Did anyone else's mum give them a food nobody you speak to has heard of?

Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

I also think the vinegar cucumber/onion/tomato thing is fairly common as my extended family all make it to go with a roast

StellaMorris · 13/02/2019 21:13

Jenny made with evaporated milk, and whisked up before it set.

Quite possibly the reason I can’t stomach milky stuff now.

StellaMorris · 13/02/2019 21:13

Jelly, not Jenny!

"Ladies fingers" aka an okra stew

pollysproggle · 13/02/2019 21:15

Ooo my granny did a side dish that I've never seen repeated. It was mixed tinned veg (the sweet corn, pea and carrots type) cold, mixed with salad cream. Was ok

Ikabod · 13/02/2019 21:17

@herja we were fed sosmix too.

And that goopy marmite-looking stuff was apple and pear spread - I loved that!

anothernamereally · 13/02/2019 21:18

I remember lots of things on toast:
Tomatoes
Sardines
Pilchards

Apple sandwiches
Banana sandwiches

Sunshine bread: butter both sides of bread and cut a round in the middle, crack an egg in and cook in the oven
Bread was cheap!

NameyMcNameChange1 · 13/02/2019 21:19

We used to have evaporated milk jelly - it was amazing.

At Christmas or any other times my parents had grown up friends round for drinks us kids were all given a brandy glass with just a shot of grenadine in. I remember feeling so sophisticated drinking it. My sister and I thought it was actual alcohol and tried to get pissed on it aged 9-10ish. We drank an entire bottle and got hysterical, I’m surprised we didn’t fall into a diabetic coma.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 13/02/2019 21:19

Cheese on plate.
Literally cover half a dinner plate with sliced cheese and stick it under the grill. Was usually accompanied by bacon and beans. Plate was mad hot from being under the grill!

Also chips and soup. Bowl of vegetable soup with chips drowning in it.

blueskiespls · 13/02/2019 21:19

Bovril and Hot Water

Dripping and marmite on toast
And....

Curried Bananas (served with salad) Bananas sliced, mixed with salad cream and curry powder.

onlyhereforthefood · 13/02/2019 21:19

Fairy bread- my friends were astounded!

StellaMorris · 13/02/2019 21:19

My dad used to slice up a raw potato and sprinkle it with vinegar, salt, pepper and sugar. Sad

PippilottaLongstocking · 13/02/2019 21:22

@herja you can get all those things in my local health food shop! The spread is sunwheel pear and apricot (or you can get pear and apple too) it’s basically super concentrated fruit juice

Ikabod · 13/02/2019 21:22

@BlueMerchant I think you can get Elby at Waitrose.

newyeardelurker · 13/02/2019 21:24

Rum butter on bread from my grandma in the northwest. Rum, butter and brown sugar. Kept the kids quiet!

onlyhereforthefood · 13/02/2019 21:24

At family buffets us kids always got given cream crackers with dinky little tubes of Primula cheese whilst adults had real cheese.

I miss those little tubes.

We used to have ‘suety pud’ served with a roast, quite nice actually I think it was something my Great Grandma used to do when there wasn’t enough meat.

Made to go with lamb. My mum used to make it I do now and again.

My Mum made this so I did for my children. They loved it.

stella namey
We were Fed evaporated milk jelly as well but it was called ‘strawberry mousse’ and was served in glasses to make it special!

StellaMorris · 13/02/2019 21:32

My GM used to get this chocolate spread. It was the consistency of golden syrup and really dark brown. It came in a round, white, plastic tubs. Plain chocolate, not choc/nut.

WarpedGalaxy · 13/02/2019 21:43

Bread and dripping! I just flashed back 40 years, we used to go to my gran's after school to wait for my mum to finish work and she'd always give us a snack. On Mondays it was my favourite - bread slathered with dripping from the Sunday roast, my mouth's watering just thinking about it!

winsinbin · 13/02/2019 21:54

poolysproggle the diced mixed veg mixed with salad cream was called Russian Salad. `Heinz used to do it in a little tin.mif you were super posh you could have it as a starter in a restaurant. There were some near us (in Streatham) that were a step up from a Wimpy Bar and you could tell that because they offered a three course meal - the first course being a glass of orange juice or a nice Russian salad. It was the forerunner of coleslaw.

If IRC we also used to have it as a side dish with school dinners occasionally.
