If you wake up early to do exercise, are you a morning person?

Because that's my excuse at the moment. You're obviously morning people. I just don't seem to be able to get up unless I have to! I booked a class yesterday morning which meant I had to be up by 7.45 but couldn't do it! I actually woke up at 3am and cancelled the class. I never usually wake in the night but my body obviously subconsciously knew I needed to cancel the class!
I fit in exercise at other times but it would be such an efficient way to get it done! It's just sheer willpower isn't it?!

I generally am a morning person but I don't understand people who say exercise in the morning sets them up for the day. If I do a hard class or a run first thing, I just want to sleep all day. I'm better off using the "quality time" in the morning to get things done and exercising later when I've run out of steam to do anything useful.

So there's your excuse Grin

losenotloose · 03/02/2019 13:56

I agree Best! The odd occasion I've forced myself up to do parkrun I've just felt knackered for the day. It just seems so productive to have done your exercise for the day by 10am. Maybe your body adjusts?

I’ve spent years and years trying to do exercise in the morning and never succeeded! I hate getting up in the morning anyway, so getting up to do something I hate was never going to work.

I’ve finally accepted it and just exercise in the evening, which is way better than the ‘morning’ I.e. no exercise I was doing previously.

Sorry that’s not helpful...

sofato5miles · 03/02/2019 14:01

I was never a morning person until I hit my 40s. Now i get up every day between 5.30 and 6 and get outside. It is my favourite time of the day.

My 30 year old self would be aghast

losenotloose · 03/02/2019 14:05

That's the problem, I hate getting up in the morning so it seems like a punishment to get up early on my days off. Maybe I'll just have to wait til I hit my forties...

I often exercise in the morning because otherwise I‘ll put it off and put it off until I‘m just too tired. I am not a morning person, however. Just a matter of forcing myself. I hate mornings.

SlightAggrandising · 03/02/2019 14:05

I do and I a definitely not a morning person. Just get into autopilot and do it.

losenotloose · 03/02/2019 14:23

Do you exercise on an empty stomach?

I've never considered myself to be a morning person, but 6 months ago I started getting up at 5.50am and going to the gym between about 6.15 and 7.15am, on weekdays. It gets it out of the way, I can enjoy the rest of the day without thinking when I can go (fitting in with DP, DC and work), and now it's a habit that I don't even think about. I don't go on Saturday because of work at 11am along with a late work finish on Friday, and Sunday I go about 12pm. Sat and Sun feel like beautiful luxurious lie-in days.

I'm 45. And honestly, I'm lazy really, this is the first time in my life I've done anything like this. Before, I would drag myself up at 7 to get the children up and ready for school. I do feel energised for doing it and my tolerance of kid shenanigans in the morning and on the way to school is massively improved for it.

I have coffee before I go but no food.

HappyEverIftar · 03/02/2019 14:50

What Kalinka said.

Yes, exercise on an empty stomach. When done, plate of eggs and veg.

confusedandemployed · 03/02/2019 14:51

I'm definitely a morning person and I much prefer to exercise first thing. However I WFH so it's not particularly early - I tend to do 7.30-8.30 in the gym, or a class at 9am on days when I start at 10. I'm always out walking DDog before 7am though.

Eloisedublin123 · 03/02/2019 14:55

This is interesting to read! Makes sense really!

CallMeSirShotsFired · 03/02/2019 15:01

God no! My alarm goes off a good 4hrs before I'd naturally wake up, so I figure I may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb, time wise.

But it gets it done and dusted, before my brain has a chance to realise what's going on! And if it's an outside day, it's so blissfully lovely and quiet, it really is gorgeous (more summertime than now)

Also means I can't talk myself out of it later in the day.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 03/02/2019 15:01

I assumed you meant getting up early to exercise before work, so 5.30 - 6.00 am, which I never manage to do, but 9am is not really early.

Stpancras · 03/02/2019 15:03

I've recently started getting up at 5am to exercise, it's improved my life in so many ways! I get more work done, I'm happier, I've toned up...not to say it isn't a battle. Every. Single. Day.

quirkychick · 03/02/2019 15:11

I am a morning person now, not sure if I always was. I use the early morning, 6am ish, as a quiet time before everyone gets up. I have a coffee and do some yoga, which can be gentle or more strenuous, depending how I feel. It also gets it done before I get dd2 ready for school. The school run also counts as exercise, so I'm ahead of myself as the day goes on.

Eloisedublin123 · 03/02/2019 15:21

I really like the idea of doing yoga

LittleMachine · 03/02/2019 15:37

I’m a morning person. I have no problem getting up in the morning, and I like to get to work early to do my jobs (teacher) rather than do them after school.
However, I’ve tried exercising in the morning and my body just won’t co-operate! I’ve recently started exercising after work before I pick the kids up from after school club, and that seems to be my best time, physically.

quirkychick · 03/02/2019 15:44

Eloisedublin I started doing Yoga with Adriene 30 days. There's thread in yoga. So, it's usually via YouTube 20mins or so.

SalrycLuxx · 03/02/2019 15:54

I get up but am definitely NOT a morning person.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 03/02/2019 16:29

Nope definitely not a morning person but try once a week to get an early gym session in just to get it out of the way so in the evening when I get in from work it’s just pj’s on and hibernate

NoWordForFluffy · 03/02/2019 16:31

I'm a morning person and get up at 5.15 to exercise 4 days a week (the days I work, condensing 5 into 4). I do exercise on an empty stomach; having breakfast after my shower.

I can't exercise after work. Too knackered from the day at work / long-ish commute.

Eloisedublin123 · 03/02/2019 18:00

Thanks quirky chick!

I love early exercise
The key is not to think
Alarm at 6
Out of bed, toilet, kitchen to empty dish washer whilst coffee brewing, drink coffee whilst on mumsnet, toilet, get in to running kit, open front door at 6.30, and out I go.
Back by 7.30 latest.
Done.

So quiet and peaceful. I often run with a friend and we will chat or just run quietly next to one another
