If you wake up early to do exercise, are you a morning person?

Because that's my excuse at the moment. You're obviously morning people. I just don't seem to be able to get up unless I have to! I booked a class yesterday morning which meant I had to be up by 7.45 but couldn't do it! I actually woke up at 3am and cancelled the class. I never usually wake in the night but my body obviously subconsciously knew I needed to cancel the class!
I fit in exercise at other times but it would be such an efficient way to get it done! It's just sheer willpower isn't it?!

And on mornings when I don’t run, still set alarm for 6.
And just enjoy the peace at home. Also catch up on admin, sort out school bags etc. It’s lovely

I used to go to the gym near work so by going early I was cutting about 20-30 minutes off my commute by getting up and leaving the house at 6.15. That was the only way I could motivate myself. I used to eat breakfast before I went but as I had a half hour journey it’d gone down by the time I exercised.
To my surprise though I actually enjoyed exercising after work a lot more; I’d eat a snack and it was a nice de-stress after work and I used to go home feeling quite energetic and good

Chapterandverse · 05/02/2019 20:09

I'm not a morning person but I get up at 5.15 five days a week for a gym class at 5.45. The 6th day I get up at 6am to run.

I hate mornings but I know I will think of a million excuses not to exercise later in the day.

lljkk · 05/02/2019 20:10

I have to pay in advance. If I paid then I jolly well am hauling my arse out of bed whatever the time. It helps to still be asleep when I get in the pool. I like being only one in office for 1hr+ before others arrive, too, and it means I see kids a bit b4 bedtime if I go in early I leave early. So off to work early, too. I'm not much of a breakfast person so empty stomach for a few hrs, yes.

I'm a total owl. Can manage for days on just 4-5 hrs / night sleep. 9am PTA mtg tomorrow or I wouldn't get out of bed until 10, I reckon.

lljkk · 05/02/2019 20:11

ps: pool is only open for lanes before 8am & after 8pm. (I work far away in the daylight hours). So either I go in early morning or I don't go at all.

speakout · 05/02/2019 20:45

I am a morning exerciser, and a morning person.

I find exercise invigarates me in the morning, it fleaves me pumped full of adrenalin and ready for the day.
I can't exercise in the evening- too tired.

TakemebacktoClifton · 05/02/2019 20:47

I am a night owl and horrendous in the mornings but it’s nice to get it out of the way in the mornings. Failing that I wasn’t like exercise straight after work.

SophoclesTheFox · 05/02/2019 20:52

I’m a morning exerciser, and natural lark. Up at 5.20, quick espresso and a glass of water, on my bike and in the gym warming up by 6.00. All done by 7.00, quick shower and breakfast, on the train and I’m at my desk by 8.30.

Feel great for the rest of the day, and don’t have to spend all afternoon debatin internally if I can or can’ t be arsed to hit the gym after work 😀

Bigsighall · 05/02/2019 20:57

Nope but I’ve got horses so it’s enforced exercise! Hate mornings but it does weirdly make you feel better once you’ve exercised early

XingMing · 05/02/2019 21:07

Morning exercise is the best because it's done so you can get on with the rest of the day.

halfwitpicker · 05/02/2019 21:34

Why do you want to exercise anyway?

PlumCakeChica · 05/02/2019 21:43

I’m definitely a morning person but I’ve never managed to exercise until lunchtime. I like to potter about in the early morning drinking tea and listening to the radio but I’m now considering some yoga early on might be something to try.

HildegardCrowe · 05/02/2019 22:01

I would struggle to exercise regularly if I didn't have a dog. I walk him every morning before work and feel so much better for it.

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/02/2019 22:16

I am totally NOT a morning person but I exercise in the morning 4-5 times/week. Doing it in the morning is the only way I can guarantee it will definitely happen as often my day can go pear-shaped quite easily (unexpected meetings, work crises, transport issues, etc). In most of my jobs I've needed to be at my desk by 8am. 9am at the very latest. So the early starts are necessary.

Discipline and consistency are key. I never miss a session unless I'm really, really ill - and even then I will drag myself to the gym 99% of the time. I always have a large glass of water, an espresso and a square of 95% dark chocolate before I leave for the gym. And I put a Nuun tablet in my water. I've trained in a totally fasted state in the past but I find I get better results with espresso and chocolate. After training, I almost always eat eggs in some form or other. There's a risk of a mid-afternoon slump after an early start so I tend to grab a green tea then to perk myself up a little.

I hold my hand up to being a total bitch when it's early in the morning. I have nothing positive to say whatsoever and it's best that any numpties in the gym keep away from me or they'll get short shrift. I seem to wake up properly halfway through my training session and then I'm a little more human. Friends say I'm not THAT grumpy early on.....but then they train with me at lunchtime and realise that the difference in my mood is like night and day. Smile But needs must....so mornings it is.

madeyemoodysmum · 05/02/2019 22:22

Yes. Hate evening exercise. Get up and go is my exercise time

MinecraftHolmes · 05/02/2019 22:28

I am very much not a morning person. I have to force myself out of bed by having my alarm too far to reach from bed. I exercise on an empty stomach, then eggs and coffee for breakfast once I’ve showered.

Tiggles · 05/02/2019 22:29

I am absolutely not a morning person. However I tend to force myself to get up at 6:30 to either go for a run or row on rowing machine. I do that every weekday morning and then allow myself a lie in on my day off on Saturday.

ImogenTubbs · 05/02/2019 22:55

This is a very inspiring thread! I'm just tying to talk myself into starting a morning exercise routine again. I would only need to get up at about 6.45, maybe even 7 (work from home, DD school ten minutes walk) which sounds breezy compared to the monumental effort some of you seem to make every day. Amazing!

sushisuperstar · 05/02/2019 23:00

I have to do it in the morning or there's no other time - I hate how noisy and busy the gyms are through. I am in one of these budget gyms that have lots of other folk who like me need to get it out of the way early. If I was loaded I'd have a home gym..it's not the exercise per se it's the noise (worse if a spin class is on argh!)

chillandrelax · 05/02/2019 23:10

Would love to do this. What time do you go to bed if you are up before 7am to exercise? The odd time I have managed it, I have felt great. At the moment exercise is in my mind all day and then I have guilt that I haven't done any, as I'm too knackered by the end of the day.

kateandme · 06/02/2019 03:53

it is proven in many studies that some people are night ols and some people ar moring people.dont shame yourself for this. its how we have night shifts on hospital ward and policing through the night.night people are good people too!
but I wreckon I might sometimes feel daunted by exercise right in the evening too. I think you've got to be ready for exercise and itl come at whatever time you plan it to be.

Cantbelieveit101 · 06/02/2019 03:56

Yes I am, but I am in Australia, so the sun is up at 4.45am so it makes it easier.

I exercise on an empty stomach, will have a glass of water before I go.

I only have the mornings to exercise, after work I have after school activities and usual family stuff. Its my only time for me!

FrannySalinger · 06/02/2019 05:13

Definitely both a morning person and a morning exercise person - right now I'm slightly procrastinating before going for a run! I am useless at exercising at night; I'm usually ready for sleep by 10 so evenings feel quite short anyway once the bath and bedtime routine is done.

Also I find that if I start the day with a run or some flow yoga I make better choices through the day - I eat more healthily and I feel as though I've set my head up right if that makes sense?

HerondaleDucks · 06/02/2019 05:19

I get up at 5am to go to the gym for an hour before work because it fits better with the family routine. I'm needed in the PM so I just made myself do it and then it became habit. It really does set me up for the day, I always feel great and go 4 to 5 times a week

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 06/02/2019 05:24

I get up early to exercise, but sometimes Instagram and Mumsnet gang up and pin me into the bed under the feather duvet so that I can't possibly go for a run - it's dreadful !!! Wink
