British IS girl "wants to return to Britain"

themoomoo · 14/02/2019 07:26

Said she has no regrets;
Says she's seen severed heads in bins but it didn't faze her.
Says living with IS lived up to her expectations.
Now she wants to come home to Britain as she's 9 months pregnant.

Sounds an ideal member of any sane society

IS is not the same organisation it was when she joined. They have virtually no territory left, their caliphate has fallen apart. I doubt they are sending her via a camp as a Trojan horse to bring in others - they aren’t organised enough for that kind of operation these days. Plus it would be pretty stupid not to even pretend regret and remorse if she’s lying to get back to the U.K.

That doesn’t mean she isn’t dangerous. I would bet she’s far from the only IS recruit who’s justified IS’s failure as “the underlying idea was great, but some people were corrupt and bad so it failed.” So the next organisation that pops up to follow it will have a big pool of potential recruits to pull from.

Worries me what should be done about the baby. If she returns to the UK and is allowed to keep the baby, and still holds her abhorrent views, her child will probably end up a fundamentalist. Even if the child is cared for by family members, someone, somewhere along the road, will tell him/her about their mother's history, possibly leading to some kind of 'hero worship' of the mother and her actions.

Cruel as it may seem, perhaps the baby should be adopted out of the family and well away from the mother's influence.

I also think she had romantic ideas of what it would be like to be a jihadi bride - perpetrated by those who groomed her obviously - but deprogramming her will be a long job...............

evaperonspoodle · 14/02/2019 10:22

Serious question, to what extent do you have to have abhorrent views in order to get your newborn removed?

scaryteacher · 14/02/2019 10:22

I thought we had revoked citizenship for some that went to join ISIL?

I don't think she should be allowed back and according to a DT article (I've copied it as it's behind a pay wall), the govt position is this:

'A teenager who ran away from London aged 15 to join Isil and married a jihadi will not be rescued, the Security Minister has said as he warned that "actions have consequences".

Shamima Begum, 19, was tracked down by The Times to a refugee camp in northern Syria where she is now the bride of an Islamic State fighter.

Ben Wallace, the security minister, said that the Government will not risk the lives of British staff by sending them into a refugee camp in Syria to "rescue terrorists in a failed states".

Mr Wallace said: "We just don't provide consular services in Syria - it is dangerous. I don't want to send British civil servants and officials out into a still active civil war in an effect parts of a failed state." He warned that Ms Begum faced prosecution if she comes home.

He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: "The message is to all the people out there if you have been out there against the advice of the foreign office to go and engage in support or activities of terrorism you should be prepared to be - if you come back - questioned, investigated and potentially prosecuted for committing terrorist offences."

While not commenting on her case specifically, Mr Wallace said that "anyone in that situation would have to make their way to a place where there is consular services if they were trying to get back to the United Kingdom".

Earlier Sir Mark Rowley, a former assistant Commissioner in the Metropolitan Police, said Ms Begum could be grilled to see if she were guilty of a range of possible "serious offences".

Sir Mark told Today Ms Begum risked prosecution under new legislation governing "travelling to an undesignated area" which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, or support "for a proscribed terrorist organisation like IS".'

She would either be a trojan horse or a recruiter, and frankly, the security services have enough to do without monitoring her 24/7 for the rest of her life. If she is as concerned for her baby as she says, then get to somewhere with a consulate, have the baby and give it up. She made choices, she has to live with the consequences.

InfiniteSheldon · 14/02/2019 10:23

Thus is about rights and responsibilities: she has a right no matter how bad her behaviour, as does her child to the protection of our government. Our government also has a responsibility to its citizens, all of us, to protect us from terrorism. She is a terrorist who supports terrorism, by choice not by force or brainwashing she had all the benefits of a British upbringing, all the access to information on ISIS before she chose to leave Britain and does not in any way want to be a British citizen except to use our NHS and benefits. Rights v responsibility.

ltk · 14/02/2019 10:24

She is British. Of course she should come back. She will be arrested, charged and tried in the UK, as she should be. Her child will be either raised by family members or a foster family will be arranged.

travellinglighter · 14/02/2019 10:24

Government has stated that they won’t make any effort to rescue her. If she makes her way back she’ll be charged, sent to trial, convicted and sent to prison. I suspect the child will be taken into care and most likely put up for adoption because she’s hardly a fit parent.

I have no real sympathy for her now but part of me does think about the stupid young girl who went on line and swallowed hook, line and sinker the idea of an Islamic paradise under isis. Probably groomed, definitely deluded and at 15 years old ran away to follow a dream that anyone with half a brain would realise was going to be a living nightmare.

Bluesmartiesarebest · 14/02/2019 10:25

I don’t think she should be allowed back here until she expresses some regret or remorse for her actions. I feel sorry for her child being born into that life.

CameliaCamelia · 14/02/2019 10:26

Look ahead a few years

She will be a bored single mum struggling by on benefits

A bit of bomb making on the side could bring in a bit extra. Or pass on those skills to others..

WinterfellWench · 14/02/2019 10:26

No, she can fuck right off. She would NOT get to come back if it were up to me. (And yeah I now it isn't before anyone says.)

mirialis · 14/02/2019 10:26

the British government cannot just dump British citizens onto another country

It didn't. She willingly went there to support a terrorist group

And if a foreign national without British citizenship willingly came to the UK to support a terrorist group, their government can just tell the UK "tough shit", we don't want them back so you've got to keep them now? Hmm

WinterfellWench · 14/02/2019 10:26

I KNOW it isn't - not NOW.

FFS get an edit button PLEASE mumsnet!

billysboy · 14/02/2019 10:27

Pity HMG couldnt send someone out to " help " her

SAS job maybe

WinterfellWench · 14/02/2019 10:28

@ltk She surrenderd the right to be classed as 'BRITISH' when she fucked off and joined ISIS.

I don't give a shit what happens to her. I just don't want the scumbag back in my country.

theworldistoosmall · 14/02/2019 10:29

Surely if she was brainwashed she would have gone straight to the person who did it.
Instead, she went to a home for single females and filled in an application to marry an English speaking terrorist.

They fled in 2017, he handed himself in. She could have done the same then, instead, she chose to stay on with the children - 1 year 9 months, and a 3-month-old.

If she was innocent in anything over there she would have answered the question instead of refusing to do so.

nomad5 · 14/02/2019 10:31

My thoughts are with the innocent party in this - her unborn child. If her family are willing to care for the baby then I think the right thing to do is to find a way for the baby to be rescued/brought back to safety.

As for the girl (now woman) herself - it depends on what is feasible from a security perspective.

Her British citizen child should not have to suffer for its mother's mistakes. It deserves care and protection.

Bobfossil2 · 14/02/2019 10:31

I just thought the interview was horrifyingly sad. She was just a kid when she went. She’s seen some really messed up stuff and feels like it’s normal/ok? She’s lost two babies and has another on the way. She’s only 19. What a mess.

mirialis · 14/02/2019 10:32

Surely if she was brainwashed she would have gone straight to the person who did it

at least part of her grooming was carried out by a woman.

ltk · 14/02/2019 10:34

She did not forfeit her citizenship. That's not a thing. (There's a process for that, but this isn't it.) If she manages to get herself to the UK, she can't be turned away. She will be arrested.

MarthasGinYard · 14/02/2019 10:34

Am I the only one who really does wonder why both her dc are dead?

wigglypiggly · 14/02/2019 10:36

Why cant she just go to a safe country and have her baby there, wouldn't it be a major risk to fly when she is due any day now. Does she have family here who could fly out to help her. Her husband is Dutch, what about his responsibility to take care of his wife.

PortiaCastis · 14/02/2019 10:36

Am I the only one who wonders how much of that interview was true.

CameliaCamelia · 14/02/2019 10:37

The child will also be a Dutch citizen. So it does not necessarily have to be brought here....

Why should this country have the responsibility of another unwanted kid in the 'system'

EssentialHummus · 14/02/2019 10:37

She should be given the option to give the newborn up to the British state. That’s it.

StealthPolarBear · 14/02/2019 10:38

But she's a brit. We're not at war with Syria. Why should they have to clear up our mess
