Did anyone else's mum give them a food nobody you speak to has heard of?

Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius where do you live? Will be there shortly Smile

Gingerkittykat · 27/02/2019 16:54

Skirlie, which is basically coarse pinhead oatmeal cooked with onions in lard. Mainly used as a stuffling for the Christmas turkey but also occasionally at normal meal times. I've never been able to properly recreate it.

I've seen Haslet for sale in Tesco and Asda recently, I hated it as a kid but quite like it now.

Haslet comes in a loaf which they slice thinly if you ask for thick slices you can grill it, we used to love that as children.

@Pieceofpurplesky - yay! I’ll put the kettle on.

Thing is, some of these bits of meat are actually pretty good. I bought some pork cheeks a few years ago, and they turned to be pretty lean bits of meat, which cooked nicely. They generally now get mixed into the meat used for brawn, but on their own, fab.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/02/2019 12:39

You're right, @MulticolourMophead - ox cheeks are gorgeous too - I do them slow braised with bacon, onions and carrots - they just fall apart.

MulticolourMophead · 28/02/2019 13:00

Not tried ox cheeks, just pork. Will have to try an dx get some.

Sliced white bread covered in hot gravy, usually after a roast, using up leftover gravy.

Sounds revolting now.

Bloodybridget · 28/02/2019 15:48

OkMaybeNot we used to have that, bread and gravy, I loved it! Can't imagine eating it now but probably if I did I'd still like it - I do sometimes mop my plate with a slice of bread.

@Gingerkittykat you have to be NE Scotland!! Love skirlie. Miss it so much down here x

BubblegumFactory · 28/02/2019 22:42

DM (welsh) used to make ‘tatus pimp minid’ ( please excuse spelling if wrong) - slices of potato layered with sliced onions and loads of bacon and peas in a sauté pan simmered with water until all soft and just slightly starting to mush up. Still hanker after it. Tried to make it myself but never quite got it the way DM made it.
She also used to make odd concoctions when we were running short. I do remember a particularly inedible effort involving weetabix and minced beef. She herself admitted it was vile.

An ex BF mum (who knew she was a dire cook) used to crush up cheese and onion crisps and put on top a chicken and roast it! Bloody weird taste 😂😂

Gingerkittykat · 01/03/2019 07:48

@babyno5 Nope, I'm in the central belt although my grandma was from North of Aberdeen so probably where the recipe came from.

They occasionally have tubs of oatmeal stuffing mix in the supermarkets around Christmas time which I am guessing is going to be similar but I have never tried it.

Nixee2231 · 01/03/2019 08:01

My grandmother smother chicken breast in 2 huge bags of Ruffles crisps and buckets of cream and put it in the oven. It was the most delicious and probably the unhealthiest thing I've ever eaten.

After I became vegetarian she started making it without the chicken, basically just roasted Ruffles in cream dripping with grease. I keep telling her not to make it but she is old and forgets so everytime I eat it I feel like I have to diet for 2 weeks afterwards.

babyno5 · 01/03/2019 19:03

@Gingerkittykat I even struggle to find pinhead oatmeal anywhere. Have to order it online!
Our local butcher back home in the NE used to make beef olives. Thin minute steak wrapped around skirlie. Delicious cooked in the oven and served with creamy mash, cabbage and gravy! Oh god I miss it lol x
