Hey y’all, my sister-in-law is having a baby so I’m gonna be an auntie!! And we’re trying to think of names and we both kind of like the name Beca (not short for Rebecca, just Beca) and of you like it could you give us some middle names!! Thanks❤️❤️

*Meant to say Becca would be more ‘yoonique’ than Beca

KurriKurri · 19/01/2019 12:09

102 posts so far - do you really want your DN to have to have a 102 response long convo everytime she tells anyone her name ?

Pick another less confusing name (Tumbla ? Sipi- Kup ?)

Hotterthanahotthing · 19/01/2019 12:14

You don't choose a child's name for fun, this child will grow into a person who may wish you gave her a choice not gone straight for a short version.

The vowel sounds are the same for me in cah and car and I'm also a Rhotic speaker.

Hotterthanahotthing · 19/01/2019 12:21

Beca-Mae,even better.Confused

ClaireAnne1976 · 19/01/2019 12:29

Beca-Mae?! Oh yeah nice one. Turn a ridiculous “fun” name into something even more chavvy 🙄

DontCallMeCharlotte · 19/01/2019 12:29

Exactly. In my accent 'car' sounds like 'kerr' as in Judith with a rolled r but if you missed out the 'r' it would be 'eh' not 'ah'. So the English conflation of 'a' and 'er' makes no sense to a rhotic speaker because the vowel sounds are completely different never mind the presence of an 'r'.

(Bit confused about the relevance of Judith in there?!)

I have a family member called Summer which is very sweet. She's from Liverpool so locally it's sounds like "Zoomeh".

EnormousDormouse · 19/01/2019 12:42

Beca Cake

seven201 · 19/01/2019 12:51

Becca (not beca!) Ivy
Becca Sophie
Becca Sylvie
Becca Evelyn

I hate stupid spellings for names, my name's Nicola and that's how it should be. There's a woman I know who spells it Nykola...just why? Beca is ridiculous and wouldn't be pronounced the same way. Why not just Becca if you must shorten Rebecca?

3out · 19/01/2019 14:55

@ChristinaMarlowe haha! Let’s both just go for a nap. (I think I’d be willing to exchange a toe or little-used finger for a decent sleep!)

3out · 19/01/2019 15:00

@EspressoButler, no, couldn’t ban soy - it’s my favourite part of sushi 😂

@Foonababoonalagoona, yeah. I’m not sure I could keep a ‘wrong’ name. I think I’d have to try to get my birth certificate changed to correct it. :/

Starlight90 · 19/01/2019 15:04

Beca is the Welsh version.

Hairyfairy01 · 19/01/2019 15:10

Loads of Beca’s in my area. You do know it’s a welsh name?

pfwow · 19/01/2019 15:17

Really? I mean I know it's Welsh but so's Angharad, Beca's similarly harsh and unpleasant IMO, so perhaps a softer name. How about Carys (assuming you're Welsh)

amusedbush · 19/01/2019 15:23

Yes, since it was pointed out several pages ago...

TheVanguardSix · 19/01/2019 15:31

Oh please spell it Becca, at the very least if you're not going to go with Rebecca.

Becca Rae
Becca Rose
Becca Grace
Becca Eliza

www.beca-bin.com

You'll have seen these around? If you're going to name a child after a brand of bins, Brabantia sounds much nicer.

Schmoobarb · 19/01/2019 15:35

Beca is silly. Becca would be better.

Also why on Earth are you having a say in it?

BertrandRussell · 19/01/2019 15:37

There were 23 babies called Beca in 203- and that was the year with the most. So the “loads” people are talking about must have it as a shortening.

Riversguidebook · 19/01/2019 15:38

It sounds like a corporate business brand.

I make personalised name signs for a living ; I’ve seen some odd names in my time Smile and Beca isn’t too bad, but doesn’t make me think it’s a nickname for Rebecca at all.

maddiemookins16mum · 19/01/2019 15:38

It’s not a name.

Roomba · 19/01/2019 15:39

My friend's name is Becky. Not Rebecca, just Becky. She has spent her entire life correcting people when they refer to her as Rebecca and it drove her mad at secondary school when every single teacher did it.

I imagine Beca would be the same tbh.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 19/01/2019 15:39

Apparently it's a welsh name so if you're happy with the name then call her that.

However you'll have a problem with spelling it for people and people will spell it incorrectly, also to look at it the pronunciation isn't immediately clear. I had to look at it to realise what it said.

PenguinPandas · 19/01/2019 15:46

I would shorten Mae too so you have Beca-Me or maybe Beca-Use 😎

I would definitely use Rebecca instead of Beca but if need to use Beca then a middle name maybe Ellen she can swap it for if she doesn't like the name.
