Did anyone else's mum give them a food nobody you speak to has heard of?

Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

If it was decided we were looking 'peeky' we were given a pick me up of beaten raw egg, milk with a drop of Indian brandy. Mum or gran stood ever you as you wretching drank it down.
I shudder at the thought.

Herja · 13/02/2019 13:27

Sosmix. It is an actual food, but no ther bugger seems to have had rhe mis fortune of being fed it. Also tartex, which I did, and do, still like. I struggle to find it though.

Also a sort of odd jam thing. It was sweet like jam, but looked like marmite. I want to say it was pear and either peach or apricot; that I would really like to find again, but I don't have a clue what it's called.

ApocalypseNowt · 13/02/2019 13:29

Tuna fish slop. It was bright orange.

Still have no idea wtf it was Confused

Tahitiitsamagicalplace this sounds a bit like banana pudding! Eg www.google.com/amp/s/www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/banana-pudding/amp/

Jello does a banana custard ('pudding') flavour in the US which sounds something like what you're describing: www.fruugo.co.uk/jello-banana-cream-cook-serve-pudding-and-pie-filling/p-22314723-49306154?language=en&ac=dooshop&gclid=Cj0KCQiAnY_jBRDdARIsAIEqpJ3o4G3F0zDfdINCn73wJNH2Wm75F6ajWFuIhqmxd3Ym4Muzpft0CM8aAoOeEALw_wcB

MorningsEleven · 13/02/2019 13:31

My nan once cooked macaroni with milk and sugar. It was worse than revolting.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 13/02/2019 13:31

Ah Herja, your mum went to the same shop as mine (the health food shop).

The marmite- jam was Poiret (pear spread, less sugar than jam). You can still buy Tartex and Sosmix in Holland & Barret. I bring the yeast Tartex to work, because nobody steals an ugly big tube of "Yeast Pate".

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/02/2019 13:31

Adore I think you win. That sounds truly horrendous

AutumnCrow · 13/02/2019 13:33

Rissoles. Does anywhere still sell them?

haverhill · 13/02/2019 13:35

My mum, who was a war baby (her cooking in the 70s and 80s definitely reflected a 'rationing' mindset), used to make us corned beef fritters, basically corned beef (which used to be cheap!) dipped in batter and fried. God, they were delicious.

I used to eat the Poiret stuff and Sosmix as a student in the 90s.

spugzbunny · 13/02/2019 13:35

@miltonroad oh god yeh, the milky Ribena. Makes me feel sick thinking about it now!

BlueMerchant · 13/02/2019 13:35

It was in a box and it was called 'Elby'. It was amazing. Bit like pasta but also like rice. No one I know has ever heard of it.

haverhill · 13/02/2019 13:36

Autumn, your rissoles have reminded me that we had Brain's Faggots regularly. Was any food less appetisingly named?

Crustaceans · 13/02/2019 13:36

My grampa used to make us supper of digestive biscuits spread thickly with salted butter. It’s delicious and reminds me of sitting on his kitchen counter as he explained yet again about how he tested his blood sugar levels (he was diabetic) while I ate buttered digestives.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 13/02/2019 13:37

BlueMerchant you can still buy Ebly in Sainsburys. It's a grain of some kind, I think.

MrsBertBibby · 13/02/2019 13:37

My mum would give us a concoction of tinned tuna or salmon with chopped hard boiled egg in a bechamel sauce with paprika. On toast. She called it kedgeree.

Imagine my surprise when I encountered kedgeree in real life!

halfwitpicker · 13/02/2019 13:38

I remember Indian brandy.

Surely it was just, er, brandy? Confused

That sounds rough, adore

BlueMerchant · 13/02/2019 13:38

Wow!!! Off to Sainsburys thanksx

Pyjamaface · 13/02/2019 13:38

My Mum is forrin American so everybody thought we ate really weird stuff when we were kids. Such exotic things as Macaroni Cheese, Corned Beef Hash and Creamy Corn. All totally normal things now but not so much 30+ years ago.

My favourite thing was Sloppy Joe's, even better with chips to get Texas Horseshoes. Still don't get many people that have had them round my way

halfwitpicker · 13/02/2019 13:39

I do remember making treacle toffee with my grandma and her saying 'it's good for you!'

Butter, sugar, treacle, sugar.

Yeah GrinHmm

Namechangedbecauseiwantto · 13/02/2019 13:39

My mum used to make this weird dish which was a layer of mash, a layer of ham, a layer of boiled eggs, with crunched up crisps sprinkled on top 😬.
Cabbage water - eewwww.

Imfinehowareyou · 13/02/2019 13:39

Yes to sosmix and tartex. Both from the health food shop when we all became vegetarian in the early 90s.

Also yes to the macaroni with milk and sugar. Was quite a common pudding from the 80s I thought? I loved it but then I love tapioca, semolina and rice pudding skin!

We had 'magic mash' as kids which was smash mixed with ketchup to make it pink.
My mum had a phase of putting brown sugar and raisins on our salad.

MyOtherProfile · 13/02/2019 13:40

Cabbage water! Yes!

GahWhatever · 13/02/2019 13:41

Birds banana crunch pudding 80s

sosmix still available

When having a home freezer was very exciting and you had to go to a special shop to by frozen food, we used to have baby onions in white sauce that came in a bag and you just warmed though in a pan, stirring to make the sauce smooth. I'm sure I didn't imagine these but no-one else remembers them.

Also Chinese Gooseberries. DF had lived in NZ for a while and had a tree in his childhood garden. We had cases of them shipped across the world to him by his friends. Then when I was a teenager they rebranded them Kiwi fruit and started commercially importing them into the UK. Until then I'd had no idea they were so special!

Gluetap · 13/02/2019 13:42

Tahitiitsamagicalplace was it Birds Hot Crunch Pudding? I think that came in banana flavour.

derxa · 13/02/2019 13:42

Raw egg whipped up with sugar and then mixed with lemonade for breakfast!
