Did anyone else's mum give them a food nobody you speak to has heard of?

Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

Easterbuns my dad used to do the vinegared cucumber slices too, and tomatoes. in those days salad e=was all served in separate dishes in our house.

we also ate sosmix, bean feast, pear and apple and tartex.

myidentitymycrisis · 13/02/2019 20:01

Glad someone else had milk jelly too

rosamacrose · 13/02/2019 20:01

Tinned pilchards on toast (not the ones in tomato sauce) sprinkled with vinegar. So good!
For posh (not us, for dinner party guests)
Lamb cutlets, layered artistically, on the diagonal with some fried onions. Tin of baked beans on top. Casserole until delicious!
Getting the leftovers was delicious!
Also, melted cheese on an enamel plate and scooped up with bread. As a child in 1928 she got to dip her bread in the oil on her dad's plate. Was her best treat, she said.
Sugar and sour apple sandwiches.

Oh! The joy of this thread!

Haven't read the whole thread but did anyone else have Cheesy-hammy-eggy-topside?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/02/2019 20:04

Stale bread soaked in warm milk and a bit of sugar. Am guessing it was when there was no food or money left at the end of the week

rosamacrose · 13/02/2019 20:05

My identity cucumber and tomatoes in vinegar was a mother staple for a guest buffet!
Oh how I loved her! Grin

Ratatouille76 · 13/02/2019 20:05

A banana mashed up with milk and sugar! Was a regular pudding. I loved it. No way would my kids eat it.

WindsfromtheNE · 13/02/2019 20:07

Cornflour cakes. In between a biscuit, a scone and a cake. Lovely.

Raaaaaah · 13/02/2019 20:07

Banana mixed with dedicated coconut with a curry.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/02/2019 20:07

My mum made custard with Birds custard powder (like everyone else) but with evaporated milk instead of normal milk. It was lush.

oopslateagain · 13/02/2019 20:07

@winsinbin our mum made pease pudding too! Boiled bacon, cabbage, carrots and potatoes, all in the same pot, along with pease pudding in a tied-up cloth. The whole lot served on a plate with the water as gravy. I still do it today, and yes I've got my own dedicated pease pudding cloth Grin

Mum made terrible amazing dumplings for her casseroles - suet and plain flour with a bit of salt and water. No raising agent, they were pure lumps of gluey fatty stodge. Bloody lovely Grin

AdaColeman · 13/02/2019 20:08

Milk jelly was a rare treat when I was little, I was so disappointed when DS didn't like it!

Raaaaaah · 13/02/2019 20:09

Oh and beanfeast gave me terrible tummy ache

halfwitpicker · 13/02/2019 20:11

Apparently the cabbage water gave you a lovely skin?

halfwitpicker · 13/02/2019 20:11

My grandad spoke fondly of sugar butties

LadyPenelope68 · 13/02/2019 20:19

Herja
Also a sort of odd jam thing. It was sweet like jam, but looked like marmite. I want to say it was pear and either peach or apricot; that I would really like to find again, but I don't have a clue what it's called.

OMG I know exactly the stuff you mean I think! It was pear flavoured definitely and came in a plastic tub. We used to get it from the local health food shop.

DuggeesWoggle · 13/02/2019 20:21

Wow loving all the milk jelly love! I wasn't always that keen on it, probably because no one else had it so I thought it was weird.

Butterscotch is definitely a flavour from the past isn't it? Bet they do a salted caramel instant whip now!

LadyPenelope68 · 13/02/2019 20:21

Junket - nobody I know has ever heard of it. It was a bit like blancmange. Rather than a powder it was a little tablet thing you mixed with milk. My Mum used to buy it at the chemist and the tablets came in this little plastic tube, the sort you get soluble Vitamin c tablets in.

AnneOfCleavage · 13/02/2019 20:23

Ooh milk jelly, yes we had this too. I am going to make some for DD as she loves jelly so it's probable she'll like this too if not I'll scoff the lot

We also had a tuna pasta bake with crushed crisps on the top and that is how I make it now.

My DH would have "egg in a basket" which was fried bread with the middle cut out with a jam tart cutter and then when you turn the fried bread you add the egg in the middle and you cook it til the white solidifies but the yolk is runny then add the circle middle that you also fry to make the lid of the basket. It was comfort food when poorly but DD has it for breakfast sometimes.

DH also would get cut up apple with a little pot of sugar to dip it in when ill and DD also likes that Blush

Hanumantelpiece · 13/02/2019 20:24

@Herja @LadyPenelope68 it was 'Pear & Apple spread' - I used to love it. You can still get it. I posted a linky thing earlier. Smile

Squickety · 13/02/2019 20:24

Orange milkshake. Which was orange squash mixed with milk. We never liked it and used to ask for strawberry or chocolate but there was generally only orange on offer Envy < not envy

IJustLostTheGame · 13/02/2019 20:24

I have one for dd.
I churn my own butter and dd always drinks the buttermilk.

PlayerRed · 13/02/2019 20:26

and Ribena made with milk 🤢

Oh wow that sounds awful!

INeedNewShoes · 13/02/2019 20:26

LadyPenelope - I was served junket (made from scratch though) at my good friend's parents' house one dinner time. Now, I love a pudding but God that stuff was foul! Envy
