Did anyone else's mum give them a food nobody you speak to has heard of?

Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

Mind you when Im missing her, opening a jar of Vicks is the first thing I do to comfort me. I did actually try to taste it once for curiosity sake, a tiny blob hit my tongue and I threw up, not for me at all.

But she also liked cinnamon which Im not keen on, she used to eat cinnamon sticks as a treat she liked. Each to their own

@smurfy2015 I remember the orange baby aspirin too. In my head they were the same thing as Haliborange (can you still get that?) - something orange flavoured that cured all ills.
I was born in the 50s, and we used to get fed all sorts of weird tonics and supplements. I suppose it was a hangover from the war when the average diet may have been lacking sufficient vitamins and minerals.

I'd think they are haliborange as well. I think you can still get those, I'm sure I've seen them in Waitrose.

Yes I remember having that in primary school in the 1950s. We tended to have more visits from school nurses for that sort of thing...also the nit nurse came regularly!
One of my earlier memories is of being offered a tomato from a neighbour's greenhouse, and my mother's mortification when I innocently asked "Has it been washed?" She told the neighbour how worried I was about catching polio, which was a bit rich when the washed fruit paranoia was entirely down to her! It was obviously during a time when epidemics still occurred. Thank God for the NHS.
Incidentally, and not food but related to medicines, my Mum had a tracheostomy scar from having Diphtheria as a child. She would have died if the local doctor hadn't put her in his car and rushed her to hospital. I have always thought of that when taking my children for their jabs.

Junior aspirin was not the same as haliborange- it may have tasted similar but haliborange was (is?) a vitamin supplement and the orange junior aspirin was a lower dose aspirin for under 12's. Obviously discontinued when the side affects were found .

It was called Angiers Junior Aspirin, god I can taste it now. Was given it in 50s and 60s.

We used to have ‘suety pud’ served with a roast, quite nice actually I think it was something my Great Grandma used to do when there wasn’t enough meat.

This was how Yorkshire pudding developed as well. A carby side to eat with or ahead of a roast to make the meat go further, in the same way that suet dumplings are cooked with a casserole/stew.

There were different regional variations in years gone by, it's just that Yorkshire puddings is the one people now remember. I did come across a muffin-like recipe some years ago, but can't find it now.

Loved haslet that's been mentioned already, nobody else I know really had it.
You can still get it at the local butchers here. (UK)
Never heard of cobble but sounds delish, have googled and saved a recipe to try!

DM used to make leek pudding (made with suet) which we had with mince, mash and veggies.

I remember loving the taste of Junior Aspirin

So many of these ring balls for me.....the Nanaimo bars, cheese and honey sandwiches (forgotten these, must have one now) and I remember opening the fridge and coming face to face with a whole tongue....i couldn't get over the size of it.

One thing my mum used to make at the end of the month when there was no money left, tinned tuna in a white sauce with parsley and frozen peas, served over either mash or toast......yum yum yum.

My grandparents would drink their mug of cabbage water with the yorkshire pudding as a kind of starter, then the rest of the roast meal.

Minced beef on toast with a huge whole cooked onion.

Brawn (basically all the bits of a pig that you wouldn't want to eat in jelly, sliced). She bought it at Woolworth's meat counter, anyone else remember that? (Showing my age!!)

Blancmange with tinned fruit salad and a topping of evaporated milk.

I remember Junior Aspirin too. For some reason, we still had it in the medicine cupboard when dsis and I were in our teens (so, old enough for adult doses of aspirin) which did lead to a bit of confusion. I remember asking mum if I could take some aspirin, and being told I could have one - and taking just one junior aspirin as that was all I had ever been given - and for some reason, that had no effect whatsoever on my headache!!

I must be rather dim, because I didn't realise my mistake until I was grown up.

@Pieceofpurplesky - it would be wrong to make christmas cake mix just to eat it raw, wouldn't it? Wrong but so right! Grin
