And why

I would want Jacob Rees Mog , best person at the moment imo

If May suddenly resigned there wouldn’t be a general election, unless the DUP pulled the plug. It’s safe to assume that wouldn’t happen, so there would be a leadership election in the Tory party, the winner of which would become PM.

If it had to be a Tory, Nicky Morgan, Amber Rudd or Justine Greening would be the least-bad option. My guess is that only one of those three would stand as the candidate of the pro-European ‘one-nation’ wing of the party.

titchy · 27/01/2019 17:16

Anna Soubry as chief whip would be fun...Grin

TheNumberfaker · 27/01/2019 17:16

Yvette or Keir if we could change party.
If it had to be a Tory, then Grieve, Allen or Clarke

NicolaStart · 27/01/2019 17:19

Yeah Jsmith99, RTFT, everyone knows that. People just answered the very open question in the OP.

moredoll · 27/01/2019 17:20

Jacob Rees-Mogg is an unredeemable arsehole who would wreak havoc on the disadvantaged and poor.

Yep.

LurkyMcLurky · 27/01/2019 17:22

If it absolutely had to be a Tory, then Amber Rudd. She seems reasonably sensible. Otherwise, Keir Starmer, Yvette Cooper or David Lammy.

Not going to happen anytime soon though as May is as inflexible as a brick and will dig herself in for as long as she possibly can.

titchy · 27/01/2019 17:23

Firstly showed he understood how uni worked

Given he spent three years as universities minister I bloody well hope he had learnt how universities worked Hmm

Ta1kinPeace · 27/01/2019 19:04

Kenneth Clarke is an old school patrician Tory
I'd trust him with this country far more than any other Tory at the moment.
He and Hezza "get" why Brexit happened
and have the intellectual capacity to do something about it
while at the same time cancelling Brexit

chilledteacher · 27/01/2019 19:14

Yvette Cooper for me

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 27/01/2019 19:39

Maybe Clarke or Gymiah.

It’d be a Tory, her standing down wouldn’t trigger an election.

bluebellation · 27/01/2019 19:52

Ken Clarke if Tory, Keir Starmer if Labour.
What a shame it's not going to happen .

DappledThings · 27/01/2019 20:07

@bellinisurge you have literally made me cry laughing.

PatPhoenix · 27/01/2019 20:17

God I forgot Philip Hammond. I'm not convinced he could do it but he could hardly do worse. He does at least seem practically minded.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 20:18

Larry The Downing Street Cat

Nah, Palmerston the Foreign Office Cat has more charisma.

crikeycrumbsblimey · 28/01/2019 06:58

@titchy

I can assure you that doesn’t go with the job sadly! The ignorance about the importance of research on HE is utterly unbelievable. As the lack of knowledge on what is going to happen post brexit to UK research in general - we are ruining one of our best assets.

Lweji · 28/01/2019 07:39

so there would be a leadership election in the Tory party, the winner of which would become PM.

If the Queen invited that person to form government.
If State of Emergency is being considered, it's not outlandish to think that Parliament could back a neutral(ish) figure that the Queen would appoint.
