trip to Tesco since reading this and have a little haul. I’m hoping for a pleasant surprise with the coconut jellies Smile

I've got a liking for the cans of pop in the world food isle. Grape Soda, Pineapple Soda, and they also have a Root Beer that's not bad. I do buy the odd item but will be taking a closer look.

I did find that my local Sainsbury had a noodle pot that was red on the packaginand contained spicy tom yum noodles (can't remember the brand name) and I've often had one in my drawer at work in case I forget my lunch. Was just 50p.

Mintylizzy9 · 03/03/2019 16:03

The lemon grills are bloody delicious and I ate the entire pack last night!

I’ve tried the lychee jelly this afternoon and it smells like laundry detergent and has a strong aftertaste of soap. The jelly bit is very firm and it has chunks of lychee in it which is sticky and sweet and almost makes up for the soap taste Grin. Seriously though can’t bring myself to try any others just yet as my mouth still thinks I’ve done a shot of fairy! Planning a trip to the big Asda in a more diverse part of town next week as half the shops is world food!!

Aww I bought the lemon and chilli grills and didn't like them :( Not as much flavour as other citrus/chilli crisps (walkers max hot for example) and I didn't like the shape. Oh well!

Love those coconut jellies!

From the Polish section I love 7days garlic bakes, they're like bagel chips and delicious.

MulticolourMophead · 03/03/2019 21:43

I'll see if the chilli and lemon grills are there in Sainsbo tomorrow. As there have been so many recommendations Grin

I've just been watching a number of Asian street food videos so I'm looking for a few recipes as they look like cheap, easy food with a twist. I'm sure a world food aisle may come in handy.

RubySlippers77 · 08/03/2019 10:02

The world food aisles in supermarkets near us are a bit rubbish, I need to look for the actual Polish/ Romanian shops I think! But our local Sainsburys does sell the advocaat chocolate bars - Panawek I think it's called - a bargain at 60p and helps console me after hideous shopping trips with toddler DC Grin

00100001 · 08/03/2019 12:31

i found a Polish Deli just a couple of miles away and about 3 minutes away from my usual supermarket....

it's AMAZING!!!!

Random man in Sainsbury's the other day introduced me to garlic and ginger paste in a jar. It is revolutionary. In my opinion, anyway!

Clarabellawilliamson · 08/03/2019 12:49

I was going to recommend the corn snacks (we call them tiger tails) that @hanknpat shared earlier but for weaning babies. 100% corn, melt in their mouths, sort of 'stick' to their hands so they don't drop them and a fraction of the price of Ellas kitchen ones. I always share this gem with other mums local to me, as we have great polish shops, but not one has ever tried them!

Clarabellawilliamson · 08/03/2019 12:52

Hence why we call them tiger tails!

hummus from the chilled kosher aisle

HankNPat · 08/03/2019 13:47

Clarabellawilliamson, I must admit that, although I quite liked the bland (but slightly 'corny') taste of them, it did strike me they're probably more suited for baby weaning or a wee snack for a young toddler Grin
