Hey y’all, my sister-in-law is having a baby so I’m gonna be an auntie!! And we’re trying to think of names and we both kind of like the name Beca (not short for Rebecca, just Beca) and of you like it could you give us some middle names!! Thanks❤️❤️

OP posts:

@3out I’m Scottish and can’t understand how Beca would sound like beaker. If I read Beca I would guess it was said Be-cah**

But Be-Cah is Beaker?! Be as in be... Cah as in car. In English phonetics surely you mean Beh-ka?! Nevermind.

It's two c's. It's not clever or yooneek to miss or mix up letters, it changes pronunciation - that's what the letters are for!

3out · 19/01/2019 09:49

Rhotic or not, I think the point Count was trying to make was that not everyone turns ‘a’ into ‘er’, which is what the OP couldn’t understand (when they asked where everyone was getting ‘beaker’ from).

Because cah doesn’t sound like car in most (all?) Scottish accents. The A sounds are different in cah and car (plus, we’d pronounce the R, but I get what you’re trying to convey)

If only there was a baby names board on here ..... oh wait there is! Talking about baby names of children you will never meet is the same as listening to someone else dream

3out · 19/01/2019 09:55

I like your username 😂

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 19/01/2019 10:02

It's a shit name. And why spell it wrongly? Anyone with a basic education can see it's pronounced beaker. Makes you look thick.

Jumppinghay · 19/01/2019 10:06

Well it’s not a name for starters Confused

It's a Welsh name. I know loads!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 19/01/2019 10:12

Becca - with two Cs - is fine.

Middle names:
Anne
Blue
Jane
Louise
Rose

To me one syllable names with a 'softer' sound go best as a middle name after Becca.

Peppersteak · 19/01/2019 10:22

Spell it Becker?

Jess74 · 19/01/2019 10:30

Marie

ChristinaMarlowe · 19/01/2019 10:44

@3out Oh the 'r' in Beaker- sorry I was misunderstanding, I'm looking at Beca like what r Confused Yes I see what you mean.
OP isn't Scottish though? Or have I missed that, too? Severe baby brain this morning! Think I'd be better off shutting the f up and going back to bed!

CIT80 · 19/01/2019 10:47

Know quite a few people called Beca it’s a Welsh name

Sparklingbrook · 19/01/2019 10:48

I would wonder if it was pronounced 'beaker' due to the spelling. Or might think it was supposed to be Becca.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 19/01/2019 10:56

Tons of Becca’s Here in Wales
Know a few myself and several in school with my kids

That's grand. But I'm not sure what point you're making given the OP wants to call the child Beca...

*CrazyCrunk

Or even Rih as first name, Becca as middle name?

Delatron · 19/01/2019 11:11

I don’t know why you asked for opinions, everyone says it’s rubbish then you push on and ask for a middle name that goes with it!

Foonababoonalagoona · 19/01/2019 11:14

Siobhan is pronounced' Shuvon ' the I is before the O , I thought that was what 3out was pointing out?

wornoutboots · 19/01/2019 11:17

I know a couple of people called Beca (I'm Welsh).

So all these comments about 'yoonique ' and"why can't you spell it properly? " are being rather anglocentric.

ifiwasabutterfly · 19/01/2019 11:19

I am still giggling an hour later at Beca Squeaker Grin

Tinty · 19/01/2019 11:19

idk it’s kinda fun. And I’m just helping her brainstorm idea I’m not picking them out for her. But does anybody have a middle name for Beca (yes pronounced Becca)

What is kinda fun about Beca pronounced Becca, so obviously everyone is just going to think it is short for Rebecca.

Is the Fun in the Yoonique spelling which has been pointed out is actually quite common in Wales?

Why don't you just call her Lyd, short for Lydia?
Or George short for Georgina?
Or An short for Ann?

MyNewBearTotoro · 19/01/2019 11:20

In Wales Beca is a common name and one consonant is fine; in Wales you don’t need a double consonant - Eg: The Welsh spelling of Harry is Hari, Kerry is Ceri. If you’re in Wales the spelling Beca is fine.

If you’re in England then I would spell it Becca as otherwise the pronounciation could be ambiguous.

MyNewBearTotoro · 19/01/2019 11:25

Also, I know lots of babies with nicknames used as full names: Harry, Charlie, Alfie, Freddie, Ben, Max, Archie, Penny, Millie, Beth, Lottie, Ellie etc. Lots of these children have no full name on the birth certificate - I don’t think Becca is any different.

CountFosco · 19/01/2019 11:31

The A sounds are different in cah and car

Exactly. In my accent 'car' sounds like 'kerr' as in Judith with a rolled r but if you missed out the 'r' it would be 'eh' not 'ah'. So the English conflation of 'a' and 'er' makes no sense to a rhotic speaker because the vowel sounds are completely different never mind the presence of an 'r'.

I don't see a difference between the pronounciation of the names Beca and Becca but that's because I recognise them both as a NN for Rebecca/Rebeca. Rebeca being the Spanish spelling, just to make clear to people who think it's a misspelling Hmm.

MyNewBearTotoro · 19/01/2019 11:33

Interestingly Becca would be a more ‘yoonique’ spelling than Becca:

Approximately 5-10 babies born a year named Becca vs 15-20 babies called Beca so I would say Beca is the more established name of the two spellings.
