Did anyone else's mum give them a food nobody you speak to has heard of?

Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

"Definitely going to try toasted malt loaf!" Same! Not had malt loaf in ages never occurred to me to have it toasted.

nevernotstruggling · 13/02/2019 20:28

Sosmix burgers with loads of ketchup and tartex at my vegetarian boarding school. Also chips with the skin on.

PlayerRed · 13/02/2019 20:28

NorthEndGal

My mum would make hot chocolate custard, and chop in bananas and we'd eat it piping hot

My mum made similar with tinned pears, hot chocolate sauce and ice cream. I loved it.

My grandma used to make milk jelly, but also a clear jelly, so you had it in layers. Loved it. My dad used to make 'cheese soup' it must have been easy as he did it when he came home from the pub! Basically cheese melted in milk I think, and served with bread to dip (white sliced of course!)

JRMisOdious · 13/02/2019 20:29

Braised heart. People have heard of it of course but I’ve never met another (living!) souls who used to eat it She boiled up a pigs head once but decided when she lifted the lid that it was too much even for her. Times were hard, love my mum, did her absolute best on her own. But a pigs head 😳

MrsJay

Everytime I see "sopu meat" I think of this clip Grin

PlayerRed · 13/02/2019 20:32

Soup meat obvs Hmm

AdaColeman · 13/02/2019 20:35

Strawberries with top of the milk were a favourite summer treat from Mum.

I sometimes wonder what she'd make of all the exotic yoghurts and types of cream available now.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/02/2019 20:35

We grew up near the watercress beds in Hampshire. My grandma would drive to us for Sunday every fortnight, and stop off at the farm shop and buy a bunch of watercress. This was made into sandwiches, with brown bread and butter, for Sunday tea.

PlayerRed · 13/02/2019 20:38

My mum used to give us this hot banana flavoured dessert with crushed biscuits on the top. Can't find it anywhere and I used to love it.

Was it called Hot Pudding Crunch or Hot Crunch something like that?

mrsfeatherbottom · 13/02/2019 20:39

Love these threads.

When we were home sick from school, my mum would make us Orange Cinnamon Toast - toast with sliced oranges, sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and grilled. I still eat it as a treat.

We would have mince and potatoes every Saturday for tea (my parents still do) and mum would fry the onions first. Then, we would get a slice of (white) bread, spread with loads of butter and take a little of the onions out of the pan and into the bread. So delicious.

Lastly, had a great aunt who gave us After Eight sandwiches - I remember them being really nice - might try to recreate sometime although I fear I would be disappointed.

Cream of chicken soup with a chopped up banana in it.
Banked beans, tuna and chopped cucumber all mixed in together.
In fairness to my dm, I was a bit of a strange child so they could all have been my idea.

pollysproggle · 13/02/2019 20:40

My mum is Scottish and we grew up on salty porridge. It's cooked with water and salt until it's a thick stodgy lump then you make a well in the centre and pour over lots of cold milk- delicious!
I've never met anyone else that made porridge this way including my Scottish friends although I'm sure they exist. I still make it now but only for myself, kids and DH thinks it's disgusting.

PlayerRed · 13/02/2019 20:41

Also yes to the macaroni with milk and sugar. Was quite a common pudding from the 80s I thought? I loved it but then I love tapioca, semolina and rice pudding skin!

Ahh yessss the skin was the best bit!

Batsypatsy · 13/02/2019 20:41

Home made potato salad (basically leftover mashed potato mixed with finely chopped onions and salad cream). My dad's speciality.

As a special treat we had it in sandwiches with what we called plastic bread - basically medium sliced white bread, usually Warburtons. Luvely!

My mum also made me egg milk shakes - raw egg, sugar and milk mixed together. I loved it.

We also had yorkshire pudding with melted butter and sugar sprinkled over as a dessert.

curiositykilledthekat22 · 13/02/2019 20:44

I still have cabbage water now, but my grandad used to give it me. I used to have sugar sandwiches at my nans

Drogosnextwife · 13/02/2019 20:46

Also I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but creamola foam, god I loved that stuff!

Georgianfairy · 13/02/2019 20:48

My gran used to give us beef tea which was what was left in the pan after she'd cooked the steak filling for vol-au-vents. It even had its own dedicated tea cup which was perfectly child-sized.

My fil makes pickled cucumbers which are served with a roast beef dinner (only with beef though, never with other meats).

latenightcakes · 13/02/2019 20:51

Potatoes on toast, brilliant!

winsinbin · 13/02/2019 20:52

My granny couldn’t cook many things but everything she made from soda bread to apple strudel was totally delicious. The cooking gene obviously skipped a generation because my mum cannot cook at all (but can sew and knit anything) and I am a pretty good cook.

Gran used to make us a mousse thing like a milk jelly but i think it was a mix of evaporated milk, jelly and fresh strawberries. I have tried many times to recreate it but the secret died with her.

One of the saddest moments of my life was actually a while after my granny died. I was at her house in a very remote part of rural Ireland a few weeks after her funeral. We were coming to terms with her being gone and then we found a frozen apple strudel she had left in the back of the freezer. God knows how long it had been there but we defrosted it and baked it and it just tasted of her and how much we loved her and gave me so much regret for all the things I had never told her or asked her.

I am nearly 60 now. I hope I’ll be a granny one day and I can give my future grandchildren memories like my gran gave me. But I’ll never make pastry like she did.

Grammarist · 13/02/2019 21:05

We used to get egg-in-a-mug when we were feeling sick. Soft boiled egg mashed up in a mug with butter, pepper, torn up white bread and a bit of milk. Bloody lovely!

latenightcakes · 13/02/2019 21:05

We used to have ‘suety pud’ served with a roast, quite nice actually I think it was something my Great Grandma used to do when there wasn’t enough meat.

PrismGuile · 13/02/2019 21:08

@pollysproggle I make salted porridge! I wasn't raised with it and I'm not Scottish - I just decided to try it one day because of Goldilocks and the three bears and loved it 😂

Agree that no one else likes it

PrismGuile · 13/02/2019 21:09

@latenightcakes they sell those in chippies in Lancashire

missyB1 · 13/02/2019 21:11

My mum used to make me a big pile of Irish potato cakes - I want some now!

And tinned tomatoes on toast was a thing in our house.
